To be done with Labour - no money will be saved

Viviennemary · 01/07/2025 18:54

I've just seen on ITV news that even if the bill goes through no money whatsoever will be saved. So it all seems a pretty pointless exercise. What on earth was the point of all this fuss and argument. Might have guessed this government would be a disaster. That huge majority and they can't get anything done.

I hate to think what the UK will be like after 4 more years of this.

I honestly think theres going to come a time when we will struggle to sell our bonds. It’s going to be really really painful. People saying they need more don’t understand that we have to borrow money and the people who lend it to us decide how much interest we pay. That number can go up and we can find ourselves with very few options to keep services running very quickly.

I think the UK will be in for a very severe financial shock in a few years if nothing is done. Think I’m developing a stomach ulcer.

onehorserace · 01/07/2025 19:59

I'm also shocked by the cost of the cars that people are entitled to! I'm on a specific car forum and shocked. My eyes have been opened.

mutinyonthetwix · 01/07/2025 20:00

I genuinely have no idea what they are trying to achieve anymore. I am pretty certain they don't know either. It's yet more managed decline and papering over the cracks.

I am resigned to the cycle of ever increasing taxes for ever shitter public services rolling on.

greencartbluecart · 01/07/2025 20:02

Everyone wants everything and no one wants to pay and everything is untouchable

a decade or two of running down the health service and promotion of unhealthy lifestyles is catching up with the UK

and I thought I was being cynical when i said the torus deliberately lost the last election

They'll attempt to spin this as a victory for the government but we all know this has been an embarrassing debacle. They've ended up pissing everybody off, those who opposed the changes AND those who agreed with them. What an achievement!

Kendall going on about it passing. But with is in it? Nothing by the sounds of it going by pp.

Teado · 01/07/2025 20:04

I voted for them a year ago and was excited when they won comfortably. Imagine how much of a twit I feel right now.

spoonbillstretford · 01/07/2025 20:06

The last government left us with myriad intransigent issues that will take a lot more than a year to fix.

Arrearing50 · 01/07/2025 20:09

well, they certainly have wasted a year achieving very little.

Are their policies making it better? The economy in particular was hit by NI policy, which means cuts.

And now cuts that end in an empty bill.

CanelliniBeans · 01/07/2025 20:10

More people need to work. We can’t afford benefits for ADHD. We can’t afford for old people to stay warm FFS. Something has to stop.

Lougle · 01/07/2025 20:10

Everything needs to be looked at objectively, which is not happening. An example, not related to benefits, but disability related. DD3 has ADHD. She is on an NHS waiting list but was struggling so much (out of school) that I paid for a private assessment with some gifted money. She has been treated for her ADHD for a few months, but the GP has refused to do shared care, and says that she needs to have the NHS assessment if we want NHS prescriptions. The only difference to the health service is that it will also cost them the price of the ADHD assessment and keep the waiting lists longer.

Jennps · 01/07/2025 19:44

Disability related welfare, and all welfare in this country is out of control. There are over 1000 additional people a day going on disability related benefits. Generally, more than 50% of people now take more out of the system than pay.

The welfare system needs cutting down. Drastically. Disability related benefits would be a good start, before the country ends up with a Greek style crash, where money markets decide that we simply cannot afford to run this country anymore.

The proposal was to cut £5b from welfare, the country spends more than £1tn a year so £5b would be a drop in the ocean. The socialist Labour MPs, most of whom have never done a real day’s work or have any experience of working in the real economy decided that they wouldn’t support it. Supine Starmer and Rachel from accounts decided it was too much like hard work and gave up.

Massive tax rises are coming.

How about we just rush through the assisted dying law, then, and extend it to all disabled people who aren't able to earn enough money to live on and have any kind of enjoyable life?

Just think how much money that would save long term, eh?

Maybe we could also look at Iran, Afghanistan and North Korea too, and see if they have some valuable methods of enlightened, progressive government techniques that they could teach us?

If you want to use assisted dying bill to kill people, maybe you missed the news, but that’s already happened. It’s the proponents of uncontrolled welfare who are mostly in favour of that also.

Didimum · 01/07/2025 20:16

I think it’s about time everyone starts realising that no political party can combat the current challenges successfully. They are far too complex and far too long term. It’s going to be the very slowest game for any government.

That’s it.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 01/07/2025 20:16

I do t tho k starmer is the biggest issue. Though im he seems a bit weak. It's bloody reeves that needs to go. All her ideas are u turned and make everything worse in the long run. Absolutely useless.

Yes exactly this - the Tories shafted the economy and lined the pockets of their rich mates. So if they, the rich indeed go to another country well then good because Labour got rid of the non dom status and if they don’t want to pay their fair share they shouldn’t live here.

How are we to find everything people want? I know Reform will make worse cuts to public spending and will gut the NHS. Lord Rothermere who owns the Daily Mail lives in Monaco to hide his millions and avoid paying tax in this country while vilifying all those on benefits in the U.K and those who don’t pay their way. I think at least Labour are making changes where needed and reverting and showing people they’re listening.

Spartahori · 01/07/2025 20:18

Theunamedcat · 01/07/2025 19:00

Except this bag of shit is actively trying to kill people

Pip saves lives the proposed cuts will cost lives it will also put people out of work

In my personal situation if I return to work tomorrow carers need to be bought in paid for by the government to take care of my responsibilities that will cost them more but not to worry they will get my £83 a week back in carers allowance that should redress the balance right?

What happens when the money runs out? When you don’t get PIP or carers? Because that’s what’s going to happen if these idiotic, immature politicians keep ripping up Keir’s plans to salvage the welfare state. The country simply cannot afford to keep paying a benefits bill that is soaring exponentially. These ‘rebel’ Labour MPs are too stupid to understand the basic economic realities of this country.

Who is going to explain to this poster about how much tax the top 1% pay.

Oh dear, no wonder this country is f’d, with this level of understanding.

I certainly don't agree with the exact way they have gone about everything, but I think it was right to make employers contribute more to society after benefitting from far too low wages for so long, and right to reform benefits and winter fuel payments.

To be honest this is what you get when you have the lowest calibre of morons in charge.

To Tier, who failed at absolutely everything when in public office and fighting for terrorists and unsavouries when DPP is now having a good go at trashing the country.

Rachel from accounts, she not plagiarizing books, lying about her CV and allegedly fiddling expenses and bunking off work, is killing off what’s left of the economy. Gilt yields are now higher than under Liz Truss. This idiot disguised as chancellor is doing a worse job than Truss.

The entire cabinet are like the human manifestation of what ‘thick as mince’ must look like. The country is in deep deep trouble, even more so than under the Tories, who’d have thought it, eh?

Perfectly put. 👏👏

Unfortunately this is the level of intellect possessed by the political classes. Most of these MPs have never had real jobs or run anything. Glorified bootlickers and leaflet throwers got given tickets to run for parliament at the the while the public simply wanted to punish the Tories by booting them out. So these morons accidentally found themselves in charge of the country.

No other government would give the Chagos Islands away, then pay another country to rent them back. It makes the UK look so so stupid.

I get that their inheritance was appalling but what exactly are they doing about it? This disability reform was about as close as they have come to a big idea (and maaaaybe abolishing NHS England at a stretch) and it's just fallen flat on its face.

Big reform is almost much always initiated in a Government's first year and that's already been and gone with pretty much nothing bar some minor fiscal tweaks that barely keep things ticking over.

So FDI dries up, people move their money out of the UK markets (I.e. the stuff that creates jobs). Millionaires fleeing is a bad thing for everyone. Not a good thing. The top 1% pay almost 30% of tax.
