AIBU to be disappointed about this?

Later this week, on my birthday, we're doing a long train journey to visit friends for a few days. Whenever we do these long journeys, we always book them over lunchtime, and do a "train picnic" of nice food e.g afternoon tea style and share some prosecco or anti pasta style and share some red. It means that our trip starts when we get in the train, and the journey flies by.

DH booked the train tickets, and he just accepted the default seating rather than selecting seats, and as a consequence we're stuck on a middle and aisle seat with no table. So lunch is pretty much going to be a sarnie and a bottle of water as there's no table space, the journey is going to be long, boring and uncomfortable, squashed in next to a stranger.

We've tried to change seats now, but as it's a couple of days away, there's no availability of seats at a table, and no availability in first class either.

I feel like instead of my birthday starting at 11.30am once we're on the train, it's not going to start until 3pm when we arrive, and the journey is something to be tolerated, rather than something to be enjoyed.

I don't want to be spoilt, and I get that I'm going to have a lovely time with my friends, but I'm really grumpy and disappointed. I think it's mostly because DH has form for this kind of stuff, always taking the quick, easy way, and never checking anything.

AIBU to be pissed off? And does anyone have any ideas of how to make the journey more fun, or special/treat lunch ideas possible to eat when sitting in a cramped middle seat?

😂 Didn't you study art at school? Surely you understand how "perspective" works? i.e. where parallel lines appear wider closer to the observer and seem to converge the further away into a vanishing point. (Think about standing on a straight train track where the rails run either side of where you're standing, but if you look into the distance the two rails appear to converge.) Your drawn line has completely ignored this rule of perspective (it should have come out to the right at the bottom of the photo, not to the left).

You might be overthinking a joke that I spent 0.1 seconds on

No, I really didn't - I thought it was funny and my laughing emoji at the beginning of the comment was for you. My written comment, however, was in anticipation of all the batshit posters who will come on here to tell you you're right (not getting the joke at all) - the same posters who've got so worked up previously on this thread, convinced that there's no way OP and her DH can "keep to their side of the table" with their "picnic". 🙄😂

And we managed to grab a table in Carriage C, and we enjoyed a lovely lunch, without offending anyone!

So your mini melt down was completely pointless then, excellent.

Well, all's well that ends well, and most importantly, you have the satisfaction of feeling like you won an imaginary argument against total strangers who don't actually care very much at all but merely commented on a post because you asked them to.

Bet your poor DP never hears the bloody end of it, you can dine out (pun not intended) on your imagined victory for years to come. 😶

Or, you know, just get on with your life now.

I would feel so weird eating that in front of other people on a train. I don’t know why though! And I don’t think you should be really because it’s just food (looks nice as well) so why does it make me cringe? I have some serious questions to ask myself. I’m glad you had a nice birthday - genuinely x

OP acknowledged that she was unreasonable to be so OTT about her DP’s mistake days ago. It’s all the batshit judgy posters who were looking for chance at a pile on and derailed the thread who deserve the “just get on with your life” instruction.

Alternatively, I can have whatever opinions I like without your permission being required. Yep, I might stick with that actually :)

Oh dear!

The anger…..

For a stranger on the internet!

I think it’s unlikely that DP will hear about this for years to come, it was as OP has confirmed a number of times, an irritation but not life changing or relationship changing, I think that it was just a peeve, escalated by PPs not being able to keep OT and understand the peeve was with the DP not booking the correct seats and not wether the picnic should’ve taken the form of a sandwich meal deal instead of a platter type meal., what individuals deemed as appropriate or not, what was hygienic or not, if OP was able to keep to her 50% if table etc. Wether she slurped, chomped, guzzled or just ate her lunch…

The “mini meltdown” was not pointless, I believe OP learnt about carriage C and was therefore able to head there and get the preferred seats (FOC), which is great.

Anyway alls well that ends well, OP got her seats, DP will hopefully be a bit more mindful in future. I’m not getting vibes that DP is being bullied or coerced in the relationship, so let’s not worry about him too much.

Enjoy the sunshine 🌞 today.

Is it just around food that you’d be fed up then? Or others enjoying themselves?

Pinic on a train, how strange all those other people having to put up with food smells, I thought no slchol was allowed to be drunk on a train.
Your hubby did the rest of the carriage a favour.

Did you not see the photo?
It looked like a M+S platter most likely sold at the station to be eaten on the train. That's it's purpose and that's why M+S have shops at stations - for people to buy food to eat on the train 😂
(alcohol rules vary between train companies)
I doubt most of the carriage even noticed.

LNER who OP is travelling with serve alcohol, so no worries there.

OP, also secured a table she wanted and got her picnic. All ended well.

YABU, nothing worse than being stuck next to the couple at the table having a picnic.

Ha! I have to agree.

Morgenrot25 · 09/07/2025 07:46

Got to say, I think that most folk would probably prefer dogs on the floor at owners feet. Bare arses on tables isn't exactly ideal. I don't think OP is taking a dog, but should any be travelling they may wish they were sitting next to all her 'smelly' meat.

Edited

Do people allow their dogs on the seats? AND THE TABLES?!

My dog is always at our feet, although she loves sticking her head out when the ticket person walks by because they usually rub her belly for a few minutes 😅. I'd never allow her on seats/tables and my dog is very much a well loved member of the family who is allowed on our sofas and beds.

SunflowersInRain · 13/07/2025 22:13

"without offending anyone".

Stay oblivious, OP. Doesn't bother me either way but I'm guessing there was some offended/annoyed people sitting next to you....

(Actually I say it doesn't bother me but when people are having a massive platter next to me then I'd worry about accidentally bumping/elbowing them which would be annoying).

At least you got what you wanted so you don't need to continue to have a tantrum 🙂.

It also looks a bit different from what OP described initially. 🫣

JMSA · 14/07/2025 07:26

I couldn’t get worked up over this. If it means so much then maybe you should book the tickets yourself next time.
Hope you have a lovely birthday.
