To ask what you think about Starmer’s plan to stop the boats?

1000 replies

WhereIsMyJumper · 10/07/2025 22:30

I cannot see how his ‘one in one out’ plan is going to help. I also can’t understand why France is cooperating with us. What’s the incentive?

If you don’t agree with this plan, what would your answer be?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ckg6x4g6gg6t

Starmer says 'one in, one out' migrant deal with France to begin within weeks

He says small boats migrants will be returned to France, in exchange for asylum seekers who have not tried to enter the UK illegally.

@TopPocketFind Not that lazy argument again. So what do we do ?claim asylum in Italy for free, stop working and claim benefits because 'The Romans ' 🙄

Lol

don't forget Albania and Eritrea, somehow we owe them as well

I love it. "Only read the thread title...totally not interested in arguments.."

And then took the time to write an argument for other people to read. Presumably expecting people will be interested in your argument.

Funny.

mmm... I thought that I added an opinion in response to thread title. Is an opinion = an argument? I thought argument = "You're wrong and here's why" statements.

I guess argument in the 2nd definition below is what I said, fair enough. A set of reasons were given for my rationale, I suppose.

So what I'm totally not interested in is heated debate and yelling each other. Can I at least claim to have posted statements that weren't heated or yelling at someone?

Of course. Especially Eritrea. We need to bow down and take a knee and whip ourselves because of behaviour of distant ancestors and be punished eternally. (Seems to be working well for us doesn't it ? Gained loads of respect and better relations) 😒

Give it try, not sure what your grounds for seeking asylum are but I am sure you can come up with something.

Would you like to borrow a lilo?

You're making an argument by giving a subjective opinion. I would have thought.

We send them somewhere like Rwanda. A system which other countries are looking at using.

Hang on...what was 2/3 years ago? Are you saying concern over immigration is a new thing?? It's been a worry since 1999.

Edited

I can remember people banging on about it in the 1960s, when they objected to immigrants from the West Indies, and the early 70s, when Uganda deported thousands of Asians, many of whom had British passports and consequently had the right to settle in the UK.

lovemybooks · 11/07/2025 20:01

@smallglassbottle absolutely agree with you. How everyone else can’t see this is beyond me.

Yes please 😁

But I'd need to be guaranteed that the country I'll be going to will have nice soft, lax laws that will guarantee I'll be rescued by them and put in a hotel ..

The French won't take them back. Therefore you are trying to dump people in another country without their permission. If the French would take them back, they'd already be doing it. Hence cloud cuckoo land.

Yes, we lost the Dublin agreement "right to return" when we left the EU. Classic case of be careful what you wish for.

BoredZelda · 11/07/2025 00:12

I say again, define “safe”?

If that house has holes in the roof, is soaking wet, there’s very little food, and there are people outside who want to kick you in the teeth if you leave, how long do you stay there?

So France is unsafe ? Belgium? Italy ? Portugal ? Spain ? Netherlands? I could go on.

Why cross that channel ? That dangerous choppy watered channel ?

One reason: lax rules that are easily manipulated and free money and accommodation

This was so low in numbers it barely means much. Plus we took more than returned.

The majority of asylum seekers do stop in the first safe country.

Ted27 · 11/07/2025 20:24

@SquishedMallow

You are correct Rwanda is in Africa, a landlocked country in the middle and 'Christian'
So you can't know much about Iran, Iraq, Albania, Afghanistan which you seem to think are in close proximity and are are culturally more similar to Rwanda than the UK. Even Eritera is around 1500 miles from Rwanda, hardly close neighbours.

Tiny number coming on boats? Are you joking?

You're lucky that your area has very little immigrants. If you had more, you might change your tune.

Exactly!

Yes, genuine asylum seekers and not economic migrants like the ones coming to the UK, and not just by boats but by doing mickey mouse university degrees with no intention of ever leaving. Amongst many other methods

TopPocketFind · 11/07/2025 20:32

In 2024, 16% of immigrants were refugees and asylum seekers.

But yes, they are the reason you can't get a doctor's appointment of a job as deliveroo driver Hmm

Sold! There's only one island where this seems possible...I've looked into it , and it's the UK. There's lots of extremely naive people who will swallow everything you tell them too : you really don't have to try too hard. Lets go !

On dear, talk about missing the point. If your referring to my deliveroo comment, it's not that they're ' taking away jobs', it's that asylum seekers are not supposed to be working at all! But take a walk down your local high street and this might not tally up with the reality. Didn't chris philp expose all this a while back?

Statistics should be taken with a pinch of salt anyway. You can make a bunch of statistics say anything you want them to say. All depends on the data collected and how the questions are worded.

Let's go! Almost guaranteed asylum being granted too, not such high acceptance rates in other places I note.
