Do you iron?

Aibu not to iron? I own an iron somewhere, it’s about 20 years old and may or may not still work. I use it very very occasionally if I’m going out in something that needs ironing.

YABU - ironing is a task that should be done on all clothes

YANBU - ironing should never be done, or only very very occasionally.

I do every week. Just outer garments and duvet covers/ pillowcases. If I can dry something on a hanger and the creases drop I will and won’t iron it. I hate to wear clothes that are creased and I love to see a pile of neatly ironed clothes. I think clothes look much smarter when ironed. I do a lot of contemplated thinking or singalong to favourite music when ironing. I’m 66 so it’s probably a generational thing. My married daughter doesn’t own an iron but has a hand held steamer

amicisimma · 25/06/2025 10:11

Yes. Love it. So soothing.

And I love wearing ironed clothes and sleeping between ironed sheets.

But neither of your options works for me. I wouldn't say ironing 'should' or 'should never' be done.

Cherrytree86 · 25/06/2025 10:13

No life is too short. I’d rather go to the gym

KvotheTheBloodless · 25/06/2025 10:14

I'm somewhere in the middle of YABU and YANBU. I only iron shirts and, occasionally, skirts/dresses/tops that really need it.

Even non-iron shirts need a quick once-over to be office-ready.

InfiniteArmyofOctopi · 25/06/2025 10:15

Nope never. None of my clothes need ironing. Most of them are made of jersey or are jeans.
DH is the only person who irons in this house, he does his shirts
I will concede that my older son's shirts also need ironing because he doesn't hang them up properly, but he should be doing that.

whoopsnomore · 25/06/2025 10:17

I own a few items that need to be ironed - I actually quite enjoy ironing in a "order out of chaos" calming type of way, but I rarely have the time, so it's maybe about once a month-ish, or iron nice bed-linen if friends are coming to stay.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/06/2025 10:17

I do not. I used to. When my kids were small I used to get no end of pleasure from ironing five sets of outfits and folding them up neatly and putting them all in the right place in each child's set of drawers.

Unfortunately, the kids would hoik the lot out onto the floor in order to find whatever it was that they wanted to wear that day, tread on all my precisely-folded and lovingly ironed clothes, kick them into corners, leave them for the dog to sleep on and just generally trash my work.

At that point I saw sense and found better things to do with my time.

Ek1234 · 25/06/2025 10:23

Yes I iron everything. I prefer the look and feel of ironed clothes, and don't feel comfortable going out in things that haven't been ironed. It takes me a few hours a week to get through it all for the family, but it's worth the effort for me. Each to their own I guess.

ToadRage · 25/06/2025 10:25

I don't own any clothing that needs ironing. My husband irons but only occasionally if he is going out and needs a smart shirt. He used to iron his shirt every morning when he had to wear a suit for work but since he changed his job he doesn't need to any more. When i lived at home my Mum used to pay me to iron Dad's and Brother's shirts cos she hated it and got even more annoyed when my Dad said my ironing was better than hers. Don't think my Dad or Brother ever picked up an iron in their life.

funinthesun19 · 25/06/2025 10:45

I iron things as and when I need to iron them. I definitely don’t stand there for ages ironing laundry loads as I think it’s a waste of time. Nobody is looking in your wardrobe to see if your clothes are ironed.

Wannabegreenfingers · 25/06/2025 10:51

Yes, I iron. My clothes look so much better for it, and I feel better in ironed clothes than when something is all creased up. It takes me no more than 30 minutes a week to iron mine and two teenagers clothes.

WitchOfSomorrostro · 25/06/2025 10:51

But of course. Wouldn't be seen dead in shabby, creased and crumpled clothing. It just looks shit. I hate linen with a passion and never wear it, but other clothes also crease, however they're dried. And yes, it's easy to tell. I like my clothes pristine. Don't wear leggings, trackies and the like, so ironing is a must for me.

However, never in my life have I ironed bedding, towels, socks, underwear and whatever else. That's a step too far. For me.

HappydaysArehere · 25/06/2025 10:51

No learnt years ago it is not necessary.

Keyesor · 25/06/2025 10:58

I'm guessing everyone that doesn't iron is wearing polyester (Primark is full of it, polyester summer dresses that feel too hot) and leggings/lycra all the time. I certainly don't iron everything, but clothing just feels and sits better on when it's ironed.

JoshLymanSwagger · 25/06/2025 10:59

I haven't ironed for years...but I'm thinking about buying a new iron (the old one is probably rusty inside) and replacing the cover on my ironing board.

estrogone · 25/06/2025 11:01

Nope. Don't own an iron or ironing board.

We have a hand steamer - bought it from Aldi and it's rubbish. Just make sure I shake everything thoroughly before hanging up. Does the trick for us.

Nope. No polyester here.

Dox9 · 25/06/2025 11:14

I iron but only clothes that need it. I love linen but it does need to be ironed in my opinion.
I actually own a travel iron and bring it on holidays to deal with said linen clothing!

Doggielovecharlotte · 25/06/2025 11:15

I’m exactly the same - 20 year old iron somewhere

just buy one of those hand steam cleaners for when you need to

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 25/06/2025 11:16

Yes. I have a v powerful steam generator iron. I couldn’t wear unironed clothes or sleep in unironed bedding. Tbh 99% of my clothes are cotton (I can’t wear wool and don’t like man made fibres) and to wear them unironed would be unthinkable for me.
Fortunately my iron makes ironing very fast.
That said, I couldn’t give a hoot what anyone else does and don’t notice if their clothes are ironed or not.

Nourishinghandcream · 25/06/2025 11:18

Yes, practically everything is ironed.
Clothes look so much nicer and sit in the drawers better.

catin8oot5 · 25/06/2025 11:19

Life is too short to spend it flattening your clothes

Bimblebombles · 25/06/2025 11:20

My DP irons his shirt and my dress if we're going out and its done while I'm doing my make up. We don't iron outside of that.

Mostly the iron is used for affixing iron-on name tags.

lunaswand · 25/06/2025 11:27

occasionally if i'm going out out but generally a quick spray with crease release does the job

unsync · 25/06/2025 12:07

Only when I'm sewing. Strictly speaking, that's not ironing either, it's pressing.

In a pinch though, I find GHDs are good for plackets, cuffs etc.
