To think the US was right to bomb Iran? What am I missing?

I am no fan of Trump. I’m very much left wing.

But am I missing something here? Why has everyone become such huge supporters of Iran? The world is a safer place as a result of removing their capability to develop nuclear weapons? Why is everyone carrying on like Iran is a victim and they were truly just trying to implement peaceful nuclear capabilities? Has everyone lost the plot?

Was Hamas not elected by the people of Palestine? When did Israel take control? Surprised it hasn’t been on the news.

"Hamas won a bare plurality of votes (44 percent to the more moderate Fatah party’s 41 percent) but, given the electoral system, a strong majority of seats (74 to 45). Neither party was keen on sharing power. Fighting broke out between the two. When a unity government was finally formed in June 2007, Hamas broke the deal, started murdering Fatah members, and, in the end, took total control of the Gaza Strip. Those who weren’t killed fled to the West Bank, and the territories have remained split ever since.
In other words, Hamas’ absolute rule of Gaza is not what the Palestinians voted for back in 2006. In fact, since the median age of Gazans is 18, half of Hamas’ subjects weren’t even born when the election took place. Since they have known no alternative, have absorbed little information but Hamas propaganda, and have witnessed periodic outbursts of violent conflict with Israel throughout their lives, it is impossible to know what they really think about their rulers."

How George W. Bush Helped Hamas Come to Power

In Bush’s naïveté about the magic of elections, he ignored a crucial point about democracy.

IsthataYes · 22/06/2025 23:21

I caught the ex head of something military wise on lbc earlier with extensive middle east experience

He said basically that many middle eastern counties view Iran as a bad actor thorn in their side but when it comes to Iran a Muslim country v the West

Islam will win

I agree entirely with this. But they were voting for a Palestinian government. Not Israeli. Because Palestine is not controlled by Israel.

I think they genuinely don’t realise how lucky they are to live in the west.

Tell me. Why do you support Iran developing nuclear capabilities?

Why is anyone pointing out that it’s a dangerous hostile state deemed right wing and American?

Could it be you’ve listened to propaganda and are becoming a fifth columnist?

You know who is definitely hostile and definitely has nuclear weapons…..Israel. Wanna talk about the real problem instead or no? And I’m not sure you’re left wing….

In your narrow minded world maybe. In mine we consider everyone as equals because, well, they are.

Who is defending the regime? Saying going to war with Iran is bad idea is a far cry from defending the regime. Of course most people want brutal dictatorships out. How is bombing them going to accomplish that? It's only going to entrench anti-Israel and anti-American sentiment further. Anyway, the stated goal of bombing is to destroy nukes, not regime change.

You’ve said it yourself. It was about getting rid of the capability to produce nuclear weapons. Who is talking about going to war?

Bombing is an act of war, as I'm sure you know very well, whatever the reason for it. Whether war is officially declared or not, war is being waged when you bomb another country.
That's not a debatable point.

Okay, well we’re not at war.

Maybe read a little about why countries in the middle east wish death to the West......

It's this curious, almost racist habit that the left seem to have now, to assume that the West is all-powerful and people in other regions have no agency or personal responsibility, and are helpless not to be terrorist nutters.

Total racism of low expectations, with a hefty dose of white guilt and self-hatred.

Edited

I think the term is ‘suicidal empathy’.

Gal Saad speaks very eloquently about this as well as the ingrained hatred of Jewish people.

Iran fired missiles at Israel twice last year so they started this war then?

snughugs · 23/06/2025 00:28

There’s still no evidence that they had nuclear weapons. Other countries will get involved. No way will the USA send out troops like they did in Vietnam, so Israel could well be flattened.

Chintzcardboard · 23/06/2025 00:32

The “West” including UK has had eyes on Iran’s development nuclear capabilities for decades.

Ask self … post Cold War - why does any nation feel need to develop nukes? Why does Iran need nukes?
Oh, and who are Iran’s allies? Is it Russia? China? Oh, and Syria and Lebanon, yes, at least those 4. Now spot these nations on a map.
Should all nations have nukes ? Or is it best practice to stop them, especially when world knows they are lying about making nukes.

The world knows they are making nukes, West doesn’t want them to be able to treaten to use them.

Iran … should not have global influence & power to threaten because of nukes. They are unstable.

If Israel could be flattened do you not think it would’ve been by now?

Why were they stockpiling uranium? What more evidence do you need?

America has killed millions of innocent people in its bombings and invasions around the world since WW2 in its pursuit of cheap oil, shareholder profits, and installing US friendly puppet governments. Iran might not be “good guys” but neither is the United States of America. It’s a violent country domestically and a blood thirsty one abroad.

Would you rather be stranded in the US or Iran? There is no comparison.

anotherside · 23/06/2025 01:07

Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Iraq x2, Afghanistan … plus bombings in Libya, Pakistan, Yemen… in total the US has been directly responsible for anywhere between 3-6 million civilian deaths since WW2.

I’d rather not holiday in either. Be stranded for a few days? Iran, because I’ve never been and while I enjoyed my two trips to the US it’s not somewhere I plan to visit again any time soon.
