was laying bed when i heard my dog barking at the front of the house. when she should be safely locked up in the back yard. went to look out the back window and the back gate was wide open dog no where to be seen!

the back gate is usually locked, i dont know why it wasnt last night but i cant even remember who opened it last so cant blame anyone for that.

cue me getting up immediatley and searching streets for dog. luckily she had come back of her own accord and was waiting at the back gate while i was looking round the front for her !

dp thinks that this is forgivable as who ever let her out probably did because they were sick of her barking. i think that if this is the casae they should have to come to me to complain and not just let my family out!

the dog does bark but only when she hears noises. although this noise can be just a car and usually is. on a weekend her barking is worse because she can hear people coming home in taxis and drunks walking past.

but if she is barking for more than a couple of minutes at a time i will go and see what she is barking at which stops her.

we live oppposite a bus depo and two very busy roads so there is every chance that the dog could have been run over, she is a terrier so it is her nature to hunt and kill, she could very easily have gotten hold of some ones pet bunny, guniea pig, chickens, kitten (she is scared of cats i have two and the bully her but could easily kill a kitten), for all who ever let out knows she could be a biting dog and could have got hold of a child, also who ever did do it must live in my street as we have alley gates so they would also know that i have a four year old dd who would be gutted if her dog was hurt.

am absolutely livid that some one would be so inconsiderate dp still seems to think this acceptable (but admits it is wrong he is just not annoyed by it) as the dog could have woke them up

No you won't be doing anything about training her - you're just saying that. You obviously can't be bothered or you would have sorted it out years ago.

AitchTwoCiao · 25/05/2008 13:03

lol micci. good wind-up. no-one's this dense irl.

hercules1 · 25/05/2008 13:03

You say you try and not let it bark - you're the owner! you get to decide when and what it barks at!

WanderingTrolley · 25/05/2008 13:03

True Chequers. We may never know who let the dog out.

hercules1 · 25/05/2008 13:04

Aitch - I know it's a wind up really but I cant help taking the bait as it's quite spectacular.

Micci - time to own up!!!!

duchesse · 25/05/2008 13:07

The more I think about this thread, the more I can't help thinking it comes from the same OP with a 4 yr old with enough technology in her room to supply the needs of an entire African village... Trip-trap alert.

TwasMeWhoLetTheDogOut · 25/05/2008 13:12

Oh I fess up.

Feckin little dog. I took it to the bus garage to let it bark to its heart's content, hoping it would get the overnight bus to Farkin Nowhere By Sea.

Bastard thing went home to the woman who I suspect is a vampire (all her curtains are shut in daylight)

Next time I'm bringing Paul McKenna and we're hypnotising the beast. And the dog.

FrannyandZooey · 25/05/2008 13:15

I've lived next door to someone like this
the dog barking was never her fault and there was never anything she could do about it
she also used to have parties that went on all night and when I would go round for say the third time, at 3 am, would say "we HAVE turned the music down, so do you expect us to sit in silence?"

err yes at 3 am in a small quiet street of terraced houses, I do

some people have this attitude, that they are entitled to do what they like and no responsibility to sort out the consequences to other people
there's always some excuse or other

Wisteria · 25/05/2008 13:16

I am usually very sympathetic to all dog owners/ lovers and problems re: neighbours, but in this case your story is inconsistent and there is no way that a responsible dog owner would wait 3 years before doing something about house training - it isn't hard, you just need to be firm and consistent, if this doesn't work then you need professional help.

Stop kidding yourself and help your dog - I don't think one poster has come on and been sympathetic which makes a change for MN - that should tell you something! Just because the barking only disturbs you once or twice a week doesn't mean that she is only barking then.

I think the 'other issues' with the neighbours may give you the answer to your troubles - why don't you be the bigger person here and go and try to build some bridges with your neighbours? - ok they slagged you off in the past, that's no reason to be scared of approaching them now.

As for your neighbour needing to tell you when he is going to move his car at 11.30 at night

YABU, sorry (and I love dogs)

Uriel · 25/05/2008 13:18

micci, you are a neighbour from hell.

AitchTwoCiao · 25/05/2008 13:21

but wisty, that's why this is a load of rot. the neighbour isn't going to be bothered by a dog barking if he's already up and driving, it's the other people on the street who will be.

but the neighbour is the one responsible for this offence, and should warn micci in advance that he's going to take the car out? so the neighbour has a responsibility not to make the dog bark but micci has no such onus on her to keep it inside?

lololol. bollocks.

Wisteria · 25/05/2008 13:23

I know - it's just the attitude that the neighbour should tell her when he's going to move his car that amazed me!! I am incredulous that anyone could think this was a reasonable conclusion!!

It is a wind up isn't it..............

chloemegjess · 25/05/2008 13:24

Can you not get a dog flap? So she can stay in at night but let herself out for a wee? I feel sorry for the dog being shut out all night, and also for your neighbours. Even if it was once a week, its still YOUR dog disturbing THEIR sleep.

Also, your neighbours probably didnt see the point in complaining, you know your dog makes noise but dont do anything about it.

Sorry, don't want to sound rude, just think you need to sort the problem out.

WanderingTrolley · 25/05/2008 13:25

chloe the house is rented and the dog doesn't really exist, but they're getting a dog flap in their new house which doesn't really exist.

Earlybird · 25/05/2008 13:26

If the dog's barking drives you mad during the day (as you said), it doesn't make sense that the dog barks only 'a minute or two' at night. And as someone else said, if it's the middle of the night, it only takes one or two barks to wake someone.

Also - it is getting warmer, so more people have windows open (and I bet you do too), so sound carries more - and bringing her inside (day or night) wouldn't necessarily solve the problem.

Wisteria · 25/05/2008 13:26

if there was a dog flap though, the dog could go out whenever it liked all night and bark!!

A dog should be able to hold the bladder from 11-7 easily.

micci - what are your sleeping/ waking routines? Maybe you are just not allowing your dog ample 'weeing' time before and after sleep..

WanderingTrolley · 25/05/2008 13:29

They couldn't cut a dog flap into the rented house. The new house will have one so the dog can go outside to bark when it hears noise.

Neither the houses or the dog exist.

SoupDragon · 25/05/2008 13:30

I still think the main fault lies with you or your DP for not checking the gate was locked to ensure your "in her nature to hunt and kill" terrier was secured.

BarkyTheDog · 25/05/2008 13:32

Actually I let myself out. I'm fed up with being left in the garden and I fancied a bark in wider horizons.

WanderingTrolley · 25/05/2008 13:32

I agree with SoupDragon.

This would never have happened if you had locked the gate in the first place - but that involves admitting your fault, which does exist.

BarkyTheDog · 25/05/2008 13:34

I took my amp with me and some beer and had a wild ole party

Some of the neighbours complained, but they're unreasonable. I would have bitten them, but I'm not a violent dog.

I'm still intrigued by someone nailing up your door

This isn't indicative of good neighbourly relations in my book

TwasMeWhoLetTheDogOut · 25/05/2008 13:38

Barky you fucker.

Just you try that again, I'll be lying in wait with Paul McKenna and Derren Brown who is a witch. Your wild ole party will end up on Crimewatch and you'll wake up in Marrakech with a muzzle, a shaved back and an I heart farking Garfield tattoo.
