The sooner Rayner is properly in play, the better.

She will crystallise this psychodrama quickly, and we can then properly plan for a post-socialist experiment (which clearly, does not work).

That will be fascinating.

Soulfulunfurling · 02/07/2025 13:47

The markets appear to be concerned about who is going to be replace her….

TwoFeralKids · 02/07/2025 13:47

Lets hope when you are overwhelmed with things at work you might get more sympathy than many on here are displaying.

"May she not rest in peace". What the fuck did I read here?

MyNameIsX · 02/07/2025 13:47

NotTerfNorCis · 02/07/2025 13:32

Poor woman. The stress got to her. No one would cry in public unless they absolutely couldn't help it.

Promoted way above her abilities.

Same for the entire cabinet, mind you.

I was at risk of having my PIP taking away. I don’t hold Rachel Reeves solely responsible for that. Liz Kendall is the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, she could have chosen any other part of the welfare system to reform, instead of PIP, but she didn’t.

I don’t disagree with cuts to Winter Fuel Allowance either, it was just the threshold that was too low, now imo it’s too high. We need to get away from this notion that pensioners are all poor because they’re absolutely not.

So you think some pensioners should have the WFA taken away but can’t see why others may think some (not all) people should have their PIP taken away? Why should someone on 80k a year get £700 a month PIP when there are people using foodbanks? Can’t you see that reform of PIP is needed?

Goldenbear · 02/07/2025 13:47

nomoreredtape · 02/07/2025 12:52

Yes, definitely crying. I just searched PMQs, Rachel Reeves crying’ on YouTube and it popped up.

Being in a very male dominated field, it’s about the worst thing a woman can do at work.

Is it, I work in an office in an all male team and have cried once, it is forgotten about and they were fine about it.

Araminta1003 · 02/07/2025 13:47

I also feel for her, but I think she is out of her depth I am afraid. It is one of the most important jobs and huge pressure and impacts everyone’s lives. I hope they find someone better to do it. Sunak was the last good Chancellor (not a Tory by the way!)

AnotherBrickIn · 02/07/2025 12:42

It was uncomfortable to watch, yes she’d fucked up but I feel for her. Let’s be honest she doesn’t really make these decisions on her own does she

No she doesn't. But it would take a real man, a man of honour and courage, to step up and show visible support. Did you see any on the front bench?

littleblueenvelope · 02/07/2025 13:47

@Another76543if you can afford private school, you are one of the privileged few! It’s like those people that plead poverty but don’t want to touch their savings!!!!

wrackmybrain · 02/07/2025 13:47

EasternStandard · 02/07/2025 12:55

Her mh is likely in pieces. She’ll be too stressed to
function.

In which case she should never have gone into politics.

Citing ‘mental health’ is becoming tedious. Seriously, if she was not strong enough mentally to take all the shit that politicians get thrown at them she really should not have gone into it.

it’s not exactly a surprise that the media have been jumping on her (and the others) - it’s been happening as long as I can remember (I’m in my 60s)

Extravirginolive · 02/07/2025 13:48

MyNameIsX · 02/07/2025 13:41

But you are OK not to see pensioners, small business owners, and welfare claimants suffer breakdowns, correct?

It's really quite hard to work out if that's a question or what it is asking, or if it's just a badly worded sneer.

NeedyOpalSquid · 02/07/2025 13:48

I see the reform spam bots are out in force today.

safetyfreak · 02/07/2025 13:48

I feel for her,

The welfare budget (including pension triple lock) is completely out of control and needs sorting. However, any plans to cut welfare has been met with complete outrage. This will fuck us all if its not sorted but, no one wants to sort it or have the hard conversations.

I think it’s a real threat though. No one looks like that and is fit to continue. She looked spent.

SENNeeds2 · 02/07/2025 13:49

If she's crying for personal reasons then as a human being she has my compassion.

But if she is crying for reasons related to her job - no I don't feel sorry for her - she's made her choices and she has to deal with the consequences. I think she is deplorable.

I do think thought, that the labour government has done what lots of governments do - put women into roles in difficult periods knowing that at some point they will be blamed for a load of things and outsted out - and then the men they really wanted to get into the position will get put in in a better political climate.

Who exactly? Can you say which post

littleblueenvelope · 02/07/2025 13:49

Why is someone crying shown to be out of her depth? She might be pre menstrual/going through menopause! Fuck, she looked exhausted! She has kids and a family! Crying isn’t a bad thing! She’s probably like, fuck this shit I’m damned if I do and I’m damned if I don’t! Which is 100% true! She could do everything the right-wing press wanted and the left would want a pound of flesh and Vica versa! Wish Farage got some of this outrage and negative press attention!

MyNameIsX · 02/07/2025 13:50

NoMoreStupidGuys · 02/07/2025 13:38

Be Kind? FGS.

Would you like us to remind you of some of the rhetoric from Labour since entering power?

Much of it was distinctly lacking in kindness. Quite the opposite, in fact. It was personal and vicious.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/07/2025 13:50

PersephoneSeethes · 02/07/2025 13:08

Sorry, but the most Government finances round the world have been utterly dire since 2008 - here in the UK, that was a Labour government.

Global financial crisis in 2008. Yes, Labour were in power then, but the crisis wasn't of their making. The coalition government (Tories propped up by LibDems) made the catastrophic mistake of imposing austerity from 2010 onwards. We've never recovered. Cutting public services to the bone was never going to end well. Then we have the self-inflicted wound of Brexit, rapidly followed by Covid.

Another76543 · 02/07/2025 13:50

TwoFeralKids · 02/07/2025 13:43

Aww diddums to the private schools closing. We don't want to mix with the plebs do we?

That’s precisely the attitude that has meant people are struggling to find sympathy. I totally understand that people have different beliefs, and I understand why some might not agree with private education. However, whatever your political views are, relishing in happy children being disrupted is really quite unpleasant. It’s this smug, spiteful attitude that many of us find hard to relate to.

The only question now is whether Starmer will survive this.

He will if he gets rid of Reeves with the next 48 hours otherwise the simmering tensions will continue to destroy his leadership. He's now stuck between a rock and a hard place - good job he's not afraid to take the tough decisions. 😂

TwoFeralKids · 02/07/2025 13:50

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/07/2025 13:22

Guardian says
A spokesperson for Reeves said: “It’s a personal matter, which – as you would expect – we are not going to get into. The chancellor will be working out of Downing Street this afternoon.”

So maybe a bereavement or something?

littleblueenvelope · 02/07/2025 13:50

@safetyfreakexactly!!! Totally agree!
