was laying bed when i heard my dog barking at the front of the house. when she should be safely locked up in the back yard. went to look out the back window and the back gate was wide open dog no where to be seen!

the back gate is usually locked, i dont know why it wasnt last night but i cant even remember who opened it last so cant blame anyone for that.

cue me getting up immediatley and searching streets for dog. luckily she had come back of her own accord and was waiting at the back gate while i was looking round the front for her !

dp thinks that this is forgivable as who ever let her out probably did because they were sick of her barking. i think that if this is the casae they should have to come to me to complain and not just let my family out!

the dog does bark but only when she hears noises. although this noise can be just a car and usually is. on a weekend her barking is worse because she can hear people coming home in taxis and drunks walking past.

but if she is barking for more than a couple of minutes at a time i will go and see what she is barking at which stops her.

we live oppposite a bus depo and two very busy roads so there is every chance that the dog could have been run over, she is a terrier so it is her nature to hunt and kill, she could very easily have gotten hold of some ones pet bunny, guniea pig, chickens, kitten (she is scared of cats i have two and the bully her but could easily kill a kitten), for all who ever let out knows she could be a biting dog and could have got hold of a child, also who ever did do it must live in my street as we have alley gates so they would also know that i have a four year old dd who would be gutted if her dog was hurt.

am absolutely livid that some one would be so inconsiderate dp still seems to think this acceptable (but admits it is wrong he is just not annoyed by it) as the dog could have woke them up

Why does your dog bark in the night? Why does it bark at cars? Lots of dogs don't. What's the matter with it? What's the matter with you?

micci25 · 25/05/2008 12:43

and yes i am listening to the more helpfull posts i will try freckles tips on tiolet training and a crate wont help as she does foul where she sleeps, she sleeps in her kennel and pees in there too.

i will also be taking her to the vets as i didnt realise this could be medical problem!

OP posts:
nkf · 25/05/2008 12:45

She sounds like a revolting animal. Why don't you get rid of her?

WanderingTrolley · 25/05/2008 12:48

nkf that is no way to refer to a child

lol at only listening to the 'helpful' posts

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 25/05/2008 12:50

You sound like a neighbour from hell.

You say your dog barks constantly in the day and you wonder if your neighbours are botheres You're insane.

I take back what I said earlier [dons hard hat]- I do feel sorry for the dog it isn't its fault. I don't think I'd have let it out - I'd have put it in my car and taken it to a rescue about 100 miles away and said I found it wondering the streets. If I wasn't an animal lover I'd have shot it.

lulumama · 25/05/2008 12:51

i am just so surprised that you are surprised that a barking dog is annoying to people in the vicinity. even just once or twice a week ....

micci25 · 25/05/2008 12:51

because my dd1 loves her and it would break her heart nfk. and also she is lovely with the children and i got her to alert me to noises in the night and was advised to do by the police after my house was broken into.

obv i did not want her to alert me to the fact that buses were driving past, but i did not live here when i got here i lived close to where we are moving and i didnt have a problem with her barking at night time then, i had a problem with her barking through the day at the kids outside but that was easily solved by closing the curtains.

i dont think that she thinks she is the alpha dog as she is afraid of the cats they are most definately boss!

Haven't read all the posts but:

i have said that i will get her a cage and keep her inside if she is causing a problem for the neighbours! i have said that i am going to get dp to ask them first because i would rather have in her v large yard than a cage overnight! but i dont want her peeing all over my kitchen!

Bloody hell woman it is so very obvious from your posts and whats happened that she IS causing a problem so deal with it.

Sorry but no responsible owner would leave their dog out at night if it barked at all !!!! Doesn't matter if its only a few times a week and for a few minutes, no one should have to put up with a barking dog in the middle of the night!

I have 2 dogs who also bark at people waling past the back gate but I wouldn't let them bark like this even in the day

So what if she pees on you kicthen floor! Clean it up or get a dog crate or take her to the vets or train her properly. Sorry but there are loads of things you can do but you choose to put her out at night and let her bark

lulumama · 25/05/2008 12:52

i thikn a burglar alarm would have been a better idea.

you got a dog to specifically bark at noises.. and wonder why your neighbours are ticked off?

i don;t thikn you thought this through

Tonightsthenight · 25/05/2008 12:55

I don't know if you've mentioned how old she was when you got her. Have you had her since she was a puppy? Not toilet training a dog for 3 years seems really strange to me. Really strange.

micci25 · 25/05/2008 12:55

i couldnt put an alarm in as it was a rented house! i did get alarms for the windows and doors and as i said i did not live here when i got her, i lived in a much quiter area.

i will be doing something about her training and her barking and i stop her when i hear her.

I think if I was your neighbour I'd be calling Environmental Services about the noise pollution. I love dogs, but I'd be mightly annoyed if my neighbour left their dog out all night and I had to listen to it barking.

LilRedWG · 25/05/2008 12:56

Yale do wireless alarms, we have one, it's great.

micci25 · 25/05/2008 12:57

yes she was a puppy and yes she was toilet trained but hasnt 'got' that she needs to hold it when there is no one there to let her out or how to properly alert you to when she wants be out she will just sit at the door wagging her tail and if you dont see her she cant always wait.

she does know where she is meant to go and does try to go out when she can.

OP posts:
WanderingTrolley · 25/05/2008 12:58

obv i did not want her to alert me to the fact that buses were driving past

roffle

Handy though, if you want to catch a bus. Maybe the bus depot could employ her?

lulumama · 25/05/2008 12:58

do you have a dog flap for her to go in and out?

It doesnt take 3 years of having problems with a dog to realise that you have to do something about it. Training classes are not a one off and you dont give up on training because your dog was aggressive there - you actually increase the professional help.

So as I said this is a wind up or you need to take the dog to a rescue place.

micci25 · 25/05/2008 13:00

no, lulu as this is still not my house so i cannot make changes like that to it! but there is one installed where we are moving to as that is my house!

am off for lunch soon but will let you all know how it goes with the nieghbours later on.

OP posts:
hercules1 · 25/05/2008 13:00

She hasnt got it either because there is a medical issue or you havent trained her properly. Surely it doesnt take 3 years and posters on an internet forum for you to realise this.

I wouldnt bother with the neighbours tbh. Even if they say there are no problems from what you've posted here there are lots of issues you need to deal with starting now.

LilRedWG · 25/05/2008 13:01

I am really hoping this is a wind up, because if not, that poor dog needs rehoming.

micci25 · 25/05/2008 13:01

and yes i pick up her mess when i am walking, i always have a hand bag full of nappy sacks just incase!

and i do try and stop her barking through the day by letting her in/out depending upon what she is barking at

Comes back to "Civilised people don't wait for people to ask them to behave in a civilised manner. That's why your neighbours haven't complained."

We have a new neighbour who allows her dog to bark at 6.30 am. Every day. I have a baby who wakes me 3-4 times a night and I have to get up at 7am to go to work. That extra 30 mins in the morning is killing me.

We waited for them to settle in, expecting she would realise it wasn't acceptable for her dog to be barking that early in the morning. It carried on. last BH weekend it was out in the garden at 6.30am on the Saturday and Monday, and at 5.30am on the Sunday. That was the last straw and I rang the council.

Since then it's been much better and has been barking at 8am. I didn't complain directly to her because I thought that if she was a reasonable sort of person she wouldn't let it make a noise that early in the morning. Therefore that meant she was unreasonable and who knows what she'd do if confronted.

My dog barks in the garden, so I don't let it out there. Simple.
