To ask what you think about Starmer’s plan to stop the boats?

1000 replies

WhereIsMyJumper · 10/07/2025 22:30

I cannot see how his ‘one in one out’ plan is going to help. I also can’t understand why France is cooperating with us. What’s the incentive?

If you don’t agree with this plan, what would your answer be?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ckg6x4g6gg6t

Starmer says 'one in, one out' migrant deal with France to begin within weeks

He says small boats migrants will be returned to France, in exchange for asylum seekers who have not tried to enter the UK illegally.

The French can’t secure their borders

France has 1,709 miles of border. Exactly how the fuck are we supposed to secure 1,709 miles?

Lovesstaggbeetle · 11/07/2025 18:06

No France can't secure it's borders, I remember President hollande declaring shaking after the bataclan attack " France is closing its borders * at the same time the attackers were flitting back to Belgium.

Tbf it’s up to us to do more. I’m surprised the French put up with a lot of what they do.

Although the next GE is relevant in France too and hardline measures might be suggested there.

It wouldn’t make any difference. Once in Europe people can move through borders. The French can’t stop them, not because they can’t secure the borders though

stuckdownahole · 11/07/2025 18:13

Starmer's plan is as good as any other plan I've heard - not much use.

It seems as inevitable as climate change now. These guys are going to come here, then we have to look after them for x number of months while their (usually fake or heavily embellished) claim for political asylum is processed, knowing they may cause the sort of trouble that underemployed and frustrated young men tend to get involved in.

I've lived in a Middle Eastern country as an expat / temporary economic migrant. There are pleasant African men who work as security guards, 12 hours on, 12 hours off, every day, and surlier men who work on construction sites in the baking heat. These jobs are incredibly crappy by Western standards and they have to live in cramped and highly basic accommodation. Yet they pay gangmasters to get to this place and get these jobs!

We have been insulated from the fact that most of the world lives as peasants in poverty while we complain about not being allowed flexible working. Now those problems are landing on our shores.

One European country, don't know where, will elect the hard right who will put fences and gun turrets up around their borders and tell the EU to fuck off and mind their own business when they are chided for failing to follow the relevant agreements. Then enough of the rest will go down the same path that it becomes the norm.

We can do a few things first: ID cards, refusing more asylum claims, streamlining the appeal system against those refusals to a simple procedural check - but ultimately none of it will really work.

Alex have you actually offered any solutions yourself yet

Have you been following the thread?

Presumably not as i 've said repeatedly to give the Starmer Macron plan a chance, as there is nothing - serious - on the table.

MaturingCheeseball · 11/07/2025 16:47

Yes, good point about France’s borders being porous.

I know in Italy the problem is boats setting off from Africa and either making for Lampadusa (nearest Italian point) or “rescue” boats actually picking migrants up from African coast. The migrants do not want to stay in Italy: they make their way up through Europe and destroy their papers.

I think Europe will be increasingly powerless to deal with this. The UK though is weak in that we have no ID cards and an out-of-control black market. Small companies are cutting staff, yet you see 15 blokes working in car washes/barbers. If they’re all on minimum wage with NI contributions then I’ll eat my hat.

Are the UKBA spot checking these employers? Big fines should ensue.

There is no reason why everyone who comes here in a boat from France, with no ID, shouldn’t be issued with a biometric information card, face and fingerprints, showing all their details, including their status here.

Alexandra2001 · 11/07/2025 18:17

@stuckdownahole How would fences and gun turrets work for the UK, would we gun them down as boats came into range?

BTW Some former Eastern European countries have erected fences and troops., Finland also closed its border to Russia.

Having a secure external EU border isn't against EU rules.

EasternStandard · 11/07/2025 18:21

Of course there other serious suggestions. They just need voter mandate.

That applies to UK, France or anywhere else in EU.

Lovesstaggbeetle · 11/07/2025 18:22

@stuckdownahole orban already does.
He has his borders patrolled with vicious dogs.

Lovesstaggbeetle · 11/07/2025 18:27

Argh right ok Alex , sorry I didn't realise that regurgitating that comment was an actual plan or idea or contrition to this thread except being stamers main cheer leader

Ted27 · 11/07/2025 14:17

@SquishedMallow

Do you know where Rwanda is or anything about its culture or religion?

