Do you iron?

Aibu not to iron? I own an iron somewhere, it’s about 20 years old and may or may not still work. I use it very very occasionally if I’m going out in something that needs ironing.

YABU - ironing is a task that should be done on all clothes

YANBU - ironing should never be done, or only very very occasionally.

When I was a child, my mum ironed everything - pants, tea towels, even tights(under a tea towel) and socks. That gave me an almighty scunner for ironing. When married with a young family, I got a company to do the ironing. It was taken away one night and brought back the next, beautifully pressed and hanging on hangers.
Now I'm retired and live alone so I iron just what is visible to the world.

Deerrobin · 25/06/2025 09:05

Only shirts, which tends to just be for weddings and funerals. Maybe will change when the kids are a high school if shirts need ironing. Everything is hung up rather than in drawers though which I think helps.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 25/06/2025 09:07

Its not should or should not. Its want to or dont want to.

You can absolutely tell the difference between freshly ironed and unironed, it just doesn't really matter to everyone if their clothes aren't pressed and crisp.

I stopped ironing when my kids left school and no longer needed trousers with a crease and all that. I buy very forgiving clothes and while you can tell they aren't ironed, I dont care.

My husband likes all his clothes ironed so he irons them. He likes starched shirts and trousers with a crease you could use to cut throats.

Everyone's different.

pontivex · 25/06/2025 09:12

Chicked the iron away about 10 years ago and not missed it or considered ironing. I last ironed about 25 years ago when I bought, wore and washed a ‘crisp white cotton shirt’. It took about half an hour to get the thing looking slightly better than a used dishrag so I never wore that shirt again nor have I ever bought a thing similar again.

Anything that has a couple creases I shove it in the bathroom while I shower. All the creases drop out but anything that could crease gets hung straight out of the washing machine, pulled into shape and that does fine. Even linen.

JadeSeahorse · 25/06/2025 09:12

Yes dependant upon the fabric.

I used to iron everything until I realised that if you pop items into the tumble dryer on a low heat for 5 minutes, after line drying, any creases will just drop.out.

I now just iron anything which still has creases - which I hate - and always iron bedding so any ironing is always done on a Friday morning when the beds are changed. 😁

Absentmindedsmile · 25/06/2025 09:13

No. Ironing is so early 00’s..

MyDogHumpsThings · 25/06/2025 09:14

I would only iron for a wedding, funeral, or job interview.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 25/06/2025 09:15

I do iron most things.

Haven't voted though, just because I iron doesn't mean someone's unreasonable because they don't.

Dexterrolledoffthesofa · 25/06/2025 09:17

I DETEST ironing.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/06/2025 09:18

I iron more in the summer as I line dry more and clothes look more creased, plus thinner fabrics seem to crease more. Very rarely iron in winter.

HotCrossCat · 25/06/2025 09:18

Never owned an iron. Children been through school with creased shirts. Life is too short. Def can tell when something has been ironed but I just don't care enough. Will not be on my deathbed thinking about how I wished I'd spent hours ironing.

InterestedDad37 · 25/06/2025 09:18

Yes, when I need to. But I don't often need to. I'm retired now, but I always used to iron my shirts for work 😀

Flamingoknees · 25/06/2025 09:19

Yes, everything, including towels, bedding, socks, pants etc. I just like things ironed🤷 I don't mind standing in the kitchen for an hour or 2 with the TV on.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/06/2025 09:20

I do iron a lot of summer things - they’re nearly all cotton or a cotton/linen mix, and except for a very few, do look awful otherwise. We have a drier but I rarely use it any more, for both cost and (mostly) eco reasons. It did go on the other day, after a little Gds who was staying wet the bed, so I wouldn’t be without it.

Hardly any of my winter things ever need ironing.

KimberleyClark · 25/06/2025 09:20

I iron DH’s shirts, which I am happy to do as he does most of the cooking and washing up, but not much else.

Ironing pants will shorten their life.

Comedycook · 25/06/2025 09:21

I iron...not everything...I'd say most stuff is just folded but certain things have to be...so dh shirts, t shirts, trousers...I have some dresses and shirts that need ironing too. I don't have a tumble dryer though and everything is line dried either outdoors or on the heated airer.

I always iron pants after my dc had worms....it was over a decade ago but I'm still not over it

FastFood · 25/06/2025 09:22

Yes, I iron almost everything, clothes, bedding, and sometimes tea towels.
No kids, no partner so it's just my stuff.
I find it quite relaxing, and I absolutely love the feeling of ironed clothes.

Helpmeplease2025 · 25/06/2025 09:22

Yes, I think you can pretty much always tell the difference.

YANBU – especially if most of what you're wearing day-to-day is gym wear. Modern fabrics, particularly in activewear, are designed to be wrinkle-resistant and often look fine straight from the wash. No need to waste time ironing when your clothes are made to skip that step entirely!

superplumb · 25/06/2025 09:24

What about kods cotton t shirts. Even with the tumble dryer they get creased... school shirts I can get away with as long as theyre tumbled dried and not hung up outside but in the summer id rather not use it amd save money

LimeLime · 25/06/2025 09:26

When my daughter was at school I ironed every week, when she left I was delighted to give it up and nowadays I can usually be found on Christmas morning ironing my best blouse which has been in the ironing basket since the previous Christmas.

Topseyt123 · 25/06/2025 09:27

I've not ironed in twenty years and rarely did before that. Total waste of time.

I'm not even completely sure where my iron is. It almost never sees the light of day.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/06/2025 09:28

Teenagerantruns · 25/06/2025 08:00

Never . I used to iron school uniform about 15 years ago. Since then the iron is just sitting in a cupboard. I really should get rid or it and ironing board.

I got rid of my ironing board around 10 years back when I realised any ironing I did do was on the kitchen table and the board was just one more thing in the cupboard. Kind of regret it as though it wasn’t used often, ironing is definitely easier on a shaped board. Don’t miss it enough to get a new one though.
