I ate a tinned pie and loved every minute of it

Earlier today I did a bad thing.

I usually eat very sensibly, limit processed food, healthy, balanced. But I’ve had a bad week. And I saw it - a Fray Bentos tinned pie.

My gran used to give us them as kids and I was overcome with a wave of nostalgia.

I bought it. I cooked it. I ate it.

And yes, I enjoyed it.

I might have a Pot Noodle next week.

As mentioned above, I loved the all day breakfasts in a tin & a hamwich. I also remember those reformed chicken/turkey things shaped like a drumstick & covered in breadcrumbs. I used to roll a piece of bread & butter around one with ketchup. Lovely

And whenever I went round my friend's house for lunch we'd look through her mum's chest freezer for something to eat but always ended up with tinned hot dog sausages in bread & butter 😊

Oh, those turkey drummers were divine. Bernard Matthews also used to do a breaded turkey burger with cheese in the middle. They were A+ too. This thread is really making me rethink my veganism all these years 😂But I bet none of them are as nice as they used to be anyway.

I can't stand fray bentos pies but I reckon I could eat a block of Spam straight from the tin 😋

LovesToWalk · 08/07/2025 11:06

I'm fairly low at the moment, so am having a lot of tins of 'beans and sausages' and 'smiley faces' 😳

Verv · 08/07/2025 11:20

I used to love the chicken and mushroom one

idolikealiein · 08/07/2025 11:21

When my son was at uni he used to have FB pie in the middle of a large Yorkshire pudding with gravy on top. His favourite ever creation

LovesToWalk · 08/07/2025 11:39

@idolikealiein GENIUS!

oooh, I can do that with condensed milk 😋. Straight from the tin, eaten with a spoon, and making drizzle shapes while waiting for it to stop . . . well, drizzling off the spoon

I only recently found out Fray Bentos is actually a town in Uruguay where the pies originally came from

I do love the occasional one

I thought he was a Cuban dictator!

crazysummertan · 08/07/2025 14:03

YANBU.

I love those “ultra processed” meals.
I don’t eat them every day or every week for that matter, but somehow even though they’re the worse things for me to consume, they taste the best. I think it’s psychological because they’re tied to childhood.

but no, YANBU at all

Twiglets1 · 08/07/2025 14:15

What are you having tomorrow - a Findus deep fried cheese pancake?

I wouldn't blame you - I used to enjoy both the tinned pies and the pancakes growing up. Would be a guilty pleasure now.

Davros · 08/07/2025 14:36

BangersAndGnash · 08/07/2025 09:15

Oooh, a FB pie followed by a Heinz Tinned Steamed Pudding, preferably Treacle.

And I am sure they once made a ginger one, anyone remember that?

Edited

With tinned Ambrosia custard?

With tinned Ambrosia custard?

Oh tinned Ambrosia custard, now you’re talking! My Xmas Day pudding is a microwave steamed chocolate pudding with Ambrosia Chocolate Custard (I don’t like Christmas Pudding).

Total indulgence but I feel sick until New Year’s Eve after that….

thefamous5 · 08/07/2025 16:33

Steak and kidney FB pie, with a big chunk of it whacked between two slices of cheap white bread and butter, sith brown sauce to dunk it in.

Food of the gods

Kimwestonhelpless · 08/07/2025 17:13

I was pissed and ate one uncooked a vvv long time ago.

Turmerictolly · 08/07/2025 18:12

I think I’d have to draw the line at a Vesta curry. Didn’t they have sultanas in? Some things are better left in the past.

Turmerictolly · 08/07/2025 18:13

Loved a tinned treacle sponge pudding though - used to have with Carnation tinned cream.

chimichangaz · 08/07/2025 18:41

Oh my god, turkey drummers were the business!! Me and my partner ate them every week years ago before we knew how unhealthy they were….just googled them and apparently they taste like sawdust now.

TheOriginalEmu · 08/07/2025 21:25

ConnieHeart · 08/07/2025 08:52

I saw a discounted Vesta chow mein in Tesco the other day & nearly bought it. What are they like?

Utterly disgusting in the best way possible 😂

StMarie4me · 08/07/2025 21:34

GrandmasCat · 06/07/2025 23:28

Actually, they are much healthier than you think, miles better than crisps or chips, but equally bad in salt content.

They do not even make you fat as they have no carbs 🤷🏼‍♀️

It doesn’t work like that… a calorie is a calorie and I’m a keto officianado! If a person is eating very low carb, fat will not put weight on them as the body will burn fur energy. However the calories in a bag of scratchings in amongst a carb based diet are just calories.

Plmnki · 08/07/2025 21:37

Good for you! A harmless culinary bit of time travel.

i am doing the equivalent on the telly front - watching programmes from childhood. I think so many people want the comfort if a bit of nostalgia these days.

garlicktoms · 08/07/2025 21:38

You filthy animal, it will be tinned hamburgers in gravy next!

Lookuptotheskies · 08/07/2025 21:38

Oh wow I've not had one of those for years. I'm wondering if I'd enjoy it. May have to partake in the experiment.

I also reading that had a flashback to findus crispy pancakes. My dad used to serve them up with proper chip pan chips, and short tinned spaghetti.

Left · 08/07/2025 21:47

Discovered these when I first left home as a teenager, feel all nostalgic now!

Findis Crispy pancakes were also on the meal rotation, and I’d push the limits of my culinary skills with egg and chips if I felt like cooking something a bit more fancy 🤣

BoarBrush · 08/07/2025 21:52

I've never tried a bentos pie, I reckon I'll need to give it a bash.

I have a hamwich tea at least once a month, they're amazing. Golden drummers are absolutely revolting now, as are dinosaurs etc. My kids don't even eat any of this shit, just me! Findus pancakes are really disappointing now.

A corned beef and cheese sandwich on Warburtons farmhouse bread. A roll/sandwich and lorne/square sausage and cheese with a bit of ketchup.

Thank fuck it's bedtime or I might be away raiding the freezer.