It's an African country (same continent as many arriving on boats ) I should imagine it's culturally more similar to their departed destinations than the UK. We're racist here too apparently, so wouldn't imagine a majority white country that's allegedly so racist and hostile would be their best bet when compared to Rwanda.

Religion I expect is likely Christian or Catholic, possibly Muslim in some areas. As we're a mostly atheist country that doesn't adhere strictly to religious teachings and ways of life, I'd imagine Rwanda is more culturally similar than good old Blighty. Don't suppose Rwanda offers many benefits cash deposits either ? Or that warzone called 'France' that they departed to risk their lives....

Usernamenotavailable19 · 11/07/2025 18:31

Geminijes · 11/07/2025 14:50

In reply to whatever else they get..

Free NHS prescriptions.
Free dental treatment.
Free NHS sight tests.
The full value of a voucher towards the cost of glasses and contact lenses.
Free NHS wigs and fabric supports.
Refund of necessary costs of travel to receive NHS treatment.

More than what an OAP receives!

This is what they get and @BoredZelda reckons they only get soggy cheese sandwiches in a mouldy hotel 😂

So by that the whole of Europe is similar ?

Lovesstaggbeetle · 11/07/2025 18:38

Yes Seymour and then sent back for trying to enter illegally.

Alexandra2001 · 11/07/2025 18:39

Lovesstaggbeetle · 11/07/2025 18:27

Argh right ok Alex , sorry I didn't realise that regurgitating that comment was an actual plan or idea or contrition to this thread except being stamers main cheer leader

So far the main ideas other than the only one actionable are:

Start a war with France
ID cards costing 10s of billions and taking years before issue and forced on a population that doesn't want them.
Gun the migrants down or leave them to starve once they get here.

Or create a mythical land where we can send them...

I ve excluded Rwanda as despite 3 years of trying, it never took a single migrant.

All i have suggested is to give the plan a chance, lets see in 6 months... instead of dismissing it, you so hate Labour that even that isn't possible.

The only other idea is to crack down on the black economy but as i pointed out, thats very hard without the people in Councils Police HMRC etc to enforce.

Whats your great plan oh wise one?

Lovesstaggbeetle · 11/07/2025 18:43

@Alexandra2001 interesting synopsis of much greater and in depth ideas .

I see you are not interested ,no problem we are all just chatting and venting aren't we.
Nothing that we say here actually gets actioned

EasternStandard · 11/07/2025 18:46

The ‘mythical land’ thing isn’t a serious rebuttal.

It just takes mandate.

SquishedMallow · 11/07/2025 18:50

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 11/07/2025 18:35

Culturally if you're comparing continent to continent - yes.

Apart from Starmers plan and reducing pull factors, nothing else would work in the short to medium term & some of the ideas mooted could start at the very least, a trade war.

Even the Australia plan, if possible, as shown by Rwanda, would take years to set up, meanwhile crossing continue unabated.

TBH you seem to be the one who isn't interested, least of all anything constructive, so i'll leave you to your musings.

TDF beckons, another thing the French get right 😎

suburburban · 11/07/2025 18:57

TopPocketFind · 11/07/2025 14:46

We used to disregard other countries borders and are now upset that people from those colonised countries want to seek refuge here.

Far too simplistic

Lovesstaggbeetle · 11/07/2025 19:15

Alexandra if it's all so hopeless and you have reduced many excellent ideas , what are you getting out of this thread ?
Just curious ?

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 11/07/2025 19:21

SquishedMallow · 11/07/2025 18:50

Culturally if you're comparing continent to continent - yes.

I disagree. The countries of Africa are not homogenous nor are the countries of Europe and Asia.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 11/07/2025 19:21

Oh here we go, another lazy "gotcha" .

So : I said : Rwanda will be culturally more similar for people departing neighbouring African countries than a majority white European western country (UK)

You chewed it up and regurgitated it as : "Africans are all the same. Europeans are all the same " I suppose I also said black people were one big homogenous mass too.or perhaps that's what you'd like me to be inferring to fit your narrative?

SquishedMallow · 11/07/2025 19:29

suburburban · 11/07/2025 18:57

Far too simplistic

@TopPocketFind Not that lazy argument again. So what do we do ?claim asylum in Italy for free, stop working and claim benefits because 'The Romans ' 🙄
