Tax increases imminent

1000 replies

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 04/07/2025 11:28

Heavy hints that taxes will rise in the next Budget after the recent climb down (as the ‘taxes won’t rise again’ was based on a 5 billion saving in benefits).

I can’t lie, I’m so pissed off about this. I don’t think anyone wants to see someone who is genuinely unable to work to be further penalised, but we all know there are thousands of people who could work but don’t.

this country is going to absolute shit . We pay more and more for less and less.

And means testing state pension just encourages fecklessness. Why strive and make provision for yourself when government will do it for you if you don’t ?

Doesn't pushing the state pension out to 70 do this? Or not being able to ever buy a house? or afford dc?

Where does this attitude that I shouldn't save for anything because X gets it free come from ? I don't actually know people who think like that.

bookdook · 04/07/2025 16:11

Having children is a choice. Disability is not.

That's not strictly true. Sometimes one's lifestyle makes you disabled.

bookdook · 04/07/2025 16:12

Should have stuck to the 1 billion WFA clawback and the PIP amendments to get the other 4 billion back.

I genuinely don't understand why so many were against some reforms.

Ask the politicians who pledged not to raise taxes ie Labour

Why would I believe a politician?

Well exactly. And yet many did and when Sunak said there’d be tax rises Labour on mn and media did the usual, when it was Labour lying.

It’s not my job to come up with ways for the Govt to save money, that’s the job that they were elected to do .

But you can’t just carp from the sidelines if you literally can’t come up with one single suggestion to save money. Not one.

I laugh when people say they'll leave the country and go where? As if the only people left will be those on PIP whilst all the lower, middle and upper earners will have swanned off to another country.

I also think we had 14 years of the Tories but yeah ok, one year of Labour and everything is their fault. People just like to moan on, no solutions just moaning and statements like people will leave🤦🏻‍♀️

Ok but good luck if you think you can keep taxing more.

bookdook · 04/07/2025 16:14

Seriously child benefit is what £100/month for one child and parents loose it when someone earns £80k. And the financial gymnastics of someone earning £4,800 to hold on to £100 is ridiculous. And is precisely the problem, no one is prepared to give an inch on what they believe they are entitled to, nor are they prepared to pay anymore to fund it. Stalemate.

I think the problem is higher earners fell they are getting less. Why shouldn't child benefit be universal? It is in many other countries and the equivalent used to be for my parents here.

Because it is hard when you are the one on the gravy train being reformed.

I think it was that the four point rule for PIP was going to take PIP away from large numbers of people. I think the vast majority of people know that the PIP system needs completely reforming but the proposed changes went too far. and were not properly consulted on. Changes will have to be made but they have just been kicked further down the road now.

bookdook · 04/07/2025 16:15

There would have been taxes or more cuts if the Tories had won. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But they are leaving, and in record-breaking droves. We are losing more millionaires than any other country in the world this year by quite some margin (more than double China, which is second on the list). Many are going to the UAE, some to Switzerland, Portugal or Greece, and some back to their home countries (eg the US or Canada).

Think all this just went over the heads of the rebel MPs.

The support for changes to PIP were largely from the general public who have little or no in depth idea of how the benefit is assessed, or the consequences of the cuts proposed. And that support was generally a knee jerk reaction to the rhetoric of the Tories and subsequently Labour who deliberately tried to muddy the waters between PIP and out of work benefits by conflating the two - you only have to look at this and other threads on MN to realise that most people have no idea of what PIP is for.

Disabled people know exactly what the consequences of the cut would have meant. Just because you remove support for a need doesn’t mean that need ceases to exist. And it wouldn’t have saved a penny. Loss of low to medium level support through PIP and the associated care allowance would have meant the majority of claimants affected turning to social care to meet that need - at significantly increased cost and cut in standard of care. The rebel MP’s were actually doing the job they’re paid to do for a change. They listened to their disabled constituents and voted accordingly. Isn’t that what we say we want ? Or is that just when it suits us ?

Penalise people who don’t pay child support leaving their families in need of state support.

Tackle tax avoidance in the building and allied trades.

And the vape shops, nail bars, barbers, street vendors and corner shops that have one till for card payments and one for cash…or similar dodges

Encourage entrepreneurship

We also have a high percentage of millionaires and let's not forget it isn't new. Brexit has made us less attractive

"Since 2014, the number of resident millionaires in the UK dropped by 9% compared with the W10’s global average growth of +40%."

I'm more concerned about young skilled workers leaving tbh.

Labour are doing the opposite for the last suggestion.

Who knows, you’ve got Labour now. Hold them accountable for their pledges and lies.

The rebel MP’s held them accountable. Labour made a clear pledge to disabled people not to change PIP or any other disability benefit until it had consulted with disabled people and their representative organisations, and that they would be included at every stage. Instead they had barely launched the consultation before they applied an arbitrary and damaging cut that would have affected the most significantly disabled, and while the publication of the consultation conclusions and recommendations was still more than a year away.

Lioncub2020 · 04/07/2025 16:22

I think there are lots of ways to do things different for example 20% of car sold are mobility cars. Why not just give the increase for the car once a job is confirmed. People without a job don't need a car.

Margot2020 · 04/07/2025 16:22

LillyPJ · 04/07/2025 16:00

To say your taxes are 60% is misleading, as you well know. We all get a tax-free personal allowance, then the first band at 20% etc. People earning enough to pay higher taxes can afford to pay more. They don't necessarily contribute more to society, have more responsibility or work harder than those on lower wages - many are just lucky that they ended up in well paid jobs.

I don’t get a tax-free personal allowance, haven’t for years. So you don’t seem to understand our taxation system, despite sounding so confident and correcting PP.

Well said. And it is ludicrous to think high earners don't offer to society. The British culture has just become woo is me, give me money....

I love this - it needs reforming to save money but not in a way where any current claimants suffer any reduction in payments. How exactly is that meant to work??

Utter nonsense, I work, don’t have a motability car. The majority of my car journeys are taking my DD to and from her specialist school when the school transport fails, taking her to multiple health appointments and attending various meetings relating to her support. There are no viable public transport options for her.
