Starmer will be gone by this time next year.

This government is imploding right before our eyes, despite a huge (but shallow) majority. People didn’t vote for Labour, as much as they voted against the diabolical Tories in the last election.

Coupled with that, the calibre of MPs in general, but especially the new Labour MPs is shockingly low. These are people who have never had real jobs, and found themselves accidentally in charge of the country. Most them would struggle to use a calculator, let alone understand how the economy works.

Bond markets are already punishing ‘Rachel from accounts’. Cue the insults about misogyny despite the fact that calling her from accounts is an insult to those who actually work in accounts. Gilts are already above when Truss was in charge, meaning the situation is worse. Crazy tax hikes are on the way. Top rate taxpayers are leaving the country in droves.

Boat crossings are at a record high. Unemployment is up, inflation is on the increase. The country is at very real risk of recession.

If Starmer falls, his replacement candidates are terrifying. It’s possible the government could fall within 2 years or so. The chances of Reform getting into power will increase many fold if there is a snap election in that timeframe.

Wonder if the economically illiterate, constantly wanting to constantly shake the magic money tree, are ready for Reform.

@Fringle
Im sorry if it feels that way to you personally…I’m not sure I would say I’m “happy” with some decisions that have been made but I would definitely say I’m more optimistic than I’ve felt in a while. If it’s causing you or others anxiety then obviously that’s not a good thing but there are some good leading indicators for a positive outlook.

UK GDP grew by 0.7% in Q1 2025 - the fastest rate in over a year and the strongest in the G7.
Wages are now rising faster than inflation, with average pay up 5.2% year-on-year and inflation down to 3.4%.
Retail sales volumes are up 1.7% compared to last year, and debit card spending has increased by 13%.
Business investment rose by 6% in the first quarter, especially in sectors like manufacturing and transport.
Bank lending to businesses is forecast to grow by 3.1% this year, after a period of stagnation.
Consumer confidence is improving, with GfK’s index rising from –22 to –18.
Business optimism is growing in 11 out of 12 UK regions, according to Lloyds' barometer.
Private sector activity has returned to expansion territory at 50.3.
The Bank of England has already cut interest rates once and is expected to cut further in the second half of 2025.
Household debt has fallen to 118% of disposable income, its lowest level since 2007.
Savings remain steady, with the household saving ratio at around 10–12%, providing a buffer for spending.
Inflation in food and energy has eased significantly, helping to stabilise prices and improve household budgets.
And I thought the Spending Review was well thought out at least with some unexpectedly big Capital Spending.
Time will tell if this leads to a positive trend

“…the economy is gradually recovering.”

Outstanding satire. 👏

A bit like you saying No UK government I’m aware of has ever “robbed the coffers” for personal gain.

He's never improved life for anyone except himself and his rich cronies. Given his lies about Brexit I'd like to see him charged with treason and imprisoned.

Quite.

ForWittyTealOP · 02/07/2025 12:43

So was it me who made the allegations you took exception to? Am I supposed to scour the board to see if anyone's ever had the same opinion so I can avoid upsetting you by repeating it?

In any case, if you really can't identify the shill and bot posts on here, if you think every post is completely genuine and typed by human hand, I've got news for you.

I can’t remember who made the ‘allegations’!

Anyway you are right. I am not clever enough to identify every single bot and shill correctly here, unlike you. I feel the same irritation when I see the ‘hello Rishi/Keir, is that you?’ type comments here. Yawn.

I have three words for you. Dame Shirley Porter. You probably don’t remember - too young, I guess.

Nope. Not too young at all. But also not so old that I thought you were sending me a delivery address!
This thread is about the here and now. What is happening today under a Labour government.

I really don't want to talk about Porter when discussing housing any more than I want to mention Bulter when talking about schools or Bevan and the NHS (and yes, I am way too young to remember them). That our elected representatives don't know their history makes it inevitable they will repeat it.
My point stands. Currently Westminster do not offer life long tenancies. Under a Labour triad this is now about to become policy.

doodoodahdah · 02/07/2025 13:43

YAB a massive bore OP and obviously have a very short memory with what the Tories put us through, the vile personalities of their MPs and just all-round shite-ness

Grammarnut · 02/07/2025 13:45

BIossomtoes · 02/07/2025 13:01

I hope if we do people will finally learn to spell her name. It must drive her mad.

Sigh, I should have checked! Thanks. It's Rayner. Having lived with 3 surnames I have had to spell I feel her pain.

Inthebleakmidwinter1 · 02/07/2025 13:54

Least worst option in my opinion. It’s a really tough time to govern and I honestly can’t see any of the parties doing a better job. No one has a compelling vision for a way out of this mess so I’ll take mediocre over batshit Trumpian style craziness any day of the week. People who think this is bad do you honestly think this is as bad as it can get?

