To have insisted on DH doing his ‘business’ at work when we were down to one bathroom

I told my friends this last night who found it amusing so would be interested to hear if they are the only ones!

We were down to just our upstairs bathroom this week as the downstairs bathroom was being re-done (finally finished yesterday afternoon).

Given the heat, DH was told that he should do his usual morning business when he arrives at his work rather than use the upstairs bathroom, as I didn’t fancy the smell festering all morning in this heat.

DH was fine with this - AIBU to have made such a request?!

Why is he leaving such a stench? Has he seen a doctor? Does he know how to flush and clean up after himself? Use an air freshener?Open a window?

I think it's very unreasonable to not be toilet trained but then impose that on his colleagues rather than poo.at home.

Yes it would seem extraordinary that a grown man doesn't know basic toilet etiquette!

It’s nothing. It’s documented we don’t smell our own ‘products’ in the same way as those of others. All of you who think your farts and shits don't smell are deluded.

Nonsense, you can smell anyone's poo if it's "nuclear" like OP describes.

There's something wrong with his digestive system if he's really that smelly.

I’m struggling to believe that one bathroom houses are as common as is being made out. What an absurd proposition.

Even the ghastly shoe box new builds which have sprung up everywhere have at least two.

If I was to consider acquiring an older property with one bathroom, I’d certainly conduct due diligence on the ease at which a further one could be installed.

It’s 2025, goodness me.

Of course they’re common. You sound ignorant and small minded.
Half the cul de sac I live on has a single upstairs bathroom. I imagine most of the 2 bed houses in villages and towns have a single bathroom/toilet. And of course most of the flats for smaller/single person families will have only one.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 22/06/2025 09:11

I’m 52 and have lived my whole life in one bathroom houses. In naice, even posh areas, too. The horror!

Whilst I agree a second loo would be nice and if I ever move (not planning to) would make sure we had one, we bought what we could afford at the time 🤷🏼‍♀️

You do realise millions of people in the world don’t have access to running water or a single private loo, having even a home with one bathroom is privileged against that backdrop

OP doesn’t even know that there are millions of households in the UK that only have one toilet. I’d take any of her opinions with a pinch of salt.

What about holidays- if you share a hotel room with your DH?

Apparently Mumsnetters just wait until they get home and make their DH use the toilets near the hotel bar, rather than use the toilet in the hotel bathroom, if they don't have similarly controllable bowels.

Tbry24 · 22/06/2025 10:18

How abusive and controlling are you?!!! That’s crazy. Your poor partner should be able to use a toilet in the house he lives in.

CatsMother62 · 22/06/2025 10:23

You posted this for a joke right? For clicks? If not I honestly don't know what to say...

Hallywally · 22/06/2025 10:42

@Bjorkdidit”Similarly controllable bowels” 🤣🤣🤣 That phrase did tickle me! This is such a weird thread!

I’m not suggesting his poo doesn’t smell bad - just that OP’s probably smells the same to him. Presumably their diet is very similar.

I have never in my life lived in a home with a bathroom window. At present my bathroom is next door to the kitchen, and it has no window, only an extractor fan. Thankfully, I am the only one using it, and I use poo pourri, which is very helpful. And surely you all know that there is no spray that eliminates the smell of shit. I dream of a bathroom with a window, and I am so jealous of all you smug bastards opening them whenever you like, without a care in the world.

The extractor fan will extract the air just as a window would though…

After 3 hours and 20 noisy minutes perhaps. Not too practicable. Cardibach - you've got a window, haven't you?

I have currently. I lived for 19 years in a house with a tiny windowless bathroom and moved from there to spend 2 years in a flat with a larger, but still windowless, bathroom. That one didn’t have an extractor fan either. Never noticed an issue. In the flat (duplex) opening the bathroom door and the bedroom windows for a bit sorted any (infrequent) issues.
