Is this a crazy idea?

We are a family of 4 DC aged 11 and 9.

My husband would like to sell our house and buy two, two bedroom flats.

The flats are next door to each other and he envisages us (me and him) living in one and the children living in the other.

This doesn't sit right with me for a few reasons, I feel like we would lose family time if they have their own living space, not being close in case of a fire, giving up on a freehold property to buy two leaseholds and the annual charge they involve.

Is this a wild idea, is it even legal to live in a seperate flat to your minor children?

Anyone done anything like this or similar? Any thing else I need to take into consideration?

Wind up 💯

Troubleclef · 30/06/2025 16:22

I am pretty sure it would be illegal for a start.

Zippidydoodah · 30/06/2025 16:27

Two sets of twins aged 11 and 9?

you can’t possibly be considering this for real.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 30/06/2025 16:28

WTF are you talking about. No an 11 and 9 year old can’t live alone. End of story.

SmudgeButt · 30/06/2025 16:29

OK so besides the fact that your children, who are minors, would be in a property completely unsupervised for most of the time I think that you both need to consider the financial implications. Double the bills. Two sets of council tax, gas bills, electricity bills, tv licences, building and contents insurance etc.

Oh and don't forget that because one of these will be your second home the council tax on that will be extra high.

Oh just tell him to get stuffed.

MounjaroMounjaro · 30/06/2025 16:32

Either he's a complete nutcase or you have made this up. One or the other.

Shinyandnew1 · 30/06/2025 16:32

Who does he think will be taking care of your own children whilst they are living alone in a flat?

Social care will be involved pretty quickly, is that what he wants?!

GreenFields07 · 30/06/2025 16:33

Oh come on 😂😂 this has got to be a wind up wtf!!
If not, you need to give your head a wobble even giving this a second thought. Its concerning that either of you even let this thought enter your mind let alone would actually consider it!! No, you cant let your young children live alone, not even if they are next door. Its neglect and down right dangerous.
Also, even if it was acceptable, how is it more beneficial to have 2 sets of outgoings? If you can afford that, why not just save the spare money and put it into another property at a later date.

BobbieTables · 30/06/2025 16:34

A completely mental idea if true.

TreeDudette · 30/06/2025 16:35

We are buying a rental flat now for our teen. For various reasons her earning potential as an adult is likely to be limited and she wants to stay in our small village and me and DP want to move to the coast. We need to get her mortgage paid off asap so we can potentially move later unencumbered. She's 14 and very happy with her own company and we can see the flat from our front window - it's like 3 houses down. I'm assuming she'll be ready to move out 18+ and she certainly can't leave home before so am renting out the flat. Unless you could knock 2 flats through until the kids were old enough to leave home (18+) then your DHs idea is nuts.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 30/06/2025 16:35

This has to be bollocks. Living next door to your children?

lovescats3 · 30/06/2025 16:38

This is illegal

Reallyneedsaholiday · 30/06/2025 16:39

I don't think it's a bad plan IF he's looking to the future and just throwing ideas out there, for then. I'm considering similar myself. But if he's thinking about selling the house immediately, then it's a terrible idea. Just to add though, and even of he's thinking of the future, living next door to tenants is not a good plan, trust me
.

3awesomestars · 30/06/2025 16:40

Wow! He wants your 11 and 9 year old to live next door. Can I ask why you are even considering this and not just shutting it down protecting your children from this idiocy.

TheFinePrintess · 30/06/2025 16:41

Fuck me, I’ve seen some bonkers stuff on MN over the years but this one’s in the top ten….

ScratCat · 30/06/2025 16:42

We are older parents

With dementia? You can’t be seriously considering this.

LurkyMcLurkinson · 30/06/2025 16:43

Sounds like he just wants to tap out of parenting.

BlokeHereInPeace · 30/06/2025 16:43

This stuff has to be made up in order to generate traffic and interest from the Daily Mail.

Stompythedinosaur · 30/06/2025 16:44

I'm voting it's an insane idea. He intends to leave your young dc living independently and unsupervised? It's obviously illegal.

Even the suggestion makes me think he doesn't have an appropriate bond with his dc. Can you consider therapy or something?

Honestly, this is really crazy and unsuitable.

Jujujudo · 30/06/2025 16:45

I’d go live in one with the kids and he can go live in the other alone. Perfect arrangement for a selfish dick.

terracelane23 · 30/06/2025 16:45

Is he serious? I can’t think of a reason to do this.

Suffolker · 30/06/2025 16:45

Of all the insane things I have read on here, this is up there with the very maddest.

Wanttobefree2 · 30/06/2025 16:46

This is a joke, surely?

Tiswa · 30/06/2025 16:46

This is an absolutely awful idea that is neglectful of course you cannot have 2 under 18 living in an apartment by themselves - how would insurance would, how would council tax work. And frankly it is irresponsible

i would report you
