I ate a tinned pie and loved every minute of it

Earlier today I did a bad thing.

I usually eat very sensibly, limit processed food, healthy, balanced. But I’ve had a bad week. And I saw it - a Fray Bentos tinned pie.

My gran used to give us them as kids and I was overcome with a wave of nostalgia.

I bought it. I cooked it. I ate it.

And yes, I enjoyed it.

I might have a Pot Noodle next week.

Absolute filth in a tin. Lovely stuff. Jealous.

Offcom · 07/07/2025 10:55

If one had never tried a Fray Bentos pie, what’s a good entry level flavour?

Squirrelblanket · 07/07/2025 11:02

I used to eat these at uni, but only when other people were out of the house due to shame. 😂

JustSawJohnny · 07/07/2025 11:21

I try to avoid UPFs the majority of the time but sometimes you have to satisfy a craving.

I occasionally cave on packet noodles, pot noodles, cup a soups with croutons, flavoured crisps and sweets.

My son knows he gets one can of Spam a year and we cook and eat it as a family. Boy do we enjoy that meal 😂

The only thing I can't enjoy any more is supermarket bread and drinks with sweeteners in.

I'm not sure anything grim on an ingredients list could ever ruin pickled onion Monster Munch for me, though.

I love to have a “homemade” corned beef sandwich. White sliced, butter, Branston and two slices of M&S corned beef

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/07/2025 23:00

Oh, I had a flatmate at uni who pretty much lived on these - pie, and frozen mixed veg was his staple evening meal. One day I went into his cupboard looking for sugar (I don’t take it but had a friend round who liked it in her coffee) and it was like a supermarket shelf, stacked with all the tinned pies. No sugar.

Enigma53 · 07/07/2025 23:01

Could have been worse I guess. It could have been SPAM!! 🤢

Oh yes! I used to love a corned beef sandwich with a bit of branston pickle.
I don’t eat red meat, but dream of corned beef! 🤷‍♀️

Pivilepivling · 07/07/2025 23:17

My local butchers make lovely steak and kidney pies.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/07/2025 07:20

No issue with the pot noodle but the pie is a step too far for
me. I do like the tinned meat though from Sainsbury’s or M and S which is really no different.

Kleptronic · 08/07/2025 07:24

I've got spam fritters in my freezer. Every now and then I get them out and look at them, then put them back.

jeaux90 · 08/07/2025 07:59

God I love those! I also still buy the shitty burger cheese in those individual wrapper, can’t beat them if you are doing burgers at home IMO.

Downwiththmoonshine · 08/07/2025 08:01

How did you open it??? I nearly took my fingers off one one once 🤣

HurdyGurdy19 · 08/07/2025 08:09

I can see there's going to be a run on Fray Bentos pies now 😂

I've not had one for years, but I've just put a couple into my online basket.

I agree with PP about lack of meat, so may chuck a tin a stewed steak to top it up. If you're gonna go UPF, might as well go the whole hog 😁

I love Two Chubby Cubs blog/cookery books, and they had a recipe using a tin of Spam. I nearly fell through the floor when I saw the price. When did it get so expensive? Recipe was tasty though.

PollyBell · 08/07/2025 08:10

Why would you be unreasonable?

Ahsheeit · 08/07/2025 08:13

Anyone tried the vegetable one? I'm veggie and have seen them occasionally in Aldi, but not given in and bought one yet.

randomchap · 06/07/2025 23:16

I only recently found out Fray Bentos is actually a town in Uruguay where the pies originally came from

I do love the occasional one

Wow. That's an excellent fact. I had no idea

Wheech · 08/07/2025 08:20

I saw on Facebook recently that someone tried to take one of these pies through the new airport security scanners and got stopped on suspicion of carrying a land mine 😂

Awrite · 08/07/2025 08:28

My first Fray Bentos pie was at uni - present from my Nana

I'm going to lower the tone now but I loved Beanfeast. First time my Mum cooked it, we all thought it was real meat. Blimin tasty real meat. 😂

I really had a hankering for one, the pastry was fantastic, the innards like cat food. It made me sad as the inside of the steak and kidney puds is lovely.

Oh I want a steak and kidney pudding now. At quarter past 11.....

Do you want a Frey Bentos pie or will home made do? I make a large steak and kidney pie and steam it in the slow cooker.

@randomchap Quite a few foods are named after where they come from or where they were exported from.

Jaffa oranges come from Jaffa in Israel, Guinea fowl from Guinea. Peaches (persica) from Persia.

Sometimes it is a recipe rather than an export. Bolognese from Bologna, , Peking Duck...

OMG… those steak & kidney puddings in the little ‘half bowl’ tins!
Open the tin, put the ‘pudding’ on a plate, 2 mins in microwave..sheer unadulterated bliss…only improved with a dollop of HP sauce!
Thanks for reminding me of these!

There’s a scene in a famous film…either a James Bond or Indiana jones …where a limp it mine is put on a vehicle. They actually used Frey bentos pie tins painted green for this! Hope Harrison Ford got to taste it afterwards!

I have family living in Beijing….supermarkets are full of tins of spam!
Spam chop suey anyone?

soupyspoon · 08/07/2025 08:38

Theres nothing wrong with them but we are snobby about things in tins in the UK and thats why they fell out of favour, plus people think that pies are the work of the devil

The ingredients are not hugely different from what you would find if you made your own, if you used shop bought gravy or stock cubes, the only additions are things like starches and emulsifiers, probably so small as to make very little difference in terms of your overall diet.

As other posters have said, the impact of UPF and even the definition is not clear, is overstated.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 08/07/2025 08:47

Sounds like a new Katie Perry single.
