Do you iron?

Aibu not to iron? I own an iron somewhere, it’s about 20 years old and may or may not still work. I use it very very occasionally if I’m going out in something that needs ironing.

YABU - ironing is a task that should be done on all clothes

YANBU - ironing should never be done, or only very very occasionally.

Weddings, funerals and job interviews only.

I do have an iron but got rid of the ironing board. I don't have a drier, all washing is line dried when possible or on an indoor airer when not.

The trick is to take the washing out of the machine ASAP, before creases set in. Give it a good shake, hang it nicely, fold it when it's dry.

YellowGrey · 25/06/2025 07:42

Somewhere between your two choices OP. I iron a few things but not loads.

Flatandhappy · 25/06/2025 07:42

People who need ironed clothes for work in this house do their own, I stopped completely when my youngest was old enough to iron her own school uniform. School uniform was the only thing I did for years.

Dangermoo · 25/06/2025 07:43

No I bloody don't! 😆 There's a hell of a lot more to life than standing sweating over an iron. However, I am single and child free, so easier for me. I don't buy anything that would require ironing.

FuzzyPuffling · 25/06/2025 07:43

As little as possible. More in the summer (thank you, linen clothes), none in the winter.
Everything gets a really good shake before it goes on the line.

MaisieMacabe · 25/06/2025 07:45

I also think people view chores differently.
I like ironing, I like getting clothes snooth and I find it quite a relaxing activity. Others on here obviously find it onerous, so it really depends.

ComtesseDeSpair · 25/06/2025 07:48

No, I’ve never owned an iron since I left home twenty years ago. I wear dresses all the time and most of them are specifically labelled not to iron. Anything that isn’t, gets dry cleaned.

HurdyGurdy19 · 25/06/2025 07:49

I used to spend several hours each week ironing everything for the five of us. Used to watch saved programmes on the Sky box whilst I did it.

Until I yet again found piles of my perfect ironing just shoved in the bottom of the kids' wardrobes.

I stopped ironing there and then. On the very rare occasion that something does need ironing now (usually my son when he's home for the weekend and he's just shoved his clothes into a bag) then I will empty the cleaning cupboard to reach the redundant iron, and he will iron the item(s) on a folded up towel.

Now, we take washing out of the machine, give it a good shake, and hang it in the line, or in the heated airer, or tumble dry it.

I now think ironing deserves the saying "life's too short" 😅

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/06/2025 07:49

I wear mostly natural fibres so my clothes generally need ironing. I also don't like going out all crimpled and creased.

I don't iron any bed linen though, that is insane.

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 25/06/2025 07:50

Yes I iron

Thingamebobwotsit · 25/06/2025 07:50

Depends. Work clothes yes. Anything else it depends on the fabric. I hate using a tumble dryer all year round, plus try and wear natural fibres wherever possible so inevitably some clothing just ends up creased.

BethBynnag86 · 25/06/2025 07:50

Yes,I do iron, but I do wait until I have an unmanageable pile that needs doing before being forced into taking action (aforementioned pile usually comprises approx 80% DH's t-shirts). There's more to be done during the Summer months because I wear a lot of linen.I always iron bedlinen.I also iron nightwear and tea towels.
Last year I bought a steamer which has been a game changer for using on light items dresses, etc.or anything that needs just a light un-creasing after drying on the line.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/06/2025 07:50

I don't iron anyone else's clothes though and only do mine as and when I need to wear them.

NattyFox · 25/06/2025 07:52

Not at all. Dh occasionally irons a shirt if we're going to a wedding or something.

Coffeeishot · 25/06/2025 07:54

No and i specifically don't buy clothes that might need ironed, dh does his own.

If you catch the wash just as its finished hang it up or in the dryer things rarely need ironed.

DryDay · 25/06/2025 07:54

You do whatever works for you.

I iron absolutely everything - bed linen, boxer shorts - but I have the time and I like it.

However I LOATHE gardening and pay someone to come and tidy my garden, even though it’s the size of a postage stamp.

You do you. There’s no right or wrong.

Alltheburpees · 25/06/2025 07:54

It’s a badge of honour on MN to say you never iron anything. Like showering six times a day and changing your towels after every use.
And yes I do iron.

Out of interest what steamer did you buy? I’m thinking of having one up in our walk In wardrobe. I hang most clothing anyway after ironing but sometimes they get squashed and I would like to steam them upstairs rather than run downstairs to iron them again.

Oooh, would you like to swap? I love gardening!

Coffeeishot · 25/06/2025 07:56

I did iron kids clothes when they lived at home.

Same. I line dry, take stuff out of the machine immediately and shake it, etc. but most of my clothes still require ironing! I need to look quite smart for work and I can't imagine not ironing most of my stuff.

Unlike my mum used to do though, I do not iron towels, socks, underwear, etc.

soupyspoon · 25/06/2025 07:57

I gave up ironing for many years, probably about 20 years but then I lost a lot of weight and now wear much nicer clothes and want to look well turned out and a lot of the clothes I wear now are not stretchy or polyestery so they need ironing, sometimes I try to get away with it but look crumpled. I only ever do one side of something however.

whiteroseredrose · 25/06/2025 07:57

YANBU. Each to their own. I no longer iron I just accept that my tops have a few creases but I hide them under a cardigan.

My DH irons work shirts and trousers. He watches TV while he does it and if his programme hasn’t finished when his ironing is done, he does my T shirts too. I only ever do them myself if they are really wrinkled.

I had non iron uniforms for years and have never got back into the habit.

I don’t miss the days of the ironing basket looking at me accusingly while I had a coffee and did the crossword.

Jane958 · 25/06/2025 07:58

I iron. I do not want to look as if I have been dragged through a hedge, backwards!
However, I am not a "serial" ironer - my mother, for example, used to iron socks and knickers/underpants, whereas I just fold these neatly.
I also polish/suede brush shoes regularly.

Delphigirl · 25/06/2025 07:58

Never iron myself. Never ever. Pay someone else to do it.