Jennps · 02/07/2025 14:01

So Rayner has orchestrated a coup by winding up backbenchers to get them to vote against Two Tier and Reeves. She probably offered the morons jobs in a future government to complete the circus.

Two Tier is making moves to fire Reeves and she is sitting in PMQs today crying.

This, ladies and gentleman, is the shower of shite that is supposed to be running the country at a time of perilous economic crisis.

Until 2013 (with a Tory government and mayor) Westminster Council operated a policy of lifetime tenancies. They changed their policy to flexible tenancies. This hasn’t worked so they’re reverting to the original policy they had when both the government and mayoralty were Tory.

And of course you don’t want to talk about Porter. It was highly inconvenient of me to have mentioned her.

She voted in favour of the Bill, didn't she? What proof do you have that she orchestrated the rebellion?

HotColdFlame · 02/07/2025 14:21

All the parties are utterly shite, and this comes from a lifelong Labour voter. I do NOT want reform in, they will be an utter disaster for the nhs and welfare, but I'm horrifyingly, coming around to the idea that maybe that's what we need. Perhaps it's the only option - let them do a term and hopefully shake the others into assembling parties with policies that the people actually want.

Kelticgold · 02/07/2025 14:24

Sabire9 · 02/07/2025 10:31

'The sheer numbers of low skilled migrants arriving'.

Irregular immigration only made up a small percentage of the total number of immigrants last years.

Everyone else has been invited here to work with a visa, and will be paying through the nose for that. Far and away the biggest proportion of immigrants classed as 'low skilled' workers who are coming with a visa are care workers, who've been given a visa to work in the care sector.

Yes, those low skilled care workers, the ones most mumsnetters want to keep sponsoring into the country, since they won’t take care of their ageing parents (as seen in other threads)

Until 2013 if the important bit. I'm bored of this now so fire way at will.

Quirkswork · 02/07/2025 14:32

While I hope Rachel Reeves is OK (if it is a personal issue) I'm not sure it's a great look crying in Parliament. Doesn't fill everyone with confidence 😬

Tangfastic71 · 02/07/2025 14:35

@Quirkswork
Yes me too…hope the personal issue isn’t anything serious. I think it would look bad if she were crying in parliament, but letting a tear or two escape obviously not as bad.

Really bad timing though. I have to say, despite not being a Labour supporter, I really felt for her. How awful to have to try not to cry when the cameras are aiming straight at you.

bombastix · 02/07/2025 14:42

well she’s been given the kicking of a lifetime by her own party, what can you expect?

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 02/07/2025 14:42

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/ckg33njxve0t

Multiple colleagues and allies of Rachel Reeves in Parliament are blaming an altercation with the Speaker of the Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, for her tearful appearance in the House of Commons.
Several have accused him of having been abrupt with the chancellor in a meeting before Prime Minister's Questions.
It is thought to have been about an interaction they had during Treasury questions yesterday in which Hoyle asked her to give shorter answers.
However no-one who the BBC has spoken to is claiming to have witnessed the interaction personally. The chancellor's team has declined to comment.

I suppose it doen't preclude a personal issue on top of what ever's going on - but why the briefing against the speaker by allies?

Starmer backs Chancellor Rachel Reeves after tearful appearance at PMQs

A spokesperson for Reeves says it was a "personal matter" - meanwhile, the PM declines to rule out tax rises when pressed by Kemi Badenoch.

Tangfastic71 · 02/07/2025 14:44

@Quirkswork
Indeed…I know that I would be mortified! I’ve cried in front of my boss in the past (bloody menopause) and it floored my confidence. But she’s human. Better that than someone with no emotions or feelings.

HotColdFlame · 02/07/2025 14:46

Kelticgold · 02/07/2025 14:24

You must mix in very different circles than I do. Where I am, people can't get a ' low skilled' care job because it's easier and cheaper to recruit from abroad, rather than investing in training UK citizens to work in this field. It's another lazy trope put out there that people are turning down this work because they ' don't want to': reality is, they can't get their foot in the door in the first place!

TiswasPhantomFlanFlinger · 02/07/2025 14:58

Considering we have had 2 heatwaves already during June, we have to take notice of our climate and Ed Miliband isn’t wrong to be moving us away from fossil fuels.
Labour are a better bet than any other party for this country. Reform being the worst bet by a million miles.
This OP is probably a Farage bot winding us all up.

It’s embarrassing that even now that is their only intellectual answer. Howling usually incorrectly that the poster is a bot. Of late it’s now ‘reform’ bot added for variety.
