To have insisted on DH doing his ‘business’ at work when we were down to one bathroom

I told my friends this last night who found it amusing so would be interested to hear if they are the only ones!

We were down to just our upstairs bathroom this week as the downstairs bathroom was being re-done (finally finished yesterday afternoon).

Given the heat, DH was told that he should do his usual morning business when he arrives at his work rather than use the upstairs bathroom, as I didn’t fancy the smell festering all morning in this heat.

DH was fine with this - AIBU to have made such a request?!

It appears there has been some misinterpretation of my previous post. By more than bathroom, I am of course including a downstairs ‘loo’ in this description. We refer to ours as a bathroom given it’s extremely spacious by comparison of most downstairs ‘loo’s’ which we have frequented.

Wow I've always lived in houses that just have one bathroom. No seperate loo and no ensuite. Didn't realize I was so deprived

@WarmDeer

when you get divorced OP you might need to live in a bed sit with one bathroom. Divorce can be very expensive. And you’ll have to smell your own shit.

This must considered. Perhaps let him shit in his own house, OP, before a friend advises him to hire a solicitor and go live his best life.

I’m struggling to believe that one bathroom houses are as common as is being made out. What an absurd proposition.

Even the ghastly shoe box new builds which have sprung up everywhere have at least two.

If I was to consider acquiring an older property with one bathroom, I’d certainly conduct due diligence on the ease at which a further one could be installed.

It’s 2025, goodness me.

You are welcome to come to my house and check if you don't believe we only have one bathroom. As long as you don't need to poo while you are here obviously.

Is your temporarily one-bathroomed home sometimes passed by three billy goats?

plenty of 1 toilet houses around, Mostly 3 bed and under but still plenty with no downstairs loo or ensuite. (Viewing assistant for estate agent, seen literally thousands of houses and flats).

DoYouReally · 21/06/2025 17:11

How absolutely horrible and controlling to not allow a man shit in his own house.

He won't be long getting sick of this behaviour.

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

You know literally millions of people live in houses/flats etc built in the 1920s-1990s ish where 1 toilet and/or bathroom was common. In fact the older ones wouldn't have had a toilet indoors! So they moved them into where the plumbing was...near the kitchen (sometimes, effectively a cupboard in the kitchen)

It's probably more common to have 1 bathroom and toilet than more than 1...

Oh no how do the peasants with one bathroom cope?!

That’s me. I’ve only ever had one bathroom. And I love with my four adult children

Clueless 🙄

Of course lots of people live in houses with one bathroom. There are literally entire streets in my village where the houses have one bathroom and where adding a second bathroom/ toilet would be very difficult and costly.

Most of the houses I’ve lived in have only had one bathroom.

I think one proper sized bathroom is much better than those houses where they’ve fitted in a tiny en-suite with a tiny box of a shower with no room to turn around and where the toilet is literally touching the sides of the shower or sink.

beesandstrawberries · 21/06/2025 17:41

Oh dear what would you do if you lived in a flat with one bathroom. You’re a snob

Polewaxed · 21/06/2025 17:43

Telling people when and where they can shit. That’s not controlling at all. Completely fine.

DD has just moved in with a flatmate to a newish two bedder. One bathroom, the loo is in the bathroom. Just for comparison.

It’s nothing. It’s documented we don’t smell our own ‘products’ in the same way as those of others. All of you who think your farts and shits don't smell are deluded.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/06/2025 18:22

If I have understood you correctly, @WarmDeer, you usually have 1 main bathroom, 1 downstairs loo and 1 en-suite, but currently one of the three is out of action. If this is the case, why can’t you let him use the remaining bathroom, and you use the en suite, until the third loo is back in action?

Or open a window in the loo he uses, or use air freshener, or leave a box of matches in there and ask him to strike a couple of them after his poo, to dissipate the smell?

Frankly, I think you are unreasonable to ban him from the loo in your en suite - we have an en suite, and I wouldn’t dream of dictating to dh which of his bodily functions he can do in there.

It’s amazing how many threads there are on MN about people being so protective of their toilets. I gave up reading the “close the lid” one a few days ago, but I think it’s still going!

The13thFairy · 22/06/2025 06:20

I have never in my life lived in a home with a bathroom window. At present my bathroom is next door to the kitchen, and it has no window, only an extractor fan. Thankfully, I am the only one using it, and I use poo pourri, which is very helpful. And surely you all know that there is no spray that eliminates the smell of shit. I dream of a bathroom with a window, and I am so jealous of all you smug bastards opening them whenever you like, without a care in the world.
