In the country that's stretched to its limits, today it was announced that Keir has agreed with Mr Macron that just 50 illegal migrants per week will be sent away.

I know so many people are totally fed up with the state of the country.

Will there be protests?

So, a wealth tax?

If so, you do realise that wealth taxes have been shown to not work, and have been abandoned in the majority of developed countries that tried them. Even Starmer and Reynolds have ruled them out.

”Hoarding wealth” - not that hoary old phrase again… Why no mention of those that have “created wealth”?

The issue for the UK in terms of creating wealth is that quite a lot of it appears to be tied up in illiquid assets. Like private buildings.

For an owner, this is terrific because there is barely any tax to be paid after purchase. And what tax there might be can be covered by renting out and making the occupant pay the effective tax.

The issue for the UK is not that we don’t have wealthy people who own assets here; it’s that the structure of ownership means that really such owners, either by means of hotels or indeed private rentals are in a unique position to take public money to manage asylum seekers.

Neither Conservative or Labour have really managed to affect that. They will be handing over tax money to already very rich people to manage this issue. That is wealth creation, but for a very few, and certainly not what the UK needs more of. We have ruined our own housing sector with housing benefit, fractions of social housing and soaring prices for private owners. I would love to know how it will be fixed.
