Starmer will be gone by this time next year.

This government is imploding right before our eyes, despite a huge (but shallow) majority. People didn’t vote for Labour, as much as they voted against the diabolical Tories in the last election.

Coupled with that, the calibre of MPs in general, but especially the new Labour MPs is shockingly low. These are people who have never had real jobs, and found themselves accidentally in charge of the country. Most them would struggle to use a calculator, let alone understand how the economy works.

Bond markets are already punishing ‘Rachel from accounts’. Cue the insults about misogyny despite the fact that calling her from accounts is an insult to those who actually work in accounts. Gilts are already above when Truss was in charge, meaning the situation is worse. Crazy tax hikes are on the way. Top rate taxpayers are leaving the country in droves.

Boat crossings are at a record high. Unemployment is up, inflation is on the increase. The country is at very real risk of recession.

If Starmer falls, his replacement candidates are terrifying. It’s possible the government could fall within 2 years or so. The chances of Reform getting into power will increase many fold if there is a snap election in that timeframe.

Wonder if the economically illiterate, constantly wanting to constantly shake the magic money tree, are ready for Reform.

There are.

Obviously not everyone commenting on everything is a troll, but it’s very hard to know which is which sometimes, and there are enough trolls to have a profound effect on the views of others.

The “everyone hates Labour” myth is self perpetuating unfortunately- the trolls and bots start posting and commenting and others thing that’s the “correct” point of view to take, and jump on.

Obviously not everyone hates Labour on mn. It’s still quite pro Labour / Starmer generally.

It is out of step with polls though, and Labour supporters seeing trolls at every non Labour post is on nearly every thread.

DryDay · 02/07/2025 17:06

Praying KS can hang on. AR would be an embarrassment.

I like Wes Streeting - I believe he has a good heart - but he’s not got any real economic experience in the commercial/ corporate world. He’s from a student politics background - woefully unworldly.

I’m a working person paying a lot of tax. I don’t feel “nailed down” by tax. I feel nailed down by what Kwarteng and Truss did to interest rates!

Good for you. I don't aim to persuade anyone as to how to vote. I'm just saying Labour does not represent the majority of people like me (as shown in the polls).

There is no way Raynor would get as far as being PM.

Many people said there was no way Trump would be president.

Quirkswork · 02/07/2025 17:14

Nickisli1 · 02/07/2025 17:01

You say that but you genuinely have no idea of tge alternatives because Farage and reform have not published policies (its all rhetorical arguments about 'broken britain') and neither have Badenock and tories. You are making an assumption that there is a better alternative

I wouldn't vote for any left of centre party. Labour don't represent the interests of working people and the Lib Dems don't know what a woman is. So it will definitely be either Conservative or Reform.

Ilovemyshed · 02/07/2025 17:15

NeelyOHara · 02/07/2025 06:39

If Kier goes we will get Angela Raynor, then we are completely fucked. I think Kier is by far the better option.

Actually, only as a caretaker until a Labour leadership election took place.

Bridport · 02/07/2025 17:16

"you’re all panicking over the outcome of the next General Election."

I genuinely don't think anyone is 'panicking' over an event that's not due to happen for 4 years. There's more going on right now in the wider world to worry about.

It's also fair to say that Farage and other Reform MPs have 4 years left to prove what they can do in their roles. I remain interested to see what value they add for the people who voted for them.

Lots of time for it all to shake down.

It would be good to have some sort of viable alternative to Conservative and Labour that's for sure.

NellieJean · 02/07/2025 17:21

We get the government we deserve. Every Prime Minister is characterised as useless by people like the OP. Everybody wants more spending, less tax, more rights, less responsibility. On here we have lots of threads about how people can’t bear to go into the office, am I entitled to more holiday, I’ve got a grievance etc. This isn’t a serious country and we better get used to the consequences.

Bridport · 02/07/2025 17:21

Reform don't seem to be achieving much in their constituencies though and there seems to be a lot of infighting and power struggles. Farage did nothing when he was an MEP to instill confidence either. Based on performance to date they're not exactly looking like that alternative.

Great. That's a disaster given that both Conservative and Labour have failed the country so badly.

That's a bit excitable.
Only certain parts of the population think Labour have failed the country. Many others are more balanced and patient and don't expect immediate miracles. Still it's immaterial. The country voted them in preference to all the alternatives and now they are in power until 2029.

Well, looking at the.polls it's not looking like the majority of the population think Labour are doing a good job, that Keir is doing a good job or that they will be voting for Labour at all!

Obviously as you have already said though, four years is a decent amount of time for things to change. Look at Labour after 2019 election when everyone was saying it was finished. Conservatives are now the ones being written off. I hope they aren't for the sake of the country.

Hang on. Are you saying that posts on mumsnet have a "profound effect on the views of others "? By "others" do you mean gullible people that can't spot a troll. Not like wily people like you obviously.

I seriously doubt it.

Can you show which post you mean, give an example

Fringle · 02/07/2025 17:45

Oh god. Why is left-wing opinion on MN supposed to be genuine but other opinion must come from a Siberian bot farm?

TBH I find the incessant support of Labour far more suspicious of orchestration than the opposing comment.

Just to be clear, I think Reform are a bunch of angry shopkeepers, cabbies, beer-bellied football fans and closet racists. Because they have no class or intellect they should be nowhere near power. That should be left to the Tories.

Seymour5 · 02/07/2025 17:48

Boilingfrogatprimaryschool · 02/07/2025 12:05

It's not the case. If that is the case why have Westminster just announced they will be doing this?

Apologies. Most councils have always offered secure tenancies, after an introductory period. Westminster is returning to that model, because their flexible tenancies didn’t free up properties as they’d hoped.

Okay, and 20 years ago I would have agreed the Tories were a clever political party. But now? Haven’t they lost a lot of the talent they had?

Bridport · 02/07/2025 17:54

I'm absolutely not defending Reform but blimey @Fringle, if you don't like Reform you're going to hate the Conservatives.

Beer-bellied football fans - Boris Johnson
and closet racists - "The Conservative Party's first Muslim chairperson has said it is now known as "the institutionally xenophobic and racist party", not "the nasty party".

So true re Labour thinking only their posts are genuine. It just shows how much the site has been Labour.

Bridport · 02/07/2025 18:03

The thing is people make connections and constant repetition of phrases like Two Tier Keir and Rachel from Accounts really does make it seem like there's a hymn sheet. I've just read the comments on the DM story about Rachel Reeves today and the same phrases come out time and again.

Do people who don't rate Labour really talk in this kind of code? Or is someone trotting out catchy phrases?

I really think you should change your schtick. Not everyone who doesn’t want a Tory or Reform government is a Labour voter.

Labour posters do the same with other politicians and lines though. Maybe you don’t notice as it’s who you vote for.
