To think there are jobs in the world which no human being should be doing?

Abattoir workers
Online child sex abuse investigators
Are 2 in particular that spring to mind. They require people to become numb to pain and suffering.
In anticipation of snarky replies: no, I don't know how else they should be done and yes, I know there's always been pain and suffering. It's at an industrial scale now though.
Maybe it takes a certain kind of human to do it, which is worrying in itself.

So called sex work. No one has the right to use another human being's body as a masturbatory aid.

temperedolive · 28/06/2025 09:38

I have a relative whose job involves investigations of tgaat nature, and he'd vehemently disagree. As long as the need for the job exists, people NEED to be doing it. There should be more funding available to hire more people for this, because that's how it gets shut down and children get rescued.

fourelementary · 28/06/2025 09:39

Maybe AI could be used for the child sex abuse work in the future or maybe already is? As I agree- seeing so much depravity must be damaging to the people In this line of work- or maybe even more worrying would be the people
not damaged by it.

Abattoir work? I guess if you can see the process is as humane as possible, and efficient and not cruel. Then it’s not so bad. It’s part and parcel of the circle of life and how we get meat to eat.

ItDoesntHaveToBeASnowman · 28/06/2025 09:40

I think it’s a certain type of arsehole that could be a bailiff.

CastleCrasher · 28/06/2025 09:50

I did a job similar to your second example and strongly disagree. It didn't cause me, or any of my colleagues to become numb to it but it is utterly essential for humans to be involved to support victims and to care about them and the outcomes. They are difficult jobs and ones not suited to everyone, but they are so very important

lnks · 28/06/2025 09:52

It’s not like people are being forced to do those jobs. They choose to.

ConstantIllness · 28/06/2025 09:57

I know the 2nd example is an incredibly important job and thank god there's people willing to do it. But jfc surely the burnout rate is huge?

Yes I know and that's also partly my point.

I've always thought it a shame that most of the worlds toilets are cleaned by women

noctilucentcloud · 28/06/2025 10:03

"Maybe it takes a certain kind of human to do it, which is worrying in itself."

I do think it takes a certain kind of person to work in child sexual abuse detection. I think they will be empathetic, caring, dedicated and resilient. I know I wouldn't have the resilience to be able to cope (I have MH issues). It doesn't worry me that it's a certain type of person - I have admiration for them and are glad that there are individuals willing and mentally able to do this.

Purplebunnie · 28/06/2025 10:04

I don't think anyone should be in long tunnels underground risking their lives digging out coal for either industrial or home use. Ditto any kind of mineral extraction

Bridport · 28/06/2025 10:16

I am constantly astonished by the percentage of murderers and violent criminals who turn out to be abattoir workers or ground workers there must surely be some type of person drawn to this sort of work or a connection somehow.

Some people easily or happily do things that most people find repellent....hunting and shooting for example. The thought of it makes me sick, but other perfectly reasonable seeming folk get kitted up in fancy clothes and go out to kill animals for pleasure.

TenderChicken · 28/06/2025 10:17

I've done the abattoir one. Its been over 10 years, but when I think too much on the 1000s of animals I've killed, I feel like throwing up. You've got to keep it buried.

I know someone who works in forensic IT. Because of the nature of their skills (extracting deleted information from hard drives and recovering deleted web history, etc), they are involved in a lot of child abuse cases. However, they are technically not a specialist in the field. They extract the information and then pass it to specially trained investigators. Although they don't have to watch the videos, they see the thumbnails and images when they're downloaded.

She loves her job. She hates the images she sees, and frequently sees images she says she will never be able to forget. She often leaves work in tears but she says the satisfaction she gets when a victim gets justice because of the work she has done makes it all worth it. She'd love for her job to not have to exist but for as long as it does she would never do anything else.

I don't think she's hard-nosed person or has any darkness in her. I think she is very empathetic and has a very strong sense of justice and a need to help people. She has regular counselling provided through her employer.

My BIL applied to work as a bailiff as a summer job when he was a student (he’s a big hefty bloke, I think they thought he’d be good). He resigned after one day, just couldn’t do it.

What a strange way of looking at it. Surely most people have sex primarily for the pleasure they get out of it, paying or not. I imagine most couples use each other as a masturbatory aid from time to time. If someone is happy to charge for it and the other is happy to pay, who cares?

They seem to take pleasure in it a lot of the time. I could never force my way into someone's home.

The problem is that there is a lot of trafficking in the sex industry and I also imagine that a lot of these women (trafficked or not) aren't happy selling it, they are bloody miserable and this is their last option.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 28/06/2025 10:31

@DrowningInSyrup yes and grooming of vulnerable young women and drug addiction. I think there are very very few women who do sex work because they enjoy it or are indifferent to it.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 28/06/2025 10:33

I actually respect the abbatoir workers. I admit I'm a hypocrite because I'd hate to see animals suffering and don't agree with blood sports but I do enjoy eating meat. I love it actually. So without those people one of my life's pleasures would be gone.

I can't understand how anyone gets pleasure from harming an animal. However, animals shot in the wild suffer less than those in slaughterhouses.

Anus bleacher

Genevieva · 28/06/2025 10:38

Are you vegetarian?

I am not, but I always buy British, outdoor bred meat and I avoid halal because I believe it is less humane and I am not Muslim. I don’t believe people have a right to eat meat, but it is a natural and normal thing to do. With that in mind I think there should absolutely be highly trained professional abattoirs.

Unfortunately small family run abattoirs that provide the lowest stress experience for livestock are closing because of increasing costs. This is forcing farmers to send their animals to factory abattoirs, which is less desirable.

As is the first example.

Ponoka7 · 28/06/2025 10:41

By that train of thought, most jobs in the hospital, MH, Police, Military shouldn't be done either, probably the prisons, as well. I've worked in child services, you are part of the prevention. It's a different mindset and thought process than you've got. I thought that this thread was going to be about children breaking rocks, manual process across Africa, teams of rubbish dump workers across the world. Or even children walking miles for water. MN is embarrassing at times.
