To dislike shirtless men in public places

With the exception of the beach and (maybe) sunbathing in the park.

I'm an athlete (using the definition broadly) and mix with a lot of athletes, so the men in this context are in pretty good shape. I still think they should keep their shirts on and not e.g. run in the street with their shirts off!

I can't say why exactly, except that I don't like it, even when they're nice to look at 😂

I don’t like it, I find it a bit much.

Whiteframe · 23/06/2025 13:55

nomas · 23/06/2025 13:33

Yep, don't want to be seeing their chests. The worst is one they wear a low cut shirt to show their pecs / cleavage.

Edited

Maybe that's it, I just makes me a bit uncomfortable and I don't know where to look. Perhaps I should have more sympathy for men faced with women in low cut tops 😂

Of course the answer is just not to look. I'm not hoping to change the world, just pondering on my response to it.

Beach and park no problem. Everywhere else absolutely not.
I actually shamed a shirtless tourist bloke in our village shop - and he just stood there gaping. Too funny.

I'm not surprised he just stood there gawping. He probably thought you were bonkers. 😆 I imagine most people would just stare, shake their head, or burst out laughing if some random commented on their outfit. Or do what I would do and utterly ignore them.

@Whiteframe YANBU to not want to see shirtless men, but I honestly fon't care. What other people wear - or don't wear - doesn't matter to me, or affect me.

comeandhaveteawithme · 23/06/2025 13:57

I don't like it either. I see it a lot with tradesmen working on properties when they weather is hot. It just feels so unprofessional.

Why is that bonkers? Most shops require people to be dressed.

To be fair, I don't like any cleavage 😂

It's something about the gap between the pecs/breasts on the breastplate. I do have ADHD sensory issues though!

I really dislike seeing women wrapped up in voluminous clothing that covers their heads in public places. It makes me feel very claustrophobic, I find it triggering. So I have to say I breathe a huge sigh of relief that we give people the freedom to go topless or wear shorts and vests in public, I love the freedom they have and want to value and protect that freedom.

Why not freedom for all? If a woman wants to cover up, that's her choice.

When's the last you walked shirtless in the street?

It's not something I do walking down the street but when it's really hot I do walk down the street in comfortable clothing even if it's not the most flattering.

But this is about men walking shirtless, not in comfortable clothing, which would be fine.

Wearing just shorts and no top in 30+ degree heat is comfortable clothing.

Creu · 23/06/2025 14:05

It’s rank.

MauriceTheMussel · 23/06/2025 13:30

It’s just never that bloody hot though, is it?

Evidenced by the fact women aren’t walking around topless because the heat has us in a death grip.

It must be very hot on weekend nights near here, many young women are almost completely naked walking around the place. No one seems to object though.

There's no clothing on the chest though, which is the point of the thread.

You do not see men dressed like that in hot African countries though.

taptaroundtheworld · 23/06/2025 14:10

@KimberleyClark you also don’t see many women in tiny miniskirts and a bra in hot African countries where men are covered up.
If you don’t like it, don’t look.

claireismyname · 23/06/2025 14:11

Yabu. The days when people could tell women how to dress and what to wear and where to breastfeed are over. Same rights should apply to men. Get with the times.

Openthisdoor · 23/06/2025 14:12

Thedevilwearsprimarni · 23/06/2025 13:22

I wouldn't mind someone running (for exercise, not away from the popo). But men in general wondering around with no shirt on makes me feel a bit gross.

It's never so hot that you need to be topless.

You might feel differently about that if you saw the pics on Facebook of my local park run of a 60+ year old man, overweight, running with his top off. Only a man would think this was ok.

Gepl · 23/06/2025 14:14

I honestly can’t say I give a shit, nor do I see it that often.

I see the odd runner with no shirt on a hot day. They run past, that’s the end of that.

I don’t think shirt off in the shops or in the pub is a good look, but it’s really not that common.

MariLlwyd · 23/06/2025 13:39

Uptight no.
Decorum yes.

Agree, my dad used to do it, I’d be so embarrassed. I associate it with rough behaviour , it’s I assume designed so you get a maximum suntan .

Masmavi · 23/06/2025 14:15

Agree. Unnecessary, inappropriate - there’s a time and a place for everything and 2pm in a supermarket isn’t the place to peel your top off, for instance. And it’s really never that hot in the UK that you can’t survive at least wearing a vest.

MauriceTheMussel · 23/06/2025 14:15

That’s apples and oranges.

Women dressed for a night out is an entirely different context and time of day than what the OP is talking about. I’ve never seen a woman topless in Sainsbos in the daytime like some men are. I’ve never seen a woman out for a run topless either.

IButtleSir · 23/06/2025 14:17

I hate seeing strange men's nipples. It's just not a body part that should ever be forced upon people's eyes. I will happily make an exception for breastfeeding women in the brief seconds it takes to get the baby on and off the breast, but men have no need to get their nipples out in public.

tripleginandtonic · 23/06/2025 14:17

taptaroundtheworld · 23/06/2025 13:24

Same as women with crop tops, half their boobs out or skirts with cheeks on display.
Don’t like it, but i just look the other way.
Their bodies, their choices

This.

But women ARE told they have to cover their nipples in public. Why shouldn't men be told the same?
