Do you iron?

Aibu not to iron? I own an iron somewhere, it’s about 20 years old and may or may not still work. I use it very very occasionally if I’m going out in something that needs ironing.

YABU - ironing is a task that should be done on all clothes

YANBU - ironing should never be done, or only very very occasionally.

Rarely

Maddy70 · 25/06/2025 09:30

I don't iron but recently bought a steamer. Omg it's changed everything. 2 mins and my linen dresses look great !

80smonster · 25/06/2025 09:33

Nope - I read a feature in Cosmopolitan UK mag in the 90s that estimated how many years of women’s lives they spend ironing and thought ‘won’t be fucking doing that’.

24CRZZNKKA · 25/06/2025 09:35

Yes.

Roughly once a week. All the kids clothes and the odd bits for me.

I have tried various washing and drying methods and still find a lot of items look terrible if I don't iron them.

Not sure where I'm going wrong!

Tagyoureit · 25/06/2025 09:36

I don't but looking at some bits coming off the line these days, I think I need to start again.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/06/2025 09:37

No, don’t iron.

Lyra87 · 25/06/2025 09:41

I own an iron, but honestly have used it about a handful of times in the last 7 years (when I moved in with my DH). Hate ironing with a passion, and I avoid buying clothes that need ironing. My DM used to iron underwear (knickers, socks)

Alsoq · 25/06/2025 09:43

I have a fold out craft iron somewhere in the house, for perler bead projects, but I haven’t ironed clothes for probably 15 years, just cba and I don’t care if a T-shirt has a crease in it or whatever.

Calliopespa · 25/06/2025 09:44

I’m learning why so many people look unkempt.

Tbry24 · 25/06/2025 09:45

I’ve not ironed things for about 8 years now but I’ve just bought a new iron and board. Looking forward to the bedding being ironed each week and feeling a bit tidier. I fold my clothes really well after being on the line then go in the airing cupboard where the rest of the family end up creasing them so I always feel a bit scruffy.

Calliopespa · 25/06/2025 09:45

Also people’s drawers must be so untidy if nothing is ironed down.

mindutopia · 25/06/2025 09:45

Nope, don’t own and iron or an ironing board.

We used to have one, when we were still in the wedding era of life. But now everyone is married. We aren’t yet onto 2nd marriages and the next generation is at least 10 years away from any weddings.

Never ironed school uniform or bedding. Dh and I do work that is casual to smart casual, so don’t own any work clothes that need ironing.

I gave the ironing board and iron away before our last house move as didn’t see the point of dragging it with us.

Orangeandpurpletulips · 25/06/2025 09:47

Nah. I'm pretty good at folding, hanging and the like anyway. For items and occasions where ironing actually matters, DH does it.

FlamingoFloss · 25/06/2025 09:47

Foxtrotbeta · 25/06/2025 07:38

I never iron. My husband does his work shirts and then we have a hand held steamer for the couple of linen items and 1 shirt that I own. The steamer is so fast and convenient, highly recommend! If I'm going somewhere smart I might steam a dress as I agree they do look a bit smarter.

What steamer do you have pls @Foxtrotbeta ? ;)

BeachPossum · 25/06/2025 09:47

I personally do not, my husband does all the ironing in our household. I would do some if he wasn't around, but he's much more meticulous than I would be if it were my job. He irons sheets, pyjamas and vests for instance, none of which I would ever bother with.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 25/06/2025 09:48

Some things need to be ironed. It’s not necessary to iron everything.
I iron my son’s school uniform and my work stuff; and the odd bit, here and there,

There’s a nice sweet spot, @fencedispute2024

FlamingoFloss · 25/06/2025 09:48

It’s a no from me

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 25/06/2025 09:48

Ironed bedding looks so nice.

heidyho · 25/06/2025 09:48

6 of us in the house and I work full time. I barely have time to put away the laundry let alone iron it 🤣

WaltzingWaters · 25/06/2025 09:49

Nope. Don’t own an iron. I work a care job and as a SAHM so mainly live in leggings (so maybe I’d feel differently if I were wearing smart office clothing!). But even my dresses and jeans don’t need ironing. DH also has an outdoors shorts and tshirt type job. The only occasions we need an iron is for a wedding and we pop round to SIL’s, but that’s a very rare need!

Growlybear83 · 25/06/2025 09:50

I don’t own any clothes thst don’t need to be ironed, and I don’t like to look crumpled. I iron everything except for underwear.

Crispynoodle · 25/06/2025 09:55

Yes I do all the time! Every day if I can. But then my hobby is making patchwork quilts and I need to iron the fabric (so much so I’ve just bought a smart iron (!) at the cost of £180. Ah you mean clothes! Nah can’t be doing with that carry on! Plus everyone is banned from using my new iron on clothing!

UpsideDownChairs · 25/06/2025 09:57

Didn't use to at all.

Do now, since buying a steam generator iron. I actually find it relaxing standing there and making everything flat and beautiful (pillow cases and tea-towels included).

I hate folding washing, but for some reason, steaming it then folding it is comforting rather than annoying, I feel like I've accomplished something rather than just got the stuff out of the basket and into cupboards.

AmelieSummer25 · 25/06/2025 09:58

Jane958 · 25/06/2025 07:58

I iron. I do not want to look as if I have been dragged through a hedge, backwards!
However, I am not a "serial" ironer - my mother, for example, used to iron socks and knickers/underpants, whereas I just fold these neatly.
I also polish/suede brush shoes regularly.

I don't iron. I also don't look like I've been dragged through a bush backwards thank you! I take care hanging clothes up properly
once they've been washed so they dry nicely & don't need ironing.

Shoth · 25/06/2025 10:04

I don’t own an iron. I don’t buy clothes that look like the need to be ironed, and if on the odd occasion I have bought something that does I never wear it.
