Do you iron?

fencedispute2024 · 25/06/2025 07:29

Aibu not to iron? I own an iron somewhere, it’s about 20 years old and may or may not still work. I use it very very occasionally if I’m going out in something that needs ironing.

YABU - ironing is a task that should be done on all clothes

YANBU - ironing should never be done, or only very very occasionally.

Nope. Never have my entire adult life.

I don't own any linen clothes which crease to buggery.

EastEndQueen · 25/06/2025 07:59

Yes almost everything, except for the small number of items that look fine straight from the line or tumble dryer with a neat fold (pyjamas, sports kits, underwear etc).

I run my own business and need to look smart at work and favour proper shirts, natural fibres etc where you really do notice. I love the feeling of ironed sheets and do everyone’s each week. I don’t mind ironing tbh, I do it after dinner with Netflix on and it stops me snacking.

Make DH do his own shirts though!

isthismylifenow · 25/06/2025 07:59

Everything gets ironed (except towels and underwear).

But I do not do it myself, as my cleaner does all the ironing as well.

For those who say it makes no difference once on, that is just not true. If I spend a good chuck of money on a nice item, I want it to look the best that it can whilst on.

Perhaps because it is something that I am particular about, I notice it immediately on others. I suppose it is possible to be crease blind though.

TheBewleySisters · 25/06/2025 07:59

I iron nothing.

Teenagerantruns · 25/06/2025 08:00

Never . I used to iron school uniform about 15 years ago. Since then the iron is just sitting in a cupboard. I really should get rid or it and ironing board.

MermaidMummy06 · 25/06/2025 08:00

DS's school shirts need it & so do work uniform tops. We were reminded at the last staff meeting it's in our contract to iron them. Recently the shirts they use are no longer available so changing the uniform. I piped up 'iron free, please' to be told the ones we have are apparently iron free!! Can't win!

I avoid ironing anything else but will if it needs it. Looking crumpled is awful.

CatOnAHotRadiator · 25/06/2025 08:00

Not as standard no. I iron on an “as needed” basis. If I’m about to wear a shirt / trousers that hand better and look better pressed then I do them. DH does his own shirts.

ObliviousCoalmine · 25/06/2025 08:00

No. Stopped when my ex husband (an ironing Nazi, despite not doing it himself) left.

Picklechicken · 25/06/2025 08:01

Nope. Can’t stand ironing. To be fair though dh does a very casual job (he can literally wear crocs to work!) and I don’t work, Ds has autism and the school he goes to doesn’t have a school uniform (complex needs), so none of us have clothes that ever need ironing. Maybe if dh or I had to wear a shirt for work I might do. I always choose clothes that are dark (no whites, can’t be bothered to do separate washes), stretch and I just tumble everything and then fold immediately it’s finished which keeps things mostly crease free. Anything I can’t tumble I shake well and hang on a hanger over a door or something,

daffodilandtulip · 25/06/2025 08:01

My child cried one Christmas as she got those beads you iron, and she thought she couldn't use them because she thought we didn't own an iron.

IButtleSir · 25/06/2025 08:02

Absolutely not. I'd far rather have creased clothes and extra time.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 25/06/2025 08:03

Not anymore. I had been doing ironing since living with my nan when I was 13. When the first lockdown started, I was in my mid-40s and thought 'sod this' and haven't done it since.
The older I get, the more I have decided not to do certain things or to let others help a bit.
Life is too short for ironing, unless, of course, you actually enjoy it (which some weird people do!).

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 25/06/2025 08:03

I do a load of washing almost daily and iron everything that comes out except socks and towels. I bloody love it. The bigger the pile the better 😝

Ygfrhj · 25/06/2025 08:03

I used to never iron but I recently started and it makes a huge difference. My clothes look more expensive and just better on when they're ironed.

It also makes sure I actually wear the more wrinkle-prone cotton and linen items that were previously sitting on hangers.

My husband more often irons my stuff when he does his work shirts every weekend.

Started17June2025 · 25/06/2025 08:05

The only thing that gets ironed here regularly is dh's work shirts (which he irons).

I think the last time I ironed something was on Halloween when an Amazon dress up outfit for dc3 turned up particularly creased.

I find it quite an eye opener that a company has to put this into a contract. I assume the company was fed up with staff looking so scruffy that they have had to include it.

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 25/06/2025 08:07

Once in a blue moon.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 25/06/2025 08:07

I’m 36 and have never used an iron in my life.

Ruggerlass · 25/06/2025 08:09

I don’t iron as much as I used too when I used to iron everything. I’ve drastically reduced how much I do and only do what’s absolutely necessary, usually only a few shirts or t-shirts and husband’s hankies (yes he uses cotton hankies).

CiaoMeow · 25/06/2025 08:09

Rarely. DH works and wears shirts which I always used to iron, but now we buy Charles Thyrwitt non-iron instead. Really good. And I might sometimes iron pillow cases if they're really creased, but that's it.

merrymelody · 25/06/2025 08:11

I used to iron. I found it soothing and satisfying but once I split from XH, I was too busy with single parenting to bother.

sonoonetoldyoulifewasgonnabethisway · 25/06/2025 08:11

Only on the golf course

Alltheburpees · 25/06/2025 07:54

It’s a badge of honour on MN to say you never iron anything. Like showering six times a day and changing your towels after every use.
And yes I do iron.

I don't iron. Mostly shower every other day and wash my towels weekly (ish)

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 25/06/2025 08:13

I iron everything including bedding and boxers but I love ironing. Alot of what iron doesn't need it.

Pottedpalm · 25/06/2025 08:13

SchnizelVonKrumm · 25/06/2025 07:39

Not as often as I ought to. Many clothes are fine without but people who think that nothing ever needs ironing are kidding themselves.

I agree; my DC (adult) iron almost nothing. They tell me their clothes don’t need ironing. I disagree!
