My niece is marrying in October. Her day - her rules . But aibu to be a bit shocked at the dress code ? We are all to wear black and only black. No hats. No fascinators. No flowers in our hair. No coloured shoes or handbags. And wait for it - no nail polish. She wants a monochrome wedding.

Go full Morticia.
I dare you.

Redpeach · 22/06/2025 19:18

Why not just lean in to the weirdness - just this once

ifIwerenotanandroid · 22/06/2025 19:19

Over-prescriptive dress codes are rather uptight and tiresome. And guests wearing all black could risk Adam’s Family style photos.

Please, please, OP, dress up as members of the Addams family for the wedding.

I hate this new trend of dictating what guests are allowed to wear. When I got married it was don’t wear white or black but anything else goes.
I don’t really wear black, I have no formal black dresses- I would be really pissed off at having to buy a plain black dress to wear once

thebrollachan · 22/06/2025 19:27

One of my children had a Halloween wedding and it was great! The brides both wore black as well.

Go on - lean right into it.

SecondVerseSameAsThe1st · 22/06/2025 19:29

This calls for a zebra striped dress with red polka dot shoes.

WitcheryDivine · 22/06/2025 19:30

Is it funeral themed and she and groom are going to pop out of a giant sarcophagus? Could be fun.

RichHolidayPoorHoliday · 22/06/2025 16:30

I don't think it's even that deep, it's likely just for the photos to put on social media, and to blow up to put on their living room wall 😂

Haven't they heard of black and white photos?😂

Dymaxion · 22/06/2025 19:38

TBH as a fat old skint bird, this is my dream wedding Grin

MarySueSaidBoo · 22/06/2025 19:41

A family friend recently had a black themed wedding. Only the wedding was hastily arranged at a register office because one of the parents is terminally ill and isn't expected to be around for their main wedding. I think they're going to deeply regret the choice personally, as the photographs look like a funeral rather than a happy vibrant occasion that they desperately tried to make it into. And the parent in black looks dreadfully drawn and unwell because black outfit. I have no idea what goes through people's heads at times...

Hmm...how many of her guests will comply, do you think? I would be tempted to bend the rules significantly...

Why? Why be a complete arse at the wedding of someone you supposedly love?

Your niece needs to give her head a wobble. If one is not in the bridal party then wear what the hell you feel comfortable in. Can’t your sibling have a word?

I personally never wear all black outfits, ever. I’d be wearing a cream or red trousers suit with whatever accessories I decide on the day

DontReplyIWillLie · 22/06/2025 19:49

I'm afraid that I'm the auntie/cousin who will go my own way & wear what I want. What's she going to do? Throw me out?

I would.

Is the wedding in Whitby?

But a black shirt has negative connotations. My DH would never buy or wear a black shirt as affiliated with fascists.

Seriously?!

She hasn’t kicked them in the minge. She had specified a very easy to follow dress code - and anyone who is that fussed about not following it can simply decline the invitation.

So you DID dictate what your guests wore!

It's still an arsey way to treat your guests. Please come to our wedding but only if you fit our aesthetic. Horrible attitude to have. Far ruder to set up the invitation in that way than to fail to adhere to it.

Don’t be silly that’s societal norms and would not have been written in the invitation!

Sane as don’t wear a long veil!

Well apparently they don’t, or there wouldn’t be a thread. Everyone is wearing black to this wedding!
