To dislike shirtless men in public places

With the exception of the beach and (maybe) sunbathing in the park.

I'm an athlete (using the definition broadly) and mix with a lot of athletes, so the men in this context are in pretty good shape. I still think they should keep their shirts on and not e.g. run in the street with their shirts off!

I can't say why exactly, except that I don't like it, even when they're nice to look at 😂

Fairyliz · 23/06/2025 17:34

Urgh no. The only men who I see without tops are the flabby, hairy, sweaty ones with moobs.
Yes I know I could look away, but it’s hard to avoid when you are looking where you are going to avoid being knocked into the road.

LondonLady1980 · 23/06/2025 17:49

I’m all for topless men wandering around the streets if they have a nice body!

gannett · 23/06/2025 18:02

MN's disgust at the human body really knows no bounds. Same energy here as on the scrunch bum leggings and thong swimming costume threads. I have no idea how any of you apparently managed to raise children through the notoriously hygienic baby and toddler years? My parent friends talk about poo and vomit with such ease that surely an adult nipple or buttock barely raises an eyebrow.

I appreciate a shirtless man in public with a nice body - mostly runners. As a runner who wears as little as possible in the summer myself, I don't begrudge anyone going topless. If I encounter a man with a less-toned body, I simply look away and move on with my day. Other people are not there for my sexual or aesthetic pleasure - this is something I used to tell men off for thinking ("why is she wearing a crop top when she has a belly" etc) and it's shocking that I have to apparently tell a bunch of middle-aged women the same thing.

Whilst it’s not illegal for women to do it, it would be frowned upon, and also I think it would leave us very vulnerable!

So perhaps the power move is that no one is gone to harass them?

There is a power element to it that I can’t pin down!

Regardless, I don’t like it either. It seems a bit intimate in a way?

I also just have Final Destination visions of clipping a nipple in the newsagent’s doorframe or something

I agree with you on the power thing. It’s a bit “look at what we can do! The space we can take up! And now we have conquered your field of vision! Look away to liberate yourself”…but then that wouldn’t be liberation

gerispringer · 23/06/2025 18:09

Horrible and it’s not really “dressed for the weather” is it? It’s not cooler to strip off than wear a light shirt which will actually protect you from the sun. You don’t see men stripped off in Milan or Rome, apart from British tourists.

heartsinvisiblefury · 23/06/2025 18:12

It’s the fact that if I get hot as a woman that I can’t just take my top off that pisses me off.

iriswillow · 23/06/2025 18:12

My dad used to do this … hated it! YANBU.

TwistedWonder · 23/06/2025 18:24

I was dating a guy for a couple of months and we were in the beer garden of a lovely pub and he took his shirt off.
One of the barmen came over and asked him to put it back on as it was against their policy and he argued with him.

It gave me the ick so bad that was last time I saw him.

Greenartywitch · 23/06/2025 18:44

I lived on the island of Corsica for a few years.

It gets a lot of tourists in the summer and it gets very hot there.

All the shops, restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets and so on all have notices that customers will not be admitted on the premises if they are wearing swimsuits or if the men are topless.

It is just common courtesy.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 23/06/2025 18:48

I don't like it either, in fact I absolutely hate when men go around shirtless, but I also can't stand when women go around almost naked. of course if people say this on here there would be a pile on because women are allowed do what they want right? Someone said upthread it's totally different to what women wear going out at the weekend, but that just begs the question, would it be for men to be shirtless on a Saturday night in a pub? If not then why not? Women may not be 'allowed' show nipples but they can show anything else. The other night I saw many girls with shorts half way up their bum, literally butt cheeks purposely on display. If those shirtless men put their shirts back on and showed us their buttocks instead would that be more or less offensive? Should girls with massive thighs and rolls of fat on their belly be told to cover up and only the attractive ones show off their bodies or is it OK for all women to show off their bodies. My point of course is that we generally allow women much more liberties in how they dress, we don't put restrictions on them depending on their weight. So I think its wrong to say men shouldn't be allowed show skin unless the same standards apply for women.

buffyajp · 23/06/2025 17:29

No we won’t bloody give over. It is ageism and body shaming. You don’t get to dictate what others wear. Don’t look. It’s not hard, I manage it just fine.

Yes exactly - you don’t get to dictate. What I think about a man who is arrogant enough to not consider anybody else but take his top off whilst every other runner manages to keep theirs on, is my business and again, I don’t want to see it! and you can tantrum as much as you like about it, but it won’t change my opinion.

Cynic17 · 23/06/2025 18:51

Agreed. It's vile, and very unattractive. You would never see it in, say, Italy, which generally has much warmer summers than the UK.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/06/2025 18:59

Also - it’s not a good idea! You will burn. And also, you’re much cooler in a loose fitting, light coloured top or shirt in a natural material.

Tedsnan1 · 23/06/2025 19:04

It's grim. I can't articulate why I feel this way, I just do.

Disturbia81 · 23/06/2025 19:09

I walked past someone with no shirt on in a shopping centre the other day, and I said “no-one wants to see that” as I went past, he shot me a dirty look 🤣

missmollygreen · 23/06/2025 19:20

Optimustime · 23/06/2025 13:18

I think it stems from the fact we can't do it. We will be arrested. So it comes across as a power move on their part.

They might as well be gorillas banging their chests.

ONly on MN could someone describe a man with no shirt on as a power move. FFS lol
Victim complex much?

OP, do you think the same when you see a woman walking around in a bikini top?

Toddlerteaplease · 23/06/2025 19:43

It’s just grim.

Petitchat · 22/11/2025 03:00

Thedevilwearsprimarni · 23/06/2025 13:22

I wouldn't mind someone running (for exercise, not away from the popo). But men in general wondering around with no shirt on makes me feel a bit gross.

It's never so hot that you need to be topless.

Yeah, i agree. A nice vest or tee shirt is loads better.
Ugh....

echt · 22/11/2025 05:10

It's grim, and until recently not a thing in my part of Australia. The recent thing has been men running down the beach road, appropriately called Beach Road with no top on. Without exception they are all very fit, but it's still boak-inducing. Cover up, ya nong.

Mokel · 22/11/2025 06:46

I do not like men with massive beer bellies going shirtless.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 22/11/2025 06:49

What i hate is people sitting in bars/restaurants at the beach with no tops on or just in a bikini or swimsuit with no cover up. Firstly I don't want to be sitting in a sweat sodden chair, and secondly I don't want to see that when I'm eating a meal or having a drink.

I agree. I can’t stave it when people go straight from the beach or pool onto the restaurant and sit eating in their swimwear.
How much effort does it really take to put on a coverup or a T-shirt?

I really don’t want to be sitting opposite someone eating lunch in morning but budgie smugglers

Thankyourose · 22/11/2025 09:17

Oh to have the confidence of the completely average man! I agree OP! My boss has his SM filled with pics of himself shirtless… Bleurgh….
he runs and climbs things and takes endless selfies and ones I don’t follow hisnSM but the office staff delight in showing the updates around… running all sweaty with his shirt tucked in his shorts.

Context matters:

I'm perfectly comfortable with nakedness in the right place - changing nappies, bathing children, alone with husband, bathing elderly/sick relatives, helping injured friend get dressed.

I'd rather people dressed decently when in public.

Redpeach · 22/11/2025 09:34

I don t mind it, but what i do hate, is men with their hands down their trousers in publc
