Lily Allen ‘can’t remember’ how many abortions she’s had

Article in the Fail today about this.
I am pro choice but it did make me a bit uncomfortable. After a while a string of abortions - too many to remember - would surely leave its mark physically and emotionally not mention the cost on the NHS.
Everyone should have a choice but is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

OP posts:

There was a thread about Lilly Allen’s abortion interview in the feminism section of MN last night. It’s still going and no one was remotely pissed off about the OP starting the thread. AIBU is wild. What’s the problem.

OP, there are some twats on this thread. A great topic for discussion, whatever side of the fence you sit in the subject, and some interesting responses. Take a look at the other thread and maybe contribute your thoughts there.

why read the daily mail for your news?

you do you

not my business

Yet here you are judging someone for reading the daily mail. Whether the op reads the daily mail or not is also not your business. Do as you say, you do you.

AmusedTaupePlayer · 03/07/2025 10:56

How does she not suffer from side effects?

Calling people twats doesn't make your view any more valid than those you disagree with.
Again, how are LA's abortions affecting you?

I wonder what some of these posters are like in person? I wonder if they really are the aggressive little twats that they portray themselves to be on here.

HairsprayBabe · 03/07/2025 10:57

What side effects? Abortions are very safe and carry very little risk, more risk than not getting pregnant in the first place, be significantly less risk than actually having a baby,

Beeloux · 03/07/2025 10:58

HairsprayBabe · 03/07/2025 10:48

@Beeloux I'll do the maths for you.

In the UK, about half of women seeking abortions report that their contraception method failed, according to the BPAS. This means that nearly half of women undergoing abortions in the UK were using contraception at the time they became pregnant. Specifically, a study of women having abortions at BPAS clinics found that over half (51.2%) were using some form of contraception.

When that is broken down 17% comes from the pill, 38% condoms, 2% IUD, 1% implant 3% cap/diaphragm, 2% hormone injection, 1% sterilisation/vasectomy, 1% natural family planning, 1% MAP - the remaining ~% declined to answer.

251,377 is the total number of abortions in the UK in 2022 - that means approximately 12,568 women in the UK had an abortion that year whilst on long term birth control. (injection/iud/implant)

It simply isn't that rare and shocking that it could happen to people multiple times

Out of the 12,568 woman, I wonder how many times that happened on more than one occasion? Very low I imagine. Personally I have only ever fell pregnant when a man finishes inside me, hence why I no longer would allow them to despite being on the implant. If I fell pregnant on the implant I would be doubling up or using a barrier method

Of course it may still happen but the liklehood of someone like LA using abortions as birth control is much more common than a woman falling pregnant on multiple occasions while using the implant or coil.

Um I’ve got no idea about LA abortions, you’ve got the wrong person for that. I’ve never mentioned them and have no idea what you’re talking about.

She quite possibly did have short term side effects during/shortly after the process. Early (chemical) abortions are relatively safe, in the grand scheme of things, so what are you referring to?

In this case it appears to be bitching and judgement of something that doesn't affect her.

Almost nothing anybody writes on MN affects any of the other posters yet you all bother to type responses. It’s like you are all policing the content with your bitchy responses.

She is opening a conversation…. That’s the whole point of a forum.

of abortions

Yes, but what specific side effects are you referring to?
How do you know she didn't experience some of the normal short term side effects?

It's not a joke subject. Those two should be ashamed of themselves.

...but what is she hoping to achieve with the conversation? Everyone is entitled to their own views on abortion, however starting a judgemental thread specifically on the actions of one person is essentially inviting folk to join in criticising her.

Literally none of your business what Lily Allen or any other woman does with their body or fertility.

Lily Allen made it the public’s business by mouthing off about it. If she had kept it to herself, then yes it would have been just her personal business.

AlligatorTears · 03/07/2025 11:07

Hmmm. Only read the first page and don’t bother posting usually this far deep into a thread but my only real thought on this is that it’s incredibly irresponsible to get yourself pregnant when you don’t want to be ‘4 or 5 times’.

i don’t care who she is or what she does with her body but I do think she needs help.

as someone who HAS had a termination, I was left scarred (mentally) and can’t really talk about it. I am traumatised I had to go through it. I ‘did everything right’ - used protection (which failed) and bought the MAP OTC (which failed) and was left with no choice than to terminate or continue a very unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. I am angry I had to make that choice, that everything failed and left me in that position.

I was scared of sex for a good 10 years afterwards (because I was worried about an unplanned pregnancy); this affected my relationship of course and it’s only resolved now I am unable to have more children.

I cannot imagine having a termination more than once. I can’t imagine being in a position where you need to do it more than once.

I don’t believe contraception fails ‘4 or 5 times’. If so, use something else!

It's still not your place to judge her decisions regarding her body.

personally i don’t judge her decisions to have abortions. I do judge her getting pregnant that many times though when she didn’t want to be!
