At what age should you stop wearing jeans ?

When are you too old to wear jeans? I've always worn jeans, tee-shirt, fleeces etc. I wore a uniform at work. I can dress up when it's warranted and scrub up quite well. But it's unnecessary and over the top for going to the chip shop !
I do wear nice tops and cardigans when meeting with my friend for lunch.
Is it time to embrace the polyester ?

Never too old. People should wear whatever they want at any age. Die in jeans aged 100

Threecraws · 13/06/2025 07:05

When you stop feeling comfortable wearing them

Astrak · 13/06/2025 07:10

I'm 79, 5ft.9ins tall, weigh 9st 9lbs and wear skinny jeans, legging, fleeces and whatever else I fancy. As long as my clothes are covering up the bits that I want covered, I'll wear whatever I want.

SunnyPugdays · 13/06/2025 07:11

I will probably get buried in mine

About two seconds before you die?

What should one wear in those last 2 seconds? I guess it will have to be something not very fiddly as 2 seconds isn't that long to get changed? And not enough time to also fold the jeans and put them away. I don't want to die with clothes on the floor 😱

Myblueclematis · 13/06/2025 07:14

I go to a dancing class and ladies there still wear jeans and they are in their 70s and older. They look absolutely fine.

IAmNeverThePerson · 13/06/2025 07:15

My MIL started wearing them when she was 75 if that helps?

You won’t remember….😁

I think there is a popular misconception that people stop doing things that they have always done when they get old. But in fact they simply don't start doing new things quite so often.

My Nan rarely wears jeans (might have a pair for tough gardening) she's nearly 100 (and still gardening she's a superstar) but she hasn't stopped, she just never started. Jeans were not popular when she was young and she has stuck to what she knows, likes and feels comfortable in.

She didn't cut her hair when she got to a certain age. Long hair was just not fashionable when she found her style so she has never had it. She found a style that she liked, that was popular when she was young and sticks with it

Same for mini skirts, manners, even food preferences.

On your 84th birthday take all your denim to the charity shop. While you're there pick up some lovely slacks and some of those big shoes with velcro on.

And a polyester tied floral frock which you wear with American tan tights and the shoes you mentioned.

Londonrach1 · 13/06/2025 07:23

Thinking 120 maybe 130 is the time to stop wearing jeans ...jeans are age less surely.

minnienono · 13/06/2025 07:23

? Never, I have friends in their 90’s who wear them

SirRaymondClench · 13/06/2025 07:24

There are no 'shoulds' on how you dress or have your hair or whatever other than you SHOULD dress how you like.

I'm 53 next week and have long hair and wear jeans and whatever the fuck I like because this is my life and I will do whatever I please. I realised when I was 50 that I don't need to follow trends etc and just wear the clothes I like.

I hate all this nonsense that women should cut their hair short at 40 and wear what clothes society tells them to.

This is your life OP so dress however you like.

MonetsLilac · 13/06/2025 07:27

...or even have long flowing hair because that's the default for women and girls now.
I agree. Find your own style and confidence.

minnienono · 13/06/2025 07:29

@Nothungrycat

same here, found a picture of myself at a Pulp concert, I’m going next week and quite frankly I’m likely to be in near identical clothes - Levi’s (not 501’s now, I’m a bit bigger!) black vest top and doc martens.

nomas · 13/06/2025 06:46

Yes, I could wear it when I was younger but now I find it makes me sweat.

I just hate the feel of it. Cotton and linen for me as much as possible!

TranceNation · 13/06/2025 07:31

Never even realised there was a cut off date for wearing jeans. What are we supposed to do? Wear tracksuit bottoms or leggings?

MarvellousMonsters · 13/06/2025 07:33

Never. Wear whatever you want.

Me too. It's difficult though, so many clothes are made of polyester.

Stowickthevast · 13/06/2025 07:35

@MarxistMags You sound quite conformist for a Marxist - can't we just all wear whatever we want or are jeans bourgeoise this days?

MargaretThursday · 13/06/2025 07:36

Th wears some. She's 80. She also still plays competitive tennis and would object to being called elderly.

I don't get the love for jeans-I've never found a pair I find comfortable.

Kazziek · 13/06/2025 07:36

There's an age limit for different items of clothing??

tammienorrie · 13/06/2025 07:40

According to my mum, about 40. She has a long list of things which are not suitable once you hit some random age, including jeans and longer hair.

SillyMillie90 · 13/06/2025 07:41

It’s up to you. The answer is of course never but it’s up to you. There’s no rule even though women’s magazines/media/society will try convince you otherwise. We make up these silly rules you can just ignore them.

How odd. 40 is young, nowadays!
