Why can’t parents look at the term dates for DC schools

Schools here, broke up yesterday. Today on the way to shopping, I saw about 4 sets of kids and parents with children wearing school uniforms. I have friends who have DC attend these schools (2 schools) and there are no day trips or classes today.

My friends knew the term dates as on parents pages and WhatsApp groups

Can’t imagine seeing that, judging, and coming online to post about it to be honest.

ShesTheAlbatross · 11/07/2025 10:42

I find this a bit hard to believe. Even if you don’t check the dates, the last day of school isn’t something that just isn’t mentioned in class at all. The children would know surely? there must be a reason they were going in.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 11/07/2025 10:44

What! Is today the last day of term? SHIT!!!!

Every term there’s at least one person on our class WhatsApp asking whether they’re in school the following week the day before half term. This information is readily available on the school website, repeated in the weekly newsletter and mentioned on the class chat. Boggles my mind as to how people live like this.

My DCs school are very very good at communication - a clear email once a week with key information highlighted at the top, reminder emails for important things and even reminder texts in some cases. Reminders of INSET days and term dates are at the top of every email as well. It absolutely boggles my brain how so many parents turn up on inset days/miss key dates for their kids/frequently ask in the WhatsApp group when the end of term is. I find it totally irresponsible imho

DuskyPink1984 · 11/07/2025 10:48

I made this mistake twice when my mum was terminally ill. Luckily, my neighbor saw us leaving the house and told me it was an inset day.

Sometimes, people have a lot going on and a lot on their mind.

spoonbillstretford · 11/07/2025 10:53

If you saw several going into school are you sure you didn't get it wrong?

State schools in England don't break up until around 23rd July.

the80sweregreat · 11/07/2025 10:53

Some schools break up before others. Many private schools are already done, but there will always be one or two parents who might not check the calendars or any special arrangements ( closing early or something like that) or the odd inset day! Life gets in the way I suppose.

TwelvePercent · 11/07/2025 10:55

It's all about perspective really.

I'm more judgemental of the parents who don't send their kids to school and/or don't provide proper shoes & clothes than the ones who get the dates wrong.

But you do you OP 💪🏼

Ours broke up yesterday and go back at the end of August so yes there are different dates throughout England.

Are you one of those Leicestershire lot 😂

Doone22 · 11/07/2025 11:09

My mum sent me to school on the wrong day more than once. I don't hate her. Sounds like you're very judgemental and like everyone else to be perfect like you .
Plus of course some people are carrying such a massive mental load things get missed. Lucky you if you have brain space to do everything right.

Magenta82 · 11/07/2025 09:52

Seems very early to break up, round here they have another week and a half to go.

My kids have been on holiday for a week already - private school. It’s going to be a loooong summer

minipie · 11/07/2025 11:11

Agree with pp, if you saw 4 sets in the space of one journey it seems more likely it’s you that’s wrong OR the school messed up its comms somehow.

BuildbyNumbere · 11/07/2025 11:12

Bloody hell … they’ve made a mistake! They’ll get there, realise and go home. Not exactly the end of the world. What’s it got to do with you and why do you need to create a thread about it?? Hopefully you never get anything wrong in future!!

JMSA · 11/07/2025 11:14

If only they were as perfect as you.

DontBeADick11 · 11/07/2025 11:15

Why does it bother you so much you felt the need to come on here, judge them and moan about it?!

SoSoLong · 11/07/2025 11:15

I once took my kids to school on an inset day. I'm a busy parent and I made a mistake, no one died as a result. We've also got staggered finishing days and hours depending on school year so it's not that difficult to get it wrong.

Tinkerbel64 · 11/07/2025 11:16

And you wrote this because.......some people have nothing better to do than to mind other people's buisiness.....i find this so very strange with no actual point to anything at all maybe get a hobby & let people live they own lives mistakes as well because no one is perfect

BallerinaRadio · 11/07/2025 11:17

What on earth has it got to do with you to the point you're posting about it on Mumsnet?

Shall we all point and laugh at the parents who might have got it wrong? Judge them? Shame them?

Awful judgy post if it's genuine

HoppingPavlova · 11/07/2025 11:18

How does this effect you?

TheLemonLemur · 11/07/2025 11:22

Why are you worried about it? How do you know it's not your friend who is wrong/fibbing and not sending her kids in rather than r groups of people all not getting the message. Seems odd to me as well as council website we got a reminder via app, text and email. We also have early closure at 1pm on last day maybe that's just my council though!

L0309 · 11/07/2025 11:24

Because they are human beings that make mistakes!

Hankunamatata · 11/07/2025 11:24

Everyone makes mistakes.

You dont know what's going on in someone's life

MageQueen · 11/07/2025 11:25

I'd feel sorry for those families as they clearly completely missed that memo. Probably in the deluge of 40000 emails from the school.

The ones that annoy me are the ones who KNOW the date might not be right, and who then go on the whatsapp group to ask the rest of us. Why can't they just go on the school website and check!?
