Lily Allen ‘can’t remember’ how many abortions she’s had

Article in the Fail today about this.
I am pro choice but it did make me a bit uncomfortable. After a while a string of abortions - too many to remember - would surely leave its mark physically and emotionally not mention the cost on the NHS.
Everyone should have a choice but is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

What are moral issues then, are there any?

Not for me no - I’m 100 pro choice

Don’t be daft

I asked you if it would be morally wrong to commit neonatal infanticide. You responded that they're not comparable because one is illegal. Now we've agreed the legality of it is a red herring for the purposes of this discussion - maybe you can respond to the question: is it morally wrong to kill newborn babies?

Duh obviously but that’s not what abortion is

one is murdering a living autonomous being

the other is a living autonomous being choosing not to be pregnant

Iwillclasptheeagain · 03/07/2025 16:11

Lily Allen says edgy thing to draw attention to herself.

And the world turns.

KateMiskin · 03/07/2025 16:11

Shocking that on a women's site, posters are equating early term abortions to neo-natal infanticide.
😖

I think they think some clever trap is evolving 😂

The newborn baby vs in utero isn't the 'gotcha' you think it is, @BlueJuniper94

I think at the moment the majority of people are pro-choice but most people do still think of human life as being something that should be protected and preserved in most cases. If there is a constant narrative to say women should treat abortion lightly, that terminating up until birth is absolutely fine then there will be a backlash and we could see rights removed

Yes, we need to be realistic. The MN attitude of "if you don't agree with abortion up until birth, you're not pro-choice" isn't widely shared by society. MN is generally quite overzealous when it comes to abortion: I've seen at least three posters on here say it should be legal for a woman to kill a baby after birth. On a thread about Sally Clark, one of them said a mother or father shouldn't go to prison for killing a child until the age of three.

Bloody hell, that's dark. I'm pro-choice, but that's not on.

I thought it was bad enough when someone got into it with me on an MN thread once about why I didn't think it was OK to have unprotected sex on the basis of 'if I get pregnant there's always abortion', but that's actually shocked me, and I'm not that shockable.

Oops posted too soon. All the slagging off of the Daily Mail on Mumsnet is so tiresome. Lots of posters quote an article from it, then apologise, refer to it as Daily Fail, yawn. Just be up front about your reading material. So what if someone reads the Daily Mail, who cares, just stop apologising about it.

My thoughts exactly. Lily Allen quite literally said it. The daily mail along with other newspapers just reported on it. It's not like it's a blatant lie. Who gives a shit that the daily mail published it

Early term medical abortion is not killing babies.

We as a society use the term 'baby' very early in pregnancy all the time when the baby is wanted, and women who miscarry wanted pregnancies relatively early on often very much feel they've lost a baby. So either its a baby or it isn't.

Arraminta · 03/07/2025 16:18

I am very pro-choice. However, I am most definitely not pro-feckless irresponsibility.

I don't think she knows (or cares) what to say next in order to draw attention to herself. My best friend's neighbour was at Benenden with her and she was a tiresome, drama queen even back then.

Cloud987 · 03/07/2025 16:19

Not read the full thread but I made a thread about this yesterday OP. Made for some fruitful discussion.

Hope this link works

Calling something a baby doesn’t make it a baby

I call my cat baby but I’m not enrolling him reception this year

Anyway, AIBU to ask who Lily Allen even is? Genuinely? Not 100% sure I can even work up the energy to google.
But yes, its grim.

We as a society use the term 'baby' very early in pregnancy all the time when the baby is wanted, and women who miscarry wanted pregnancies relatively early on often very much feel they've lost a baby. So either its a baby or it isn't.

We also use the terms zygote and foetus to describe various stages of development, because it's not true, at all, that something either is or isn't a baby.

At the very early stages, a collection of cells which just has the potential to become a baby is very much not a baby, and abortion is very much not killing.

fount · 03/07/2025 16:23

I agree she's put this out there in an attempt to gain attention. I don't agree with using abortion as a form of contraception, mostly on moral grounds, but also because it's stupid. Why put your body through that if you can usually prevent it by taking a simple precautionary measure?

I don't describe myself as pro-choice, but I think it's ridiculous to say that a person can't be both generally in favour of giving women the option yet also able to see shades of grey on the issue, such as putting time limits into place, or as in this case, recognising that there's something sick about allowing yourself to become pregnant repeatedly when you know you don't want to have a baby.

On what planet would you think something like this is reasonable to have an AIBU natter about it.

you didn’t need to mention her name.

This is someone’s life.

Edited

She and Miquita Oliver discuss it in depth on their podcast. They are incredibly dismissive about it and Miquita claims she also had 5 abortions.

ghostyslovesheets · 03/07/2025 16:27

Pre cancerous cells on your cervix have the potential to be cancer but they aren’t cancer

zygotes have the potential to be born and become babies but they aren’t babies

Sigh. There's really not much worth saying to someone childish enough to invoke their relationship with their cat in a discussion on abortion (tangent you call it 'baby'????? OK??)
