My niece is marrying in October. Her day - her rules . But aibu to be a bit shocked at the dress code ? We are all to wear black and only black. No hats. No fascinators. No flowers in our hair. No coloured shoes or handbags. And wait for it - no nail polish. She wants a monochrome wedding.

Black I can live with, it's easy

I am not sure I could gather the energy to figure out what to wear for a theme "garden party" or "funky fresh formal" or blue outfit with bright pink Ostrich feather nonsense.

How will you manage if you ever go to a funeral?

To be fair, many people don't wear black to funerals. You can be respectful but navy/ grey and similar are perfectly acceptable.

I wouldn't wear the same black dress for funeral or wedding either personally. Not the same style.

Blueballoon02 · 22/06/2025 16:44

Can I be honest? Sounds like an Instagram wedding but… I’d just go with it and would happily wear a black dress if that’s what they want.

But no nail polish! Is insane… that’s the bit that made me laugh

CharlotteStreetW1 · 22/06/2025 16:44

Well I'd go because it's my niece and I love my nieces dearly but it would be a shame as I try to look my best at weddings and black makes me look dead. I also love wearing hats and would very sad not to be allowed to wear one.

JSMill · 22/06/2025 16:45

Omg the photos will look terrible.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 22/06/2025 16:48

Sorry this is such comedy. I need to go for a lie down.

SapporoBaby · 22/06/2025 16:49

I doubt people are going to remove their gel nails for her wedding so she will be disappointed

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 22/06/2025 16:28

What are you eating?
Black pudding, brunt toast, Black Forest Gateaux with Black Currants?
Honeymoon in Blackpool?

😂😂😂

My friend had a black and white wedding about 13 years ago. No extreme rules about hats and nail polish, just a black and white dress code. Her dress was white with a large black sash and she looked amazing.

Didnt see anything wrong with it.

angelinawasrobbed · 22/06/2025 16:55

Most blacks look grey in colour photos taken in daylight. And all the blacks will look very different when seen together, depending on fabric.

Ilovepastafortea · 22/06/2025 16:56

I'm afraid that I'm the auntie/cousin who will go my own way & wear what I want. What's she going to do? Throw me out?

There's an old adage 'Married in Black, you'll wish yourself back'.

Sod that. I don't have anything suitable in black (I'm very fair & black isn't good for me), but the closest I could get to would be grey.

RandomMess · 22/06/2025 16:57

Turn up on trackies, hoodie & y-shirt obviously in black.

I look dreadful wearing black.

Suednymph · 22/06/2025 16:57

Her wedding, her rules. If you do not want to comply just do not go. That said my nails would be painted black too. I never have bare nails.

I think your attitude is a lot worst than being a bridezilla. Do you need to bring all the attention to yourself, do you want to make a scene?

Why bother? Just don't go. You would just be showing the world you are rude and obnoxious. Why would you want that?

Fairyliz · 22/06/2025 16:58

Blimey I went to a funeral last week and the wife of the deceased asked us not to wear black as it would too depressing. She wanted to celebrate her husband’s life.
Black at a wedding sounds really miserable.

How many men own a black suit and a black shirt? Not many I imagine.

Don't men wear black suits to funerals

JustPinkFinch · 22/06/2025 16:59

Remind her that no one really cares that much about her nuptials - it's an insignificant speck in most people's calendars - and she needs to wind her neck in if she wants people to attend.

Or just don't attend. I will take any excuse to get out of something like this - and this is a good one!

Usually only a plain black tie with a standard suit in navy or grey.

TeenLifeMum · 22/06/2025 17:02

It’s an Instagram trend. The black dresses were all evening dresses in the one I saw and looked very stylish so quite different to a funeral. I think north American wedding dress code tends to be more evening dress than in the uk (my brother’s Canadian mil wore a beautiful evening gown to their wedding but looked a bit bridesmaid but I’ve since discovered that’s normal in North America). It’s not what I would choose but I don’t think it’s that outrageous a request.

Ilovepastafortea · 22/06/2025 17:02

I don't get all this focus on the wedding. They have Hen & Stag weekends abroad, dress codes, etc.

The wedding is just one day. I get it that they want nice photos, but, after 38 years of marriage they will be mostly replaced with photos of the children & grandchildren. It's the marriage that's important not the wedding.

Surely all men ( apart from poor ones) own a black suit.

Not many do. Most wear dark grey or dark blue.

DisforDarkChocolate · 22/06/2025 17:03

I look like death in all black, that'll ruin her aesthetic.

Ilovepastafortea · 22/06/2025 17:04

But a black shirt has negative connotations. My DH would never buy or wear a black shirt as affiliated with fascists.

My DH only has a black suit
