At what age should you stop wearing jeans ?

When are you too old to wear jeans? I've always worn jeans, tee-shirt, fleeces etc. I wore a uniform at work. I can dress up when it's warranted and scrub up quite well. But it's unnecessary and over the top for going to the chip shop !
I do wear nice tops and cardigans when meeting with my friend for lunch.
Is it time to embrace the polyester ?

Jeans look good on people of all sizes, backgrounds and ages. They suit babies and grandads. There's no upper age limit for jeans. In fact, if you've always worn them and stopped, just because of the number of birthdays you've had, that would be odd in itself. Would you still look like you?

5foot5 · 13/06/2025 00:54

No age limit, so long as the jeans are not "distressed". Sign of my age obviously, but I have never understood why people pay good money for clothes that look like they are ready to be thrown out.

spoonbillstretford · 13/06/2025 00:55

Never. Gen X will never stop wearing them.

The older generations didn't lever generally quite latch onto or wear jeans to the same degree and they were much less accessible and more difficult to wear at one time.

I remember being a size 12 when I was 14 on the late 1980s and desperate to wear 501s but they were so unflattering and none fit properly.

A few years ago when I was a size 16 and in my 40s I walked into a Levis shop and the assistant picked out a pair of skinny jeans (which were fashionable then) that fitted beautifully and were actually flattering, I was amazed as I'd been feeling I was too fat for jeans and certainly skinny ones.

My question would be what age do you start wearing jeans and the answer would be never. Bloody uncomfortable things. The only ones that are even close to comfortable look awful. I do have what has been described as a long waist so maybe that's why I hate them so much.

Do you think they look awful on everyone, or just you?

Not sure that’s an age thing, distressed jeans have been in and out of fashion since the 80s at least, unless you were already old 45 years ago!

spikefaithbuffyangel · 13/06/2025 01:17

My grandad wears them and he’s 98!

soupforbrains · 13/06/2025 01:17

You are being unreasonable to think that age has anything to do with it

When the menopause fades, the waist widens and the hips disappear. This is when the comfy elastic waist pants come along and the jeans hit the donation pile.

That’s just a body type. I’ve always been thin and curvy the hips in my family never disappear.

But even so some women are built with narrow hips. My best friend is like this and looks like a model in jeans.

xPenelopePitstop · 13/06/2025 02:15

My 80 year old gran wears jeans.

Nobody is “too old” for jeans.

HeartandSeoul · 13/06/2025 02:35

I met a 93yr old lady the other day, and she was wearing a pair of jeans 😊.

It wasn't my post, but I think jeans can look fantastic but only on a very small number of people. It's not an age thing, I just don't like jeans.

The OP can't seriously expect anyone is going to give her an actual numerical answer. I stopped wearing jeans in my mid 20s, but that's because I don't like them.

I never stated the OP could. My response to the poster you’ve replied to was asking a genuine question which was did she think jeans look awful on everyone or just herself, a reasonable question, yes?

You seem annoyed.

Ketzele · 13/06/2025 03:04

My grandmother still wears jeans and she's 101. Not skinnies, obvs.

Sadmummy3 · 13/06/2025 03:09

My mum wore jeans until just before she died at 82 so...
I do recall years ago there was an article in a paper (I assume it wasn't serious) about what age people should stop wearing certain clothes and jeans was 54.
IRK most people I know where jeans whatever age they are.

This is what bemuses me, that there’s some kind of official cut off point (for anything) because the media/fashion gods say so.

EconomyClassRockstar · 13/06/2025 03:13

I mean, my Mum is 87 and wears jeans pretty much daily. I don't think there's be been a cut off (unless we're talking about length!) since 1965

Codlingmoths · 13/06/2025 03:36

FloridaCat · 13/06/2025 00:18

About two seconds before you die?

Totally disagree. The very last thing on my list for I have seconds to die is ‘must get out of my jeans’ 😁
op, why would there be a maximum age? Jeans are forever.

OhcantthInkofaname · 13/06/2025 03:57

When they cut them off me on the autopsy table! I'm nearly 75.

MurdoMunro · 13/06/2025 04:18

I suppose you might need two care workers rather than the normal one to get you in/out of your skinnies. Depends how sprightly you are after 90.

Natsku · 13/06/2025 04:19

There's never a time to embrace polyester. Nasty material.

GarlicMile · 13/06/2025 04:22

PondGhost · 13/06/2025 00:21

I’m told if you dare to put them after you’ve passed your Jeans Sell By Date, they turn into molten acid at the touch of your elderly flesh, and penetrate to the bone.

😂😂

Zanatdy · 13/06/2025 04:24

Never. My mum is 71 and wears Jeans everyday. There isn’t an age limit to wearing jeans, or anything really.

You just get jeans with some Lycra in them. Trust me, I'm there and have been for some time!

NattyTurtle59 · 13/06/2025 04:27

My almost 81 year old neighbour wears jeans - and looks good in them.

Why do you need to stop?
