Do you iron?

Aibu not to iron? I own an iron somewhere, it’s about 20 years old and may or may not still work. I use it very very occasionally if I’m going out in something that needs ironing.

YABU - ironing is a task that should be done on all clothes

YANBU - ironing should never be done, or only very very occasionally.

I really enjoy ironing. I iron bedding as well as our clothes. Getting into a bed with freshly washed and ironed sheets is one of my greatest pleasures. I listen to audiobooks or watch some nonsense on Netflix while doing it. But I am retired, have few time pressures compared to young working parents and certainly have no opinion on whether other people chose to iron or not. So I can’t answer your AIBU 😊. There are plenty of household jobs I actively avoid though, like cleaning windows!!

NagathaCrispy · 25/06/2025 08:14

Occasionally. I have mostly non-iron clothing and the type of lifestyle that doesn't demand immaculate turn out at all times. Having said that, some things just look and feel better hang been ironed, so I do odd bits as and when.

I have a (weird!!) friend who irons everything - including underwear, socks and her tea towels.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/06/2025 08:14

Yes because otherwise everyone looks like crumpled shit- equally it takes up less space in drawers if things are ironed flat.

i don’t iron sheets or underwear or towels or leggings.

RabbitsRock · 25/06/2025 08:16

Absolutely not! DH is ex Navy so if anything does need ironing, he’s the man. I hate it & am really not skilled at it either.

Norfolklass2428 · 25/06/2025 08:19

Yes I iron, but I absolutely hate doing the ironing with a passion.

Linen, natural fibres, cotton and school polo shirts and shirts etc looks better for running an iron over it.

Do what works for you op.

MIL irons everything and thinks that I am a slovenly sloth, because I do not iron everything.

Coffeeishot · 25/06/2025 08:23

My mum irons everything im.sure that includes underwear and tea towels !

Toucanfusingforme · 25/06/2025 08:25

When the kids were young, ironing was a chore. Now I have the time I quite enjoy it. I love freshly ironed bed clothes. A lot of the people I know who don’t iron are often slightly crumpled looking, even though they don’t think they are! Each to their own, there’s a balance to be had.

ThomasShelbysfagend · 25/06/2025 08:26

If an item of clothing needs to be ironed, I don’t buy it.

I have ironed once in the last 2 years.

vincettenoir · 25/06/2025 08:26

Maybe once every 3 months. A little more in the summer.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 25/06/2025 08:27

It's a summer thing in my house, cotton Ts that really need and iron get it. Usually cheap items. In winter we always have a layer on so I don't bother. For kids I buy a more expensive brand of shirts and polo shirts that never need ironing, the cheaper polos crease badly so the extra money is worth it.

My friend irons everything then constantly complains she has too much work to do, I've stopped being sympathetic to be honest. There is a very obvious resolution to this

ZiggyPlaysGuitarrr · 25/06/2025 08:28

I can only wear cotton and linen and (with the exception of jersey) I can't get away with not ironing most of my clothes. Also DS's school uniform. I do it once a week, although sometimes I ask our cleaner to do it.

okydokethen · 25/06/2025 08:29

I iron school uniform and odd bits that need doing.

Elandelephant · 25/06/2025 08:30

We use a steamer and it's amazing. I also hated ironing. As and when we need things that may be creased, a quick steam and good to go!

Calliopespa · 25/06/2025 08:30

Loveduppenguin · 25/06/2025 07:34

yes…I can absolutely tell the difference between clothes not ironed and clothes that are.

So can I.

Also I couldn’t answer you Aibu op as there is a happy medium: lots of things, but not all, look better with ironing.

I like to wear very natural fibres like linen. I just think they look and feel nicer. So we don’t have loads of synthetic.

Towels are horrible ironed; good quality ironed sheets and pillowcases are bliss.

I also iron teatowels as it’s hygienic and doesn’t take long.

Natsku · 25/06/2025 08:30

My answer is in the middle. I do iron, but I only iron my clothes. I like the feel of ironed t-shirts but if anyone else in my house likes that feel they can bloody well iron their own clothes! (I do iron DS's formal shirts because he's only 7 and I don't trust him with an iron yet and shirts do look terrible unironed but he's only wearing those once a week or so)

Underwear I can grasp but socks???

MidnightPatrol · 25/06/2025 08:32

Some clothes definitely look better for being ironed, and I think it’s good to look sharp at work (in my role anyway).

I do pay someone else to do it for me though. I’m a bit less selective about what I ask her to do, vs what I’d do if I was doing it myself…!

Doggymummar · 25/06/2025 08:35

I have a brilliant industrial steamer as I am an eBay clothes reseller, so I iron pretty much daily. However I do not iron any of my own things. I don't buy anything that needs ironing. Even linen trousers are perfect line dried and put away.

isitmeamithedrama · 25/06/2025 08:35

Never. I don’t even own and iron or ironing board.

i do t dry clothes in the tumble dryer either. I just take then out the machine and given them a vigorous shake then on the line outside or airer if it’s raining. I never look scruffy or crumpled.
I don’t wear, joggers. Leggings or polyester stuff either as suggested by a PP!

I do have a steamer bought for curtains but I have steamed one dress and a kimono thing in the last 3years

Buffypaws · 25/06/2025 08:37

My ex got the iron when we split. I do have an ironing board but it’s in the loft. Have been in the new house about ten months and to be honest I’ve wanted to iron something once but now it’s washed and hung up it seems ok.

MammaDia · 25/06/2025 08:42

Yes, most of our clothes. I don't iron my jersey pj's or my leggings/underwear.

I iron pillowcases and smaller duvet covers as they look and feel nicer after an iron. Super king duvet cover is too big to do!

I don't understand the hate for ironing. I just do it in front of the TV, find it quite peaceful and it makes everything feel so much nicer to wear.

Ritadeeter · 25/06/2025 08:49

I only iron stuff occasionally but bought a steamer and it's so much easier. I would say it's not the best if you've got a lot to do but if I need to do a top before work for example the steamer is perfect!

bumpsadaisy11 · 25/06/2025 08:50

I don’t, my DH does all the ironing

InSpainTheRain · 25/06/2025 08:59

I just iron a few things, DH has a couple of shirts that look better ironed, I iron my work shirts and linen trousers. I never really get the big deal some people make about ironing on MN! I have a good steam iron, good ironing board, it's all accessible, I just take 15 mins to do it (usually on a Sunday morning whilst watching the politics programme on TV). Some people to spend longer thinking about it and putting it off than it would take to do!

Sjb85 · 25/06/2025 09:02

Never have unless absolutely necessary. My partner loves doing it though and can do it really well due to his army days so everything gets ironed now.
