I ate a tinned pie and loved every minute of it

Earlier today I did a bad thing.

I usually eat very sensibly, limit processed food, healthy, balanced. But I’ve had a bad week. And I saw it - a Fray Bentos tinned pie.

My gran used to give us them as kids and I was overcome with a wave of nostalgia.

I bought it. I cooked it. I ate it.

And yes, I enjoyed it.

I might have a Pot Noodle next week.

AIBU?

I do love a Fray Bentos pie! Had one a few months ago and was surprised it was as good or better than i remembered!

I also like the fish-and-chip-shop-type steak and kidney pies, the oval one. Not much meat but so tasty. (for contrast, I had a poshish Pieminster or Cotswold Pie Co S&K the other day and found it too dry and overpacked with stringy beef and it tasted a bit parsnippy!)

Other things I like but shouldn't: Hamwiches. (I wonder if they still make Turkey Drummers? My dear old Nan used to fry two of those for my tea when I went round to her house. Usually she sliced them through the middle and fried them on both sides.)

Not unreasonable. I bought a Vesta Chow Mein I saw in home bargains for similar reasons.

Now I want a fray bentos pie…

I saw a discounted Vesta chow mein in Tesco the other day & nearly bought it. What are they like?

I saw on Facebook recently that someone tried to take one of these pies through the new airport security scanners and got stopped on suspicion of carrying a land mine 😂

We were going through security at Salzburg airport once and they were quite concerned about DD’s magic 8 ball that was in her hand luggage because it looked like a bomb!
@soupyspoon I don’t think pies are generally considered the work of the devil in the UK, I’ve always thought they are quite a favourite (of mine!)

Katemax82 · 08/07/2025 09:03

My husband always had fray bentos pies when we were first together, I had no.problem with them. I did have a problem with Mr brains faggotts

Sounds like a new Katie Perry single.

😂

I'm in the mood for a Fray Bentos pie now! Who remembers the layer of slime at the bottom if you don't cook it for quite long enough? Yum!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 08/07/2025 09:09

I think the real question is what tin opener you used to open it?

BangersAndGnash · 08/07/2025 09:15

Oooh, a FB pie followed by a Heinz Tinned Steamed Pudding, preferably Treacle.

And I am sure they once made a ginger one, anyone remember that?

BruisedNeckMeat · 08/07/2025 09:15

God, I used to love FB pies. Not the kidney one though, I think they do a plain steak. Crispy on top, soggy underneath, yummy!

I also used to like an All Day Breakfast from a tin.

Yes well you and me have good taste but hear the average person talk about pies or see many a thread on here where some one references pies and its wholly negative

I think theres a post on this one where someone says that - gasp - they buy a frozen pie sometimes and eat it with veg and say its not 'healthy'.

Nothing wrong with a pie. Its good solid nutritious food.

Catsandcannedbeans · 08/07/2025 09:23

What’s next? A Finders Crispy Pancake and a ciggie? Bacon Grill sandwich? OP you’re off the chain.

BedlingtonWillow · 08/07/2025 09:39

When we were kids, we used to make hamwich sandwiches every Saturday, to eat in front of the Gladiators on the TV. Two hamwiches in two slices of heavily buttered white sliced bread with tons of ketchup. I've been vegan for about 20 years now, but I still dream of them sometimes!

But, I've been told they've changed Hamwiches now, and they don't have the thick layer of cheese on top - just a few blobs distributed throughout the meat, so they don't sound as good anyway.

Kendodd · 08/07/2025 09:43

Ooh I remember those pies from my childhood (50 years ago). What a treat!
Honestly, it's absolute rubbish that we ate better in the past. I know my kids have been fed a million times better than I was as a child. They've never even once had the delights of a tinned pie. Or loads of other delicious shite I ate as a child.

NeedWineNow · 08/07/2025 09:52

We’ve always got one - DH loves them and will occasionally have one if he wants to eat earlier than me when I do an evening class during the week.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/07/2025 09:53

Did you have it with soggy tinned carrots for the full retro mid-week meal effect?

I still like tinned potatoes, but alas my Gen Alphas are unimpressed 🙄

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 08/07/2025 09:54

When I was a student I'd come home from the pub, cook one, scoop the soggy pasty from under that top crispy layer and make a sandwich out of it.
Bloody gorgeous.

Mistyglade · 08/07/2025 09:55

The Cuban leader Fray Bentos.

Could have been worse I guess. It could have been SPAM!! 🤢

Grilled spam is heaven on earth. As for spam fritters ❤️

chimichangaz · 08/07/2025 10:00

I was always partial to one of those but my absolute favourite ’non healthy’ meal is a steak slice, cauliflower cheese, carrots, mash and loads of gravy. Sprinkled with black pepper. Yum.

My favourite childhood meal (very cosmopolitan) was a Vesta chicken supreme from a packet. Delish.

elastamum · 08/07/2025 10:03

When we used to holiday in the caravan as kids, dinner was sometimes a fray bentos pie with tinned carrots and tinned new potatoes. We used to call the potatoes jum jills after the dragon food in a children's book.

Mindymomo · 08/07/2025 10:05

Who would think something that looks totally unappetising when raw, cooks so lovely. They are basically a gravy pie, my brother always has a couple in cupboard for emergencies when he cannot get out, along with tinned potatoes and tinned peas and carrots.

Brains faggots are disgusting these days. Used to be nice but now they're like mousse and all mushy. I get them from the butcher these days and they're really good, perfect on a chilly evening.

I tried a Vesta paella, for nostalgia, a while back and was bitterly disappointed.

A findus crispy pancake and a ciggie would be my last meal!

Lins77 · 08/07/2025 10:32

Findus crispy pancakes were the highlight of my childhood. How I yearned for them.

Had one as an adult and it was horrible 😭

Oh yes, I loved the cheese ones. Always a good day when we were allowed to have them.

Does anyone remember Walls Balls? Sort or round sausage balls coated in breadcrumbs? They were another frozen food highlight of childhood!
