To dislike shirtless men in public places

With the exception of the beach and (maybe) sunbathing in the park.

I'm an athlete (using the definition broadly) and mix with a lot of athletes, so the men in this context are in pretty good shape. I still think they should keep their shirts on and not e.g. run in the street with their shirts off!

I can't say why exactly, except that I don't like it, even when they're nice to look at 😂

@KimberleyClark you also don’t see many women in tiny miniskirts and a bra in hot African countries where men are covered up.
If you don’t like it, don’t look.

I was querying whether it really is necessary to remove your shirt to be comfortable in extreme heat. I always find the more skin I expose the hotter and more uncomfortable I get. Loose cotton clothing is best.

taptaroundtheworld · 23/06/2025 14:21

@Openthisdoor body shaming now…. so should elderly people/anyone with less than perfect bodies now cover up completely?
Just look somewhere else - maybe in the mirror?

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 23/06/2025 14:05

Wearing just shorts and no top in 30+ degree heat is comfortable clothing.

What happened to the sun safe message? Plus its it's actually cooler to have a light, loose covering in direct sun. There aren't too many male torsos that I want to see close up, thanks.

Oh give it a rest… It’s totally inappropriate and no I certainly don’t want to be looking at that!

Thedevilwearsprimarni · 23/06/2025 14:29

@Openthisdoor yeah, I have to admit I was kind of picturing sculpted, athletic types. I don't want to see my own fat belly, never mind anyone elses.

Exactly - I wouldn’t inflict my middle aged naked torso on anybody at my local park run!

HRTQueen · 23/06/2025 14:43

its gross seeing sweaty hairy men with their tops off

in other countries where it gets much hotter they manage not to do this

its slobby

MauriceTheMussel · 23/06/2025 14:59

Yknow what? Let them have their tops off. Let Darwin play out. The sooner they get badly sunburned the better!

momager1 · 23/06/2025 15:00

we live in a very hot climate year round, lowest temp is usually middle of night around 24 or so. Days can be anything from 28 to 32. My husband is shirtless in the house and in our garden always, but never goes out front or out in car without a shirt. It is just not the done thing here.

Newgirls · 23/06/2025 15:01

Optimustime · 23/06/2025 13:18

I think it stems from the fact we can't do it. We will be arrested. So it comes across as a power move on their part.

They might as well be gorillas banging their chests.

This ^^ 💯

they do it to parade, show off etc. it’ll cooler to wear a t shirt so that’s not the motivation

TwistedWonder · 23/06/2025 15:06

Beach, park yes

supermarket, high street - no

I remember seeing a group of topless men in my local Tesco metro and just thinking it’s a bit grim to not even put on a shirt to walk into a shop.

It does all come across a bit Neanderthal imo

Though I’ve just returned from Greece and saw a very hirsute local (I presume) man in Speedo’s and flip flops in a supermarket!

Proper put me off my lunch

Eww

not sure it would put me off a Greek lunch for long ... I love Greek salad and grilled lamb and chips

JustASmallBear · 23/06/2025 16:59

Makes me want to heave.

Zov · 23/06/2025 17:02

Ditto to what @HRTQueen said... About the hirsuit man. I find hairy men really quite grim. 😖I don't want someone bald all over and super smooth, but very hairy men make my skin crawl! Like these 2. boak!

As a woman I would love to not have to wear a top!

HelenCurlyBrown · 23/06/2025 17:05

Me too. It’s my pettiest peeve.

Our closest shop is a co-op on a not very nice estate <sniffs>. In warm weather, you can be guaranteed to see a topless puny white bloke with a bright white torso, tattoos and a sunburned neck standing in the queue. Yuck x1000.

In contrast, we spend a lot of time in Florida. You would simply never see a man shopping without a shirt, it’s just unthinkable.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 23/06/2025 17:07

Yes, sweaty half naked bodies in the shop or walking around is not a good look.
Maybe they're hopeful that the women will follow their look too.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 23/06/2025 17:13

Bang on. I HATE it. Men should be self aware enough not to do it, so if I see a shirtless man in the street I know exactly his type. The bottom line is, men can go topless in public places without a problem but women can't. Why? The patriarchy, my friend. Shame I had to get to my 50's to open my eyes enough to get pissed off about it.

That much hair would put me off my lunch 😑

I agree men should have the self awareness to grasp this isn't what the vast majority people want to see

But they just don't have to be do they, or so many believe 😡

buffyajp · 23/06/2025 17:28

Openthisdoor · 23/06/2025 14:12

You might feel differently about that if you saw the pics on Facebook of my local park run of a 60+ year old man, overweight, running with his top off. Only a man would think this was ok.

Nice body shaming there as well as ageism. Personally I would think good for you for trying to do something about your health. Attitudes like yours is what puts me off running. You don’t like shirtless men fine but there is no need to bring age and size into it.

buffyajp · 23/06/2025 17:29

Openthisdoor · 23/06/2025 14:28

No we won’t bloody give over. It is ageism and body shaming. You don’t get to dictate what others wear. Don’t look. It’s not hard, I manage it just fine.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/06/2025 17:32

Whilst it’s not illegal for women to do it, it would be frowned upon, and also I think it would leave us very vulnerable!

So perhaps the power move is that no one is gone to harass them?

There is a power element to it that I can’t pin down!

Regardless, I don’t like it either. It seems a bit intimate in a way?

Charlize43 · 23/06/2025 17:32

I have great tits! It's such a shame that more people can't see them.

I'm 58 and they still look great.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/06/2025 17:33

I don’t like seeing men’s armpit hair, unless I’m in a relationship with them. I also can’t put my finger on why.

Almost if they have to get their armpits out they should shave them!
