To be done with Labour - no money will be saved

I've just seen on ITV news that even if the bill goes through no money whatsoever will be saved. So it all seems a pretty pointless exercise. What on earth was the point of all this fuss and argument. Might have guessed this government would be a disaster. That huge majority and they can't get anything done.

I hate to think what the UK will be like after 4 more years of this.

I don't understand why it's acceptable for so many MPs to choose not to vote It's like they have the very well paid job of an MP but don't worry you don't actually have to do anything

How about we just rush through the assisted dying law, then, and extend it to all disabled people who aren't able to earn enough money to live on and have any kind of enjoyable life?

Just think how much money that would save long term, eh?

Maybe we could also look at Iran, Afghanistan and North Korea too, and see if they have some valuable methods of enlightened, progressive government techniques that they could teach us?

Most people on here would be happy if they used to assisted dying bill to kill off those pesky pensioners who dare to claim a pension.

More people need to work. We can’t afford benefits for ADHD. We can’t afford for old people to stay warm FFS. Something has to stop.

We can't afford all these PIP payouts, And households with joint income of £70k will qualify for winter fuel payment. Also one person in a couple gets it even of partner is a billionaire Utter madness. If their personal income is under £35k.

Most people on here? Don't be ridiculous. A few maybe but certainly not most.

I get that their inheritance was appalling but what exactly are they doing about it? This disability reform was about as close as they have come to a big idea (and maaaaybe abolishing NHS England at a stretch) and it's just fallen flat on its face.

Big reform is almost much always initiated in a Government's first year and that's already been and gone with pretty much nothing bar some minor fiscal tweaks that barely keep things ticking over.

Yes I was hopeful for big reforms in the first budget, but instead Labour are just pissing about. Things like getting rid of the childcare / child benefit / £100-125k tax traps would INCREASE the overall tax take. Why not do it??? It’s simple, basic stuff that any impartial economist would tell them to do as a basic first step, and yet nothing? It seems they are afraid of their own daft, socialist MPs.

We need a consensus in parliament that taxes need to change in order to save the welfare state and other public services, and these changes will be unpopular but are necessary. The basic rate of income tax needs to rise. The VAT threshold needs to be drastically slashed and NICs need to be rolled into income tax.

If you're an additional rate taxpayer in this country, never forget that you are more contemptible than dirt on the sole of a shoe to these short-sighted cretins and their unambitious, feckless, indolent voter base.

Tax rises coming in the autumn. Thanks folks. Starmer has not only been humiliated, but, in October, Reeves will now be forced to break the manifesto pledge of not increasing income tax.

ohfourfoxache · 01/07/2025 20:30

We can’t afford to shut so many people out of the job market

Huge numbers of people who have a disability, want to work but are discriminated against. I mean if they can’t get a fucking job then what are they supposed to do?? Curl up and die?

Jennps · 01/07/2025 20:30

The markets are betting on a recession now, that’s how disastrous this government is.

The NI hike has caused businesses to go to the wall. Unemployment is now official increasing.

Debt interest is up because of uncontrolled masses of public spending, even more so than under the Tories.

Inflation is up and food inflation back up nearer 10%.

Gilt yields are higher than under Liz Truss.

Next up is the employments rights bill which is basically a corrupt con to get employees to pay towards the unions so Labour can get a mandatory cut from those payments. And people will be able to sue their employers at the drop of a hat for anything if they want any excuse. Unemployment is going to increase further as more firms go under.

The welfare budget is going to be bigger than education by 2030. Borrowing costs are already higher than what we spend on defence. Guess, what’s coming, comrades. More taxes.

marbledliving · 01/07/2025 20:31

The bill wasn’t addressing the real issue, which is our ineffective assessment process that results in people claiming disability benefits they would not get under a more competently run system.

Just like the decriminallisation of women having abortions was not addressing the real issue of easily available online access to abortion products.

A government that cannot analyze a situation well enough to identify root causes of problems, let alone come up with effective solutions, is not one I trust.

I love Britain. I think the British people as a whole are sensible, pragmatic, tolerant and not given to extremes. But we have been run dreadfully for decades by successive Governments. Maybe that is in part our own fault. We need to find a way to incentivize smart, competent people with the relevant skills and experience to go into government. But instead we react in horror to raising MP pay and MPs are reviled, regarded with cynicism and subject to some awful abuse, including the murder of two of them. It’s no wonder the people who have the competence to govern well decide upon other more rewarding careers Unless we change this we will continue to be run by the sons of the rich who regard politics as a hobby ( David Cameron and co), fanatical ideologies of the left and the right and well meaning incompetents.

Wait until NHS cuts take effect - thousands of us are going to be unemployed in the next 6-9 months

The strange thing is that the handout takers are turkeys that vote for Xmas.

Agree @Lougle we’ve gotten a really long way away from practical solutions to cut waiting lists. Or practical solutions on anything.

The wait list crisis is so bad they should be making it as easy as possible for people to get the help they need and not double assessing…

Was thinking the same, in singapore MP wages are almost $200’000

Legalizing abortion is basically opening the door wide open to female infanticide. Which is already prevalent in many cultures resulting in the UK. The statistics already show that male to female ratio among these communities is manipulated through aborting female fetuses.

What a genius idea to legalize killing female unborn babies.

Once again, the progressives strike. Congratulations.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 01/07/2025 20:36

My dd would love to work but unless she has a super understanding employer then she won't ever be able to hold down a job full time.

She needs too much flexibility and time off. Therefore her only option is self employment which I hope she manages later

The govt need to make is easier and financially viable for employers to support a person back into work.

Surely by providing a generous bursary or grant to employers to do this and prove good practice it would be cheaper long term and everyone wins. Paid only once employer shows support implemented and upheld Otherwise it's open to fraud or abuse

hattie43 · 01/07/2025 20:36

They are totally inadequate as a government

Agree @HeBeaverandSheBeaver no attempt
to look at the issues facing young adults with employment and incentivising employers…
