In the country that's stretched to its limits, today it was announced that Keir has agreed with Mr Macron that just 50 illegal migrants per week will be sent away.

I know so many people are totally fed up with the state of the country.

Will there be protests?

No I could go to Australia - they do accept 70+% of asylum claims at least, and they give some asylum support whilst you’re waiting. I’d probably attempt a legal visa and then apply whilst there legally, but not all boats are turned back anyway.

the answer is to throw money at the problem.
speed up the asylum seeker application process, so they are deported or working. Not hanging about in limbo in hotels. It’s no good for anyone.

for what it’s worth Labour have a better handle on this situation than conservatives have. They’ve deported more in comparable time periods, and have reduced hotel use.

The number coming in are higher, continually everyone is being an amnesty, so if you come you stay. Spending on asylum system is up, hence proving to be an even bigger attraction for this coming over.

You’re falling for propaganda.

If you land at the shore you won’t be considered ever.

Oh so anyone who doesn’t ‘feel’ safe in any part of the world can pick any other country to live in?

The Batshittery is real.

It applies to you too if you ever find yourself in need of asylum

There have been suggestions by some commentators that the hotel bill is down because there's been a move to increase the use private landlords/rented accomodation rather than hotels.

It would be interesting to see if the total bill for accommodation has gone down, remained static or gone up.

How much does it cost to keep people indefinitely in detention centres?

Edited

The home office pays companies like serco to actively process out locals by deliberately outbidding on private rentals. It’s so that the can massage the figures on hotel use.

Move migrants into private rentals at inflated rates to give the impression that they have the problem under control. While paying even more in private rents and pricing out the locals.

Great, isn’t it.

Don’t trust these government figures, they have most likely been heavily manipulated.

Well numbers are up and they’re living somewhere so yep.

@Jennpspp on private rentals is relevant. Labour need hotel headlines when using private rentals is the same issue.

Where does @Julen7 find trusted numbers?

The migration observatory or ONS similar. Something not very sound about “hotel costs for migrants down 30% the government says”. Oh really?

Of course you don’t. First there are no figures, then when you’re presented with them you don’t trust them. Why are you even bothering when your prejudice is so firmly entrenched and your mind is so closed?

Asylum seekers can work illegally and often do.

An asylum seeker raped a 12-year-old girl above a shop that he was illegally working in. Mohammed Wahid Mohammed told the victim it was "not safe on the streets" and gave her a vape and crisps at Villa Supermarket in Handsworth before attacking her in a bedroom, a court was told.
The girl was vulnerable having left home and travelled to Birmingham on her own. Wahid Mohammed wept in the dock as he was sentenced to 12 years in prison after admitting two counts of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13, and was found guilty of three counts of rape by a jury. He had claimed that girl consented to sex despite being too young to do so.

He should be returned to his home town! Instead gets a slap on the wrist.

The whole system is chaotic. Once you get away from that it looks so strange to see people battle to keep it.

There’s a lot of glee around. It’s almost as if some people want the country to fare badly.

Unfortunately, that is unfolding with a Labour government, whether one would wish it or not.

Julen7 · 03/08/2025 11:33

If the numbers go down so do the costs. A child of ten could work that one out.

Right.

There are fires seemingly burning everywhere, with Labour in government, but not in power.
