To dislike shirtless men in public places

With the exception of the beach and (maybe) sunbathing in the park.

I'm an athlete (using the definition broadly) and mix with a lot of athletes, so the men in this context are in pretty good shape. I still think they should keep their shirts on and not e.g. run in the street with their shirts off!

I can't say why exactly, except that I don't like it, even when they're nice to look at 😂

I think it stems from the fact we can't do it. We will be arrested. So it comes across as a power move on their part.

They might as well be gorillas banging their chests.

Coffeeishot · 23/06/2025 13:18

I agree its unnecessary and even if they are in good shape just put a t shirt on. Funnily enough a shirtless runner ran around me the other day and a bit of sweat flew off him onto me it was gross 🤢

IllustratedDictionaryOfTheDoldrums · 23/06/2025 13:19

Doesn't bother me at all, but I grew up in a hot country where it wasn't so unusual to see. But I'm not bothered by bodies generally.

MariLlwyd · 23/06/2025 13:19

Beach and park no problem. Everywhere else absolutely not.
I actually shamed a shirtless tourist bloke in our village shop - and he just stood there gaping. Too funny.

Oh. Maybe that is it. It is the kind of thing that would get me riled.

If it's hot what's the problem with dressing for the weather? When did we all become so uptight?

Woodworm2020 · 23/06/2025 13:22

I agree, I hate it too, I can’t event articulate why but I just do!

Thedevilwearsprimarni · 23/06/2025 13:22

I wouldn't mind someone running (for exercise, not away from the popo). But men in general wondering around with no shirt on makes me feel a bit gross.

It's never so hot that you need to be topless.

What on earth did you say to him?!

SillyMillie90 · 23/06/2025 13:23

Me and DP go to Greece at least every other year. Every time we go in a shop or supermarket the cashiers will initially talk to DP in Greek. It’s apparently because male tourists walk in shirtless and he puts a tshirt on 🤷‍♀️

Bananafofana · 23/06/2025 13:24

@Optimustime that’s a great point and given me pause for thought. I don’t like it either not because I don’t like bodies but it just seems so in your face (say) walking down a residential street. A power move and one women can’t make.

taptaroundtheworld · 23/06/2025 13:24

Same as women with crop tops, half their boobs out or skirts with cheeks on display.
Don’t like it, but i just look the other way.
Their bodies, their choices

A quick Google would suggest that you can do it. At least, it doesn't appear to be illegal.

Bananafofana · 23/06/2025 13:28

@steff13 women could be prosecuted under the common law offence of outraging public decency. I’m a solicitor (though this is most certainly not my specialist area and I don’t work for CPS!).

I think it is only illegal if it bothers someone else !

MauriceTheMussel · 23/06/2025 13:30

It’s just never that bloody hot though, is it?

Evidenced by the fact women aren’t walking around topless because the heat has us in a death grip.

But only if their intent is to cause harm or distress correct?

Oh, we had this on the naked bike ride thread! If the woman isn’t intentionally trying to harm or offend (or some such), the baps out are fine!

Echomama · 23/06/2025 13:31

I think it's all about context.
I wouldn't bat an eye if my husband or any man or woman for that matter walked around with a top off. It happens regularly here out in the sticks in a country that does get an actual summer (females only as the beach usually, but not uncommon to have just a crop or tank with no bra)
Shops on beach fronts, sure why not.
Working out, sure.
But to wander around the UK in a town or even a busy tourist village with your top off just seems impolite. Especially walking into a shop that is something like a grocery store, no thanks. I feel awkward enough when I have to nip in while wearing a bikini and a dress over the top on the way to or from a pool/beach.

Indianajet · 23/06/2025 13:23

What on earth did you say to him?!

Just that it was basic hygiene and good manners to wear a top in a food shop. 😀😁

nomas · 23/06/2025 13:33

Yep, don't want to be seeing their chests. The worst is one they wear a low cut shirt to show their pecs / cleavage.

When's the last you walked shirtless in the street?

Meandmyguy · 23/06/2025 13:37

Honestly, who cares in the grand scheme of things.

Uptight no.
Decorum yes.
