At what age should you stop wearing jeans ?

When are you too old to wear jeans? I've always worn jeans, tee-shirt, fleeces etc. I wore a uniform at work. I can dress up when it's warranted and scrub up quite well. But it's unnecessary and over the top for going to the chip shop !
I do wear nice tops and cardigans when meeting with my friend for lunch.
Is it time to embrace the polyester ?

Never! In my 60s. Get your filthy paws off my jeans 🤣

MyDeftDuck · 13/06/2025 06:26

If this post wasn’t so comical it would be insulting!
Age is just a number and after wearing a uniform for most of my working life I will now wear what I like, when I like…….event appropriate naturally.
There are NO pull-on polyester slacks in my wardrobe nor is there any fully fashioned twin sets!
I am a grandmother, and I wear jeans and leggings and DM boots…….if folk don’t like what they see they can bugger off and pull their eyes out!

KPPlumbing · 13/06/2025 06:26

Good God almighty - never!

PrincessofHyrule · 13/06/2025 06:27

My mum has started wearing jeans at 86 years old. I was quite surprised as I don't remember her wearing them at any point in my lifetime.

She looks good - they did have a bit of elastication at back so comfortable.

MIL in her 70s has always worn jeans.

MonetsLilac · 13/06/2025 06:28

Polyester pull on slacks and twin sets haven't been a thing for older women since about 1975. If you're stylish, you'll stay that way forever. If you don't care what you look like? Same.
I'm 65 and love fashion and clothes. I have colleagues in their 30s who wear leggings and bobbly jumpers, or hideous polyester dresses with tiers and frills.
Style has no age limit.

Nothungrycat · 13/06/2025 06:35

I found a photo of myself at Uni the other day (just over 40 years ago). I was wearing jeans, sweatshirt and trainers. I'm still wearing jeans, sweatshirt and trainers - although the sizes are rather bigger these days!

45 at the latest 😏 Oh, and you should have booked your one-way ticket to Dignitas, pausing only to hand your house and pension over to your children - while wearing polyester crepe trousers and a waterfall cardigan.

The kids probably gave you the Big Slipper and the lap tray in hopes that you'd trip over your feet, crack your head open on the dropped tray and expire gently among the remains of your supper. "She was getting on a bit," they'll murmur sadly, "but she always kept herself nice. She was 46, you know." 👵

😆😆

Jeans were invented to be practical, there is no age limit.

Exactly long lasting too.

Boredlass · 13/06/2025 06:39

I did wonder this at one point as I’m nearly 50 and wear jeans every day but then my 87 year old sister in law came to visit wearing jeans. I’ll wear them forever

Sprinkles211 · 13/06/2025 06:40

I assume when you can't undo them quick enough for a wee!

Sherararara · 13/06/2025 06:42

Didn’t know they came with an age limit

AlertCat · 13/06/2025 06:42

When you die.

KawasakiBabe · 13/06/2025 06:43

I think this question used to be a ‘thing’ but I’m 58, I’ve been wearing jeans my whole life. It’s not something I’ll ever stop. I put this with, at what age should I cut my hair short and get a perm. Lol

What a a ridiculous question.

There's never a time to embrace polyester. Nasty material.

Yes, I could wear it when I was younger but now I find it makes me sweat.

Never. Gen X will never stop wearing them.

The older generations didn't lever generally quite latch onto or wear jeans to the same degree and they were much less accessible and more difficult to wear at one time.

I remember being a size 12 when I was 14 on the late 1980s and desperate to wear 501s but they were so unflattering and none fit properly.

A few years ago when I was a size 16 and in my 40s I walked into a Levis shop and the assistant picked out a pair of skinny jeans (which were fashionable then) that fitted beautifully and were actually flattering, I was amazed as I'd been feeling I was too fat for jeans and certainly skinny ones.

Edited

This. I was similar (possibly chubbier) at the same age mid 90s and my mum had to get me jeans in adult men's shops (which obviously didn't have the cut or brand of the fashionable ones). Levi's were a thing of the popular skinny queen bees and I couldn't dare dreaming of fitting in one.

Glad there are so many options now - well, at least here in the UK, not in my home country where (at a UK 16) I could only shop in eye-wateringly expensive curvy shops featuring granny style only. There is also much more judgment around about what you are "supposed" to wear at your age and size, what haircut etc.

If I ever manage to retire there, I'll keep flying over here for clothes shopping and then keep embracing the culture of staying myself - flared/bootcut jeans, short tshirts or tucked in (why should I wear tunics if I have short legs?) and long hair until I die.

Shuttupmeg · 13/06/2025 06:50

My MIL is 79 and you’d have a hard time getting her out of her jeans. She wears skinny ones and dresses like kate moss in the 90s. She looks fabulous.

Flamingoknees · 13/06/2025 06:54

When you can't get them on and off seems reasonable.

Wisenotboring · 13/06/2025 06:54

Really...are we doing this? Obviously you can wear jeans for as long as you want OP. I'm sure the most cursory look.around would.show you that people wear jeans at all sorts of ages.

Jk987 · 13/06/2025 06:55

This is a joke.

Never mind the jeans, it’s the fleeces that should be stopped unless you’re climbing a mountain!

cheesycheesy · 13/06/2025 06:56

Oh god yes. Hideous. I’m picturing a wolf logo and walking sandals

bigdecisionstomake · 13/06/2025 06:56

My mum is 82 and rocks in jeans - I am nearly 60 and live in them. Why on earth would you consider there's an age limit to when you need to stop wearing them. Know your own mind and wear what you want when you want.

IberianBlackout · 13/06/2025 07:02

Probably when you don’t have the strength to faster the buttons anymore. It’s always been a battle to me and I know one day I’ll start losing it yet again.
