Showing support for terrorism is illegal so why do people do it?

Nowayyousure · 19/06/2025 11:36

Well we all know it's illegal, don't we?

It happens though. The flags, the signs, the slogans, the chants, what is said etc.

Kneecap was charged on supporting terrorism. I understand that the charges relate to things like waving the Hezbollah flag and shouting in support of terrorist organisations.

He has been bailed pending trial.

Kneecap's Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, aka Mo Chara, is accused of displaying a flag in support of proscribed organisation Hezbollah.

But plenty of people like myself do acknowledge all the evil of the British Army, IDF, etc etc etc. I appreciate a lot don't but plenty do and when a thread is created discussing the issue of people publicly showing support for a terrorist group you decided to derail it with whataboutism about different types of terrorists and how we define what a terrorist is.

Because the OP directly asked why people would support terrorists!! Impossible to interrogate that without asking ourselves, ok, what makes a terrorist and who defines that? It’s clearly not just committing violent atrocities, because then many governments would fit the bill.

but this whole thread is a gaslight - ask people why someone might support terrorism, then when people say, well, one of the reasons is that they don’t actually view them as terrorists because e.g. fighting against occupiers is clearly a different kettle of fish than the Bataclan attacks in Paris for instance, then it’s I DEMAND YOU TELL ME IF YOU UNEQUIVOCALLY CONDEMN HAMAS when actually what we are talking about is much more subtle - it’s about how illegal terrorism is defined by who has the power and control of the narrative.

I dont know, I've never been in that situation.

I think until we have been in a situation we can never predict what lengths we would go to especially to protect our children or to ensure they have a future free from occupation.

It's very easy to say I would never do it until it becomes your reality.

Exactly this. The lack of critical thinking is so frustrating.

I can confidently say that I would never murder, rape and kidnap innocent civilians, including children and babies.

What about denying people food and water?

The original story when he was charged. Glastonbury festival immediately dropped him from the line up.

No they didn't. They are scheduled to play: inews.co.uk/news/media/bbc-not-ban-kneecap-from-its-glastonbury-coverage-3728468

hopefully he will be acquitted of all charges as the defence argued that the court was outside of the statutory 6 months to charge him…. By one day.

Fair enough.

Maybe you are correct because I can confidently say I would not support a government/military that does that either.

Maybe not, but through your taxes you fund the supply of arms to people who do, provide training for them to do it, give them intelligence through spyplanes and parrot their propaganda through state media.

Its all very well keeping your own hands clean but when the British government is kneedeep in genocide everyone is tainted.

TakeMe2Insanity · 19/06/2025 20:42

What about denying people food and water?

Probably not, unless it was some kind of survival situation.

But I'm not sure why this has turned into what I may or may not do in a hypothetical extreme situation.

What does that have to do with anything I've said? You don't even know where I live and who I pay taxes to.

I'm sure your taxes go to things you don't agree with too. Has nothing to do with whether you'd personally murder anyone.

You better have a read of what both the SAS and SBS have been accused of doing in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I have no great support for the British government.

Nowayyousure · 19/06/2025 11:42

I mean I wouldn't go out and show support for those that bombed the World Trade Centres or London Tubes and buses or Manchester Arena. Wearing colours of terrorists and showing them support increasing more hatred.

Isn't the best way just wanting peace.

Because these people don’t want peace.

You say that having grown up, never having known oppression. You don't know how you might act if you had endured the oppressors murdering and torturing your family.

I would like to think I would not commit atrocities but I, like you, have grown up in a free country and in a position of privilege so can't say certainty how growing up in those circumstances might impact me.

its not unusual

He has also very generously agreed to forego his right to an interpreter for the August court date but will obviously require one if the case proceeds.

I reported your previous post for its racism. MN obviously agreed with me.

Maybe try again without the racism and it won't be deleted.

Scorchio84 · 19/06/2025 23:23

Also in fairness I appreciate you admitting it was you, still at a loss as to the "racism" accusation, they're white & Irish, same as me but sure you must have had your reason
