To be done with Labour - no money will be saved

I've just seen on ITV news that even if the bill goes through no money whatsoever will be saved. So it all seems a pretty pointless exercise. What on earth was the point of all this fuss and argument. Might have guessed this government would be a disaster. That huge majority and they can't get anything done.

I hate to think what the UK will be like after 4 more years of this.

Wait until October. If you are a taxpayer. Especially a higher rate one. Bend over now and be prepared for even higher taxes.

The rich are leaving in droves anyway, because they can. They don’t need to put up with this. This socialism is steroids will only hurt those middle earners.

No they are not.

Absolute w@nkers

Even the tories voted against

The Tories withheld their support for the bill because they demanded assurances in return (such as a promise not to raise taxes in the next Parliament) that the government wasn't willing to give. It wasn't a free vote; those Labour MPs who voted against the bill defied the whip. Everyone was supposed to vote along party lines. It's definitely not the case that the Tories have, en masse, developed a moral conscience! Badenoch is one of the few who thinks that the cuts should go much further (and seems oddly convinced that the majority share that view - perhaps she spends too much time on the Mumsnet politics board?).

So which of their policies do you think are going to “sort it out”?

What are you talking about, where did I say anything about Reform sorting it out?

And anyway, you’re the one with an issue with reform, start first by explaining what your issues are.

Based on their tenure so far, would you call Labour a success?

Apparently there is a massive party on the gravy train tonight.

I certainly don't agree with the exact way they have gone about everything, but I think it was right to make employers contribute more to society after benefitting from far too low wages for so long, and right to reform benefits and winter fuel payments.

The problem is Labour’s policies are impacting growth. Which means cuts and / or tax rises.

It’s why they’ve tried and failed to get this bill passed. Now they’ll still need to make cuts etc as they haven’t saved what they wanted.

No they came in strong but have backtracked on almost everything other than the tax rises. Now we have more tax rises to come. So disappointed. It leaves no other options. Tories are too weak, Labour too weak, lib dems will just add more carriages to the gravy train. Reform is the only option left.

Nice try. You tell me why you think they’ll deliver utopia. After all you’re the one who intends voting for them.

RainbowBagels · 01/07/2025 21:05

marbledliving · 01/07/2025 20:31

The bill wasn’t addressing the real issue, which is our ineffective assessment process that results in people claiming disability benefits they would not get under a more competently run system.

Just like the decriminallisation of women having abortions was not addressing the real issue of easily available online access to abortion products.

A government that cannot analyze a situation well enough to identify root causes of problems, let alone come up with effective solutions, is not one I trust.

I love Britain. I think the British people as a whole are sensible, pragmatic, tolerant and not given to extremes. But we have been run dreadfully for decades by successive Governments. Maybe that is in part our own fault. We need to find a way to incentivize smart, competent people with the relevant skills and experience to go into government. But instead we react in horror to raising MP pay and MPs are reviled, regarded with cynicism and subject to some awful abuse, including the murder of two of them. It’s no wonder the people who have the competence to govern well decide upon other more rewarding careers Unless we change this we will continue to be run by the sons of the rich who regard politics as a hobby ( David Cameron and co), fanatical ideologies of the left and the right and well meaning incompetents.

Agree with all of this. Plus the chronic short termism lurching from one term to election earing into the next caused by FPTP.

Yep, Labour got in because the Tories were a bag of shit and now Labour are a bag of shit too

Sums it up perfectly. Let's wait for Reform to get in, then we can all remember the good old days when Boris was fucking everyone over and Starmer was kicking the disabled.

These cuts were never going to save a penny and the government was well aware of it. They were part of a move to downgrade disability benefits (see also the replacement of the term benefits with the offensive "welfare) so that they're only paid to the most severely disabled of all .Starmer is no socialist; arguably he's well to the right of the Major administration.

If anyone still believes the government's main aim here is to save money, ask yourself why inequality caused by poverty costs the NHS 50 bn per year, ten times the amount the cuts were meant to save. And this is entirely ignored by our leaders.

EasternStandard · 01/07/2025 21:07

Thank you.

Let them go down with this ‘Government’ - we need to ensure we don't go down with them.

Jennps · 01/07/2025 21:12

Unfortunately, they will take everyone down with them. At this point these morons are going for ‘scorched earth’.

Trash the country as much as possible to appease the far left.

ForWittyTealOP · 01/07/2025 21:12

We have a ton of paper millionaires. Plenty are older people who don't pay much tax anyway, for instance the baby boom generation who bought houses in places like London in the 70s/80s.
Nobody is massively concerned about the "wealthy" leaving in droves. It tends not to make a noticeable difference.

ItWillWash · 01/07/2025 21:13

Since you couldn't be bothered to read the article I linked I will leave this short snippet below for you which summarises it nicely.

The numbers cited are questionable, given they are based upon a survey by a ‘global wealth intelligence’ firm. However, even if entirely accurate, it would still represent less than 0.5% of the more than three million millionaires who live in the UK. This amounts to a rounding error and is hardly the “exodus” claimed.

I'm not claiming Labour is getting everything right. What they've managed up to now is questionable at best but they are not driving millionaires away in droves.

I'm a Labour voter. I'm not happy with Labour, and if they continue this way for the rest of their term, I'll either spoil my vote or vote LibDem, depending on their policies. But it is early days. They inherited a hell of a mess, and I am still holding out hope that they'll turn it around.

Disability related welfare, and all welfare in this country is out of control. There are over 1000 additional people a day going on disability related benefits. Generally, more than 50% of people now take more out of the system than pay.

The welfare system needs cutting down. Drastically. Disability related benefits would be a good start, before the country ends up with a Greek style crash, where money markets decide that we simply cannot afford to run this country anymore.

The proposal was to cut £5b from welfare, the country spends more than £1tn a year so £5b would be a drop in the ocean. The socialist Labour MPs, most of whom have never done a real day’s work or have any experience of working in the real economy decided that they wouldn’t support it. Supine Starmer and Rachel from accounts decided it was too much like hard work and gave up.

Massive tax rises are coming.

Edited

The Greek crisis was because people didn't pay their taxes...avoidant rich just like here

Popsicle1981 · 01/07/2025 21:16

I feel deflated. With 1 in 4 working age claiming to be disabled, and large proportion getting 800 a month - maybe I should join them? What do you need that money for if you have anxiety, depression or ADHD? Meanwhile, my children struggle to earn, work, save. They’ll never own a house. They will just be stuck paying for all of this.

And then I have just had to watch MPs at the house of commons saying that had to ‘vote with their hearts’. No, I need you to vote with your dang head. How about thinking about the hard working taxpayer who feels like a cashcow right now.
