To think gestation outside the body is a fab idea

Recent research makes the possibility of gestating a baby outside a woman’s body possible. Do we think this is a good idea or not?

Unethical and abhorrent

Soubriquet · 23/06/2025 18:48

I think it could be good for babies who are premature.

from conception though? I’m not sure.

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 23/06/2025 18:49

Lots of things are possible. Doesn't mean they should be done.

Comedycook · 23/06/2025 18:49

There are seven billion people on the planet....the old fashioned way works wonders.

averylongtimeago · 23/06/2025 18:49

It’s a dreadful idea.

BabyofMine · 23/06/2025 18:49

Disgusting. Babies deserve to be born the way they’re supposed to be, with their mother.

SoapyTW · 23/06/2025 18:50

Awful awful idea. Human trafficking nightmare. Awful for children. Commodification of human life on a mass scale. A hard no.

MidnightPatrol · 23/06/2025 18:51

Given pregnant women are not allowed to do all manner of things because of the potential risk (usually based on ‘we don’t know if it’s bad as we have never tested it as it’s not ethical’) to the foetus, I’m amazed that an external womb is deemed safe or ethical.

Poetnojo · 23/06/2025 18:52

Sounds like the stuff of nightmares

Hedonism · 23/06/2025 18:54

Poor babies 😥

ExitPursuedByABare · 23/06/2025 18:55

How lovely. They can be grown in a laboratory.

🙄

FortyElephants · 23/06/2025 18:56

Prenatal attachment is important to babies. This would lead to children with serious emotional development issues.

Throughahedgebackwards · 23/06/2025 18:58

Horrific idea.

RobinHeartella · 23/06/2025 18:59

Instead of being used to the sound of their mothers' heartbeat and tummy gurgles, and voice, they'll be used to the sound of beeping machines.

Both of mine, as babies, loved leaning their head on my tummy. Babies love the tummy gurgle sound because they're so used to it.

Or instead of beeping machines, will they play political slogans to the unborn babies? Brave New World should be compulsory reading...

Pinkrosesyellowroses · 23/06/2025 19:00

Sounds like the world of The Pod Generation movie just got a step closer to reality.

MsNevermore · 23/06/2025 19:00

I joked about it in all of my pregnancies - I have horrible pregnancies but a really easy time giving birth…..I used to joke that I’d happily pop out a newborn-sized egg at the beginning and incubate it like a chicken.

But the idea of artificial wombs etc actually becoming reality all seems a bit too “mad scientist” for my liking. Also seems like an ethical minefield too….so it’s a no from me.

Hoardasurass · 23/06/2025 19:00

@Allotmentblackfly have you any idea of the risks and harms caused to women going through egg retrieval.
This is a terrible idea and should be banned in the same way cloning a human is

SilenceInside · 23/06/2025 19:00

I doubt it. And it's a very bad idea.

LornaSaysYes · 23/06/2025 19:01

Great for premature babies, otherwise incredibly dystopian.
Maybe we should all just outsource everything that makes us human and plug ourselves into Matrix pods, or those euthanasia pods for that matter- why stretch it out?

myplace · 23/06/2025 19:04

I’ve begun to see this as an attempt not to relieve women of physical suffering, but to sideline women from the business of babies. Trying to get around women’s gatekeeping of baby making.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 23/06/2025 19:05

I read a sci fi book once , the premise was the planet was underpopulated and at war so they started growing genetically modified babies in pods, so they whizz through childhood to become soldiers. The first generations all turned out as psychopathic murderers as they had grown them in a research facility where they had been in pods and grown in a dark, silent void.

Later generations were exposed to light and sound and had to hunt down the crazy ones.

It does make me wonder how what you are exposed to in the womb effects brain development. For example babies like to sleep on chests as the sound of their mothers heartbeat is a comfort, they know her voice, her smell. Do you replace that with a rythmic whoosh and play sounds of the genetic parents?

Anzena · 23/06/2025 19:07

Was this proposed by transwomen?

ChoccieCornflake · 23/06/2025 19:07

Anyone got a link to this recent research?

This.

Notyomama · 23/06/2025 19:08

Men really really need to do something about their envy of women.
