To ask what you think about Starmer’s plan to stop the boats?

1000 replies

WhereIsMyJumper · 10/07/2025 22:30

I cannot see how his ‘one in one out’ plan is going to help. I also can’t understand why France is cooperating with us. What’s the incentive?

If you don’t agree with this plan, what would your answer be?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ckg6x4g6gg6t

Starmer says 'one in, one out' migrant deal with France to begin within weeks

He says small boats migrants will be returned to France, in exchange for asylum seekers who have not tried to enter the UK illegally.

The boats were arriving in signifnumbers under the Tories - why didn't THEY do the "simple" turning back of the boats or deportations back to France thst some pp claim could be done?

Instead,.they spaffed an astonishing amount on the Rwanda caper - and not a single person was sent there. If turning back the boats/deportations back to France is so easy - why didn't the Tories do it?

Yes it is - if I am an oppressed woman in Afghanistan and have relatives in Manchester, and speak English but not Italian or French, it makes every sense to want to come to the UK.

Their English isn’t that good- the U.K. spends a lot on interpreters!
just to correct a pp who said they must have the money to come here - some are loaned the money by gang masters, and they will be in their debt for years

Because they are scumbags too.

The same way anyone else is arrested without using lethal force.
Detain in the Channel and take them back to Calais.

Oh i didn't know we still owned Calais?

Do you think the French will agree to this fantastic idea of yours?

Or will they just close channel ports in retaliation, scrap all fishing deals and the EU will do similar in support... revoke air worthy certificates, banning all UK imports.... chuck us out of Horizon..... you get the idea....

GreenGully · 11/07/2025 15:51

No, because I belong here. I'm sure some pensioners wouldn't mind swapping though! They wouldn't have to choose between heating or eating.

'Not allowed to work whilst your claim is being processed.' Doesn't stop them though does it. Illegal working blitz catches Indian builders | Construction Enquirer News
Illegal immigrant working on Sunderland cannabis farm to pay off debts caught by police hiding in loft
Nationwide clampdown on delivery riders working illegally - GOV.UK
Police raid barbers and vape shops suspected of being fronts for crime gangs - BBC News

Yes all the things I have listed are cushty. Pray tell which other countries offer the level of care that we do? Last I checked Macron had them living in tents.

As those articles suggest, the main draw seems to be the black economy -, the opportunity to work illegally in the UK.

The rub is, if the government cracks down on them as promised then in the short term you get MORE articles about people being arrested for working illegally, illegal work gangs broken up. So do the articles you posted suggest:

  1. That illegal activity is happening so the labour government is failing in its attempt to smash the gangs
  2. That illegal activity is being interrupted/cracked down on with increasing frequency so the labour government is succeeding in its attempt to smash the gangs

How you interpret it is down to how youalresdy feel about the government. But the trap for any government is that dealing with illegal activity leads to more articles, rises in the crime statistics

I am generally pro-immigration, but I'm at a point now where I think all those coming on boats need to be removed and refused asylum.

We should not be prioritising helping people who have tens of thousands of pounds to pay criminal gangs to travel across continents (and are physically able to do so).

Many borrow the money off gangmasters, and will take years to pay it off.

  1. Delays in asylum processing drive costs up
  2. The UK has definitely been ripped of by some of the accomodation providers and subcontractors like G4S (aka G4FS)

I agree with you that costs are too high. But it doesn't automatically translate into immigrants getting cushy living standards. See also, the unbelievable levels of profit grubbing in the children's home industry.

What is accommodation like in other countries? I assume some people are put in centres (not all in tent cities)

If you look it up there’s an overview.

The UK spends significantly more per asylum seeker than many other developed countries, particularly on housing and related support. In 2023, the UK spent an estimated £25,600 per asylum seeker, which was two and a half times more than its closest G7 peer, Canada.

Yes you re right, all this spend happened under Sunak who you believe was highly competent......

