Lily Allen ‘can’t remember’ how many abortions she’s had

Article in the Fail today about this.
I am pro choice but it did make me a bit uncomfortable. After a while a string of abortions - too many to remember - would surely leave its mark physically and emotionally not mention the cost on the NHS.
Everyone should have a choice but is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

Lily Allen is a bit feckless in how she lives .. you don't say... like she never seemed like that before to y'all? (I love her songs btw)

I'd rather she had feckless abortions then lots of children she looked after in a rather feckless way, so sounds like actual result is least of all bads.

If posters have a daughter who repeatedly had abortions because they didn’t use contraception would you not at some point suggest contraception?

You're assuming they told you.

If posters have a son who got someone pregnant, would you not suggest they use contraception at some point. See above sentence.

XenoBitch · 03/07/2025 22:19

1 abortion, or 100... does it matter? If there is a limit, then at some point you will be telling a woman that she needs to carry a pregnancy to term. So many things wrong with that. Pregnancy, childbirth and kids are not lesson to be taught to women who make choices that you don't like.

I agree with you OP. Think it’s wrong and even if not true, a wrong message to be sending out to younger girls / teens. People have no morals / shame or responsibility though these days.
Slightly different note but As a woman, I am appalled / sad about what I see recently on social media from other women. Some stuff on insta for example makes me feel very depressed.

I also agree.

Ignore the posters on here who seem to believe that abortion is an acceptable form of contraception OP. I find it quite obscene that she, and many posters on here, seem to think this is okay. If you don't want a baby then take precautions beforehand - simple as that (and yes, I do judge women who can't be bothered to).

Agrumpyknitter · 03/07/2025 22:24

What bothers me most is the amount of right wing American money coming over to this country so they can try and influence our right to choose what happens to our bodies. I point to the fact that an anti abortionist was honoured in the U.K. by Fiona Bruce under Liz Truss ill fated and short lived govt, the fact that a US anti abortion group have been protesting and campaigning in Glasgow earlier this year is much more worrying for us all.

The daily fail start laying the groundwork by posting these stories and then pretty soon the narrative is that they shouldn’t happen at all because the women who have them have ‘loose morals’ and that all women shouldn’t have access to abortions.

We actually don’t have the right to an abortion in this country it’s not enshrined in law as it should be. There are circumstances where its legal if two doctors agree and yes they do at the moment but it can be taken away, if there is the political will to do so.

PopeJoan2 · 03/07/2025 22:26

Despite her bravado she probably doesn’t remember because she blocked some of them out. Or she was perfectly comfortable with them that she couldn’t even remember, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Imagine someone is feckless. Then there was a genuine failure. Do they have to go through with #2? Then something happens like a rape (even within a relationship) or births defect. Is that ok or not?

The issue with this stance, and however any of us do/don’t judge the situation, is what is an acceptable number? How is that defined legally, morally?

crumblingschools · 03/07/2025 22:29

@ChatPDQ we have regular conversations with DS about contraception. I certainly wouldn’t be teaching him that abortion is a form of contraception

I think at the moment the majority of people are pro-choice but most people do still think of human life as being something that should be protected and preserved in most cases. If there is a constant narrative to say women should treat abortion lightly, that terminating up until birth is absolutely fine then there will be a backlash and we could see rights removed

Yes, we need to be realistic. The MN attitude of "if you don't agree with abortion up until birth, you're not pro-choice" isn't widely shared by society. MN is generally quite overzealous when it comes to abortion: I've seen at least three posters on here say it should be legal for a woman to kill a baby after birth. On a thread about Sally Clark, one of them said a mother or father shouldn't go to prison for killing a child until the age of three.

That is fucked up. Do people actually think this or are they sick trolls?

Yes, it was, actually. You seem like you're angry you're meeting with dissent on this thread and hitting back with 'edgy' gifs and irrelevant comments about cats. If anyone's been stooping to the juvenile on this thread it certainly ain't me.

Are you intentionally missing the posts where I have repeatedly stated that contraception is offered and strongly recommend to women who attend for abortion care? Contraception cannot be forcibly administered to women without consent.

crumblingschools · 04/07/2025 07:12

@TwinsTrollsAndHunz I mentioned it earlier too. And isn’t that the point, healthcare providers are trying to avoid the need for multiple abortions as it is not seen as ideal.

And if you are in short term relationships surely it is better to double up on contraception, so woman uses one sort and men use condoms not only to prevent pregnancies but also STIs

You are being disingenuous. You know perfectly well I was referring to people who are using abortion as a form of contraception. Those who have a genuine failure also have options. There are a few genuine reasons for abortion, the OP's example is not one of them.

Jennps · 04/07/2025 07:44

Can some tell me why there is much so much faux hate from people on here who love the daily mail. Especially those who go out of there way to call to daily fail. It’s a bit cringe. Are you 12?

C’mon you read it, you like it, you quote from it. Just own it. Why the shame and attempt to hide. It makes you look silly.

MinnieBaldock · 04/07/2025 07:58

You can have has many abortions you want just don't advertise it on a pod cast.
It's nothing to brag about.

Again, yes, prophylaxis is preferable but it is not foolproof and it is not always likely, or possible due to the barriers presented by a whole host of complex psychosocial factors also previously discussed at length.

Take LA as an example, as she is the original topic of the thread. Now that she is in a more stable and less vulnerable position psychologically following intensive MH treatment, she is able to manage her contraception needs and has LARC fitted. She is on her 'third or fourth coil' (her own words). When she was an extremely unwell young person, living a chaotic life that was not an option. Of course, theoretically it was available, but she was not in a mindset to avail herself of it.

Being young and a bit daft and not wanting or being able to raise a kid is a perfectly good reason for an abortion.

TalkToTheHand123 · 04/07/2025 09:52

No excuse for LA to find it funny.

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 04/07/2025 10:10

BlueJuniper94 · 03/07/2025 19:50

I'm not talking about LA here obviously... but just for the purposes of discussion here - how do you feel about say - 10 third trimester terminations?

10 third trimester terminations.

This is a vanishingly unlikely scenario but I'll play along.

Third trimester (28wk+) terminations are extremely rare and happen in extreme circumstances. They are done because they are medically necessary. 24wk+ terminations in England can only be signed off for lifesaving reasons or severe foetal anomalies incompatible with life, as per the Abortion Act 1967. This is true whether a woman requires 1, 10, or 20 24wk+ terminations.

If a woman had a 24wk+ TFMR after it was found that her pregnancy was not viable, the reasons would be investigated. If it was likely that she was going to have to have multiple third trimester TFMR, say she was a carrier for a rare, severe genetic condition, she would be referred to specialist support services for advice re recurrence risk amongst other things. With this support, it is highly unlikely that she would go on to have multiple pregnancies requiring TFMR.

Using proper contraception so you don’t get pregnant in the first place would be better though surely ? Even the morning after pill at a push.

You are commenting on a post about third trimester abortion. LA hasn't had a third trimester abortion.

Didn’t say she had. And my reply was appropriate to the post.

Rosscameasdoody · 04/07/2025 10:28

ghostyslovesheets · 03/07/2025 19:51

Gosh that’s not what the law says - thankfully

I mean what’s your acceptable limit? 3? 5? Over what period? 10 years?

so after, say 4 in 10 years what - no more abortion you have to have a child you don’t want

thankfully the law doesn’t care how many - just that you can access one legally and safely

Actually it’s not that simple. Two doctors have to agree that an abortion is the best option. There is no legal automatic right to an abortion and I think LA’s ‘confession’ and the giggly sing song way she went about it has only fuelled those who support the shit show around abortion in the USA and think the same thing should be happening here.
