Why can’t parents look at the term dates for DC schools

Schools here, broke up yesterday. Today on the way to shopping, I saw about 4 sets of kids and parents with children wearing school uniforms. I have friends who have DC attend these schools (2 schools) and there are no day trips or classes today.

My friends knew the term dates as on parents pages and WhatsApp groups

What a horrible judgmental thread! Mind your own business and if the parent has made a mistake they’ve maybe got a good reason

Both schools have no clubs going on as its now the holidays.

That means nothing. They stopped my kids school clubs two weeks ago and children are still going to school in the school.

BunnyLake · 11/07/2025 13:56

I’ve sent my kids to school not realising it’s closed. It happens.

you sound very horrible and judgmental OP

Really? What is the op makes her sound horrible? 😂 slight overreaction.

My friend who has two DC - just finished years 2 and 4, at the school. Only got school clubs going on in August as the teachers will be on holiday and most families here go on holiday now, as slightly cheaper than later in the month when rest of England and Wales are off.

Edit - Each school has a different uniform. One wears dark red polo shirts.

Edited

where are you where the schools have closed so early?

Ponderingwindow · 11/07/2025 14:07

The last day of the year doesn’t go unmarked. If nothing else, the deluge of artwork and papers coming home tells parents it is the last day.

any other explanation for seeing children in their uniforms is more logical than parents not realizing the year had ended.

Whatsitreallylike · 11/07/2025 14:12

To be fair, school uniform can be very expensive. I imagine they’re just trying to get their moneys worth!

Venalopolos · 11/07/2025 14:17

It seems even weirder to me that, upon finding school is closed, instead of taking your children home to change you take them straight out on an unplanned excursion in their school uniform. And not just one family - four different families made this strange mistake and had the same absurd reaction.

Are you sure there hasn’t been a half day inset day or something?

Crunchymum · 11/07/2025 14:21

I'm calling BS.

Schools here start putting the last day of term on the newsletter as soon as we go back after half term. Nearer the time it's on every correspondence and we get messages on the penultimate day and last day, lest anyone not get the memo (messsages are via email and on the school message app).

It would be incredibly difficult to get the last day of term wrong so what are the chances the OP managed to see four families, from two different schools and verify this information with friends who happen to have children in said schools?

Nah I'm not buying it!!

tempacct · 11/07/2025 14:32

I don't know, but at least on your deathbed you can look back and be proud of your unfailing attention to the school calendar. Bravo from me

Cakeandcardio · 11/07/2025 14:35

NuffSaidSam · 11/07/2025 09:42

I'm sure they can look up term dates, but they're probably also affected by human fallibility.

Have you ever made a small admin error OP? Or are you one of the lucky ones who is immune from ever having made a mistake?

Like an erroneous comma perhaps?

Roomwithaview2019 · 11/07/2025 14:40

You keep up with your friends, kids school dates? you might want to think about getting a hobby or getting netflix! 🤦‍♀️

When my DS was in High School (we talking about 17ish years ago before Whatsapp groups etc) I didn't get the letter about there being a 'mufti' day. presume the letter was in the bottom of his bag mixed up with his PE stuff etc.

Anyway, I dropped him off at school in uniform, he noticed everyone was in mufti & started to say that he couldn't be the only one at school in uniform & talking about how he couldn't go to school.

I made him go.

It was a lesson to him & he managed to pass school letters etc onto me after this.

Oldglasses · 11/07/2025 14:55

I have no idea how you wouldn't know it was the last day of the school year - there's such a big 'deal' about it in school, teacher saying bye for the summer, present giving, picnics etc. It's not just the parents who should know, the kids should too.
I get it if it's a missed INSET but that's different.

Laserwho · 11/07/2025 14:57

Why would you care so much when you don't have kids in the schools? There's a name for this, stalker

FfaCoff · 11/07/2025 15:06

It is pretty odd. I mean, I can almost imagine the op spotting the kids in uniform and immediately messaging her friends to confirm that school has definitely ended and there are no other activities on.
It's perfectly normal to know where your mates kids go to school but I doubt many people know with absolute certainty when they break up and whether there are any other activities on at the end of term...

smileymylie25 · 11/07/2025 15:51

There is always so much going on at my children’s schools that I can’t always remember every single date. It’s overwhelming at times. It’s nice to know there are people out there like you judging though.

Alohamo · 11/07/2025 15:56

I accidentally mis read a school email and missed an inset day at the end of May half term so we turned up at school in uniform when it was shut. Thankfully I've got the emotional maturity to laugh at myself about it, kids got a nice extra day off school and saw me model the right behavior when you make a mistake. (I now double check the newsletter though!)

Autie · 11/07/2025 16:03

I'm autistic. I struggle with how school label the calenders - instead of having "last day of school" they put the date as "school closes". So is it closed on that day, or do they go to school that day? Turns out it means it's actually open but that's the last day. It's easily misunderstood.

ilovepixie · 11/07/2025 16:08

Very late to break up. Schools here have been off 2 weeks or more!

I didn’t realise schools were so different, where are you? Mine are still at school until the 22nd

anotherwordforit · 11/07/2025 16:12

Is this not a core primary memory for most people? That day when you turn up in uniform all ready to learn and it’s actually an inset/training day or the school holidays 😆

CuriousKangaroo · 11/07/2025 16:27

I don’t know. But I do wonder how little one must have going on in one’s life to care.

Wetellyourstory · 11/07/2025 16:33

Just for info for the numerous posters who don’t realise - some counties have different school term dates. Everyone has broken up for the summer here (state, England). They go back 26th August.

Branwells77 · 11/07/2025 17:13

I don’t understand why you are so bothered OP you remembered not to send your kids to school.
my mum once sent my brother to school on a bank holiday Monday because she worked bank holidays so she never gave it a thought and sent him on his way my brother was too young to know any better he was absolutely fine.