Now however, its Starmer who is to blame for this state of affairs...

Aside, i wonder if this cost is down to terrible private sector contracts? notably in Hotels?
Didn't a Hotel grp recent get barred from Asylum housing due to fraud? With a HO staffer being jailed for approving bogus claims....

Well done Labour for trying to stop this corruption they inherited.

Approximately 70% of asylum seekers in the UK since 2001 have come from countries with a history of British colonial rule

So not all if that makes it easier for you to understand

So you basically believe that, any country which colonised another in years gone past, must accept these citizens due to history? Gosh, what a challenge we have ahead then. What happens once the current citizens are replaced by the previously colonised ones? Will They not then become the colonised ones themselves? Where do they move to? How far Do we go back, and who decides - a hundred years, a thousand? most countries will have colonised another at some point in civilisation. What a head scratching conundrum and entirely debased of logic.

What fishing deals? The ones where they steal our fish. Great one.

'EU will do similar in support... revoke air worthy certificates, banning all UK imports.... chuck us out of Horizon' Rather dramatic and not at all something that would happen. The EU has not boycotted France for turning a blind eye? How about Poland or Greece for their take on border control?

What is accommodation like in other countries? I assume some people are put in centres (not all in tent cities)

I know in the Netherlands it's a mixture of centres and hotel rooms. There's the same debate here as there. But the Netherlands also has legalised prostitution, which brings in a lot of money, and a black economy around that. Which they turned a blind eye to even though the undercurrent of people trafficking etc is well known. See also their tolerance of illegal drug gangs (not talking cannabis) for years. Now they are cracking down on it. It's good to do so. But pretending it's only a migrant problem is crazy. The drugs are consumed by rich Europeans. The (legal) sex industry is held afloat by migration from Eastern Europe and further (often women who don't know what they are getting into). im glad they are sorting out criminal gangs. But my god the hypocrisy.

What about people who lie about DV convictions?

Yes..any of those in the cabinet now should be out. Or anyone convicted of DV in any past cabinet. Agreed. Whatever stripe.

What do you think about the current offenders though? That I referred to. Probably the most relevant to us at the moment?

Forcible entering another country with armed troops..... to take back migrants we don't... You think France will stand idly by?? Would we?

Lets try it shall we?

When the UK didn't act fast enough on Covid controls, France/EU threatened to shut the ports and tunnel & we quickly complied.

Yes lets try it shall we. It wouldn't be forcibly entering a country. Simply dropping them back off in the shallows. Wars have been started for less than what the French are currently getting away with.

No that just shows you re own bias.... Tories - Good, Labour - Bad.

I don't think everything Labour do is great far from it and i have said so but on this border deal, i will give it a chance first, heck even Clavinova has said similar and she is hardly from the left of politics.

ChillPills · 11/07/2025 16:27

Would you like to swap?

Shared hotel room, £49 preloaded on card per week to live on, less if your accommodation is catered. Not allowed to work whilst your claim is being processed. Protesters outside. Scapegoated.

Fancy hotel? Even a 5* star *hotel is just a room without the 5 star service provided.

Healthcare, basic human provision. Unless you would like illnesses going unchecked.

Edited

Well, the not being able to work has been debunked recently has it not? Didn't a certain Minster visit an asylum seekers hotel where he found deliveroo bikes and asylum seekers about to start their shifts?

Namitynamename · 11/07/2025 16:27

@EasternStandard sorry I meant to say I think the Dutch government is ripped of less. But they have similar issues with shadow economies to us.
They also complain about UK stag parties visiting Amsterdam being rowdy. But actually still want the stag parties to come visit the red light district because that makes them money.
It's a similar hypocrisy to people here who complain about illegals/people working illegally but still take drugs, pay for cheap cigarettes, pay for sex, pay under the table for work. They are in a relationship with the criminal gangs as well. But have more power not to be than the immigrants at the other end of the chain.
