My niece is marrying in October. Her day - her rules . But aibu to be a bit shocked at the dress code ? We are all to wear black and only black. No hats. No fascinators. No flowers in our hair. No coloured shoes or handbags. And wait for it - no nail polish. She wants a monochrome wedding.

Guests can always decline.

They can . And I would. Doesn't make it any less of a twatty thing to do as a couple getting married.

Well apparently they don’t, or there wouldn’t be a thread. Everyone is wearing black to this wedding!

Yes. I am aware of that.
I am responding to the above posters "societal norms" remark.

Flashahah · 22/06/2025 20:04

Don’t be silly that’s societal norms and would not have been written in the invitation!

Sane as don’t wear a long veil!

Check out the Style and Beauty section. You’ll find loads of people asking if you can wear black to a wedding.

I think these type of wedding dress codes are impressively rude and indicative of poor hosting skills, but I'd be very tempted to go along if I was ever invited to one, just to see what other awful social honkers the B&G have come up with.

True, although there was a bit of a strange one where people hadn't heard the "don't wear white" thing.
Weddings, eh? Trouble.

Ah well, we will never know as none of my friends are twats like this! All the many weddings I've been to and very much enjoyed have been about everyone having a nice day. Not about how everyone looks.

DontReplyIWillLie · 22/06/2025 20:17

Ilovepastafortea · 22/06/2025 17:07

With white shirt & black tie. NOT a black shirt.

So buy one from Primark for a fiver.

BebbanburgIsMine · 22/06/2025 17:30

It’s not an easy request if you don’t wear black.

I have no black clothes, no black shoes, no black shoes, no black anything!

I just wouldn’t go.

No black shoes and no black shoes? Gosh. 🥺

But they were important enough to be invited…

No everyone has been asked to wear black..

Time will tell if that actually happens.

You know Aunt Ann, may just rock up
in her fuchsia number with matching nails and say “I didn’t think that black applied to me, what would you like me to do?”

Afewtimesagain · 22/06/2025 20:31

I'd be temped to go with no present and no attendance.
Some brides these days are dictators.

Pessismistic · 22/06/2025 20:56

IT might be her day but she is ott thinking she can dictate about nail polish these brides are getting worse why are they so obsessed about telling people what to wear as it is your niece I would be saying I’m not coming to you wedding it’s a joke that she is dictating so much. Honestly I wouldn’t bother or ignore her rules.

SusanChurchouse · 22/06/2025 21:26

I’ve never been to a wedding with a formal dress code and this one sounds bonkers. Fucking Instagram. Bet my patchy baldy post chemo head would ruin her aesthetic more than a fascinator! 😂

sweetpickle2 · 22/06/2025 21:46

I’m genuinely amazed so many people don’t own any black clothing, I thought everyone did! Every day’s a school day.

Me too. I reckon about 99% of the population will have black clothes, shoes and bags in their wardrobe.
I'm half French though and grew up in France and pretty much everyone wears black so maybe that's why I think so.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 22/06/2025 16:28

What are you eating?
Black pudding, brunt toast, Black Forest Gateaux with Black Currants?
Honeymoon in Blackpool?

And what about the music? Will it be Back to Black, Black is Black, Black Night or even Black or White? 😂

Blinky21 · 22/06/2025 22:06

I'd be thrilled, really easy to get an outfit for

I've lost a load of weight. My one black dress would fall off on my way to my seat. I have black underwear though so at least would still be within the dress code.

Jonesboot · 22/06/2025 22:10

It's a shame about the nail varnish and hats etc, but how about channelling Stevie Nicks?

If we’re talking all black, I have a pair of leggings and a black polo neck. I wear coloured clothing over them. I hate being head to toe in black, makes me feel really gloomy. My dress shoes are leopard print.

Trovindia · 22/06/2025 22:15

I would go for malicious compliance with this and go full on Goth with black make up, platform boots, leather waist corset, tiered lace skirt, the whole thing.

I never wear black as it looks terrible on me so if I had to buy stuff...

BugBugTheTornado · 22/06/2025 22:22

Well, that’d be me rocking up in an electric blue wig, just to be a knob.
