Neighbour not happy with my fence?

chcocooo · 12/06/2025 08:20

So basically after months of neighbours kids:

Playing-on my drive
Trespassing on my drive
Chucking footballs at my living room window.
Constantly standing by my living room window
Shouting and waking my toddlers up.

I finally got a fence installed on Monday which has solved all the issues.

But now my neighbour will apparently struggle to fit two cars on her drive as before the man and his partner would park close on the boundary and his door would open on my bit.
He has asked if I could move the fence further on my bit but it will impact my own ability to have 2 cars on my drive.

AIBU to decline this as it’s on my own drive?

No, you are not BU.

Prayingforananswer · 12/06/2025 08:22

Decline. We fit two cars in our garage by having one reverse in, so both cars used the same space in the middle for opening doors.

Doggymummar · 12/06/2025 08:22

Don't be daft. So ling as it's on your land it's fine. I assume you had tried to resolve things amicably before resorting to this action.

CatsorDogsrule · 12/06/2025 08:23

So long as there are no covenants preventing a fence between your properties, YANBU.

Picklechicken · 12/06/2025 08:23

If it’s on the boundary line then they can get stuffed.

chcocooo · 12/06/2025 08:23

Hi yes I did try and tell the parents and the kids many times about this.
The parents would just stand and watch their kids walk all over my plants and looking into my windows.

Overthebow · 12/06/2025 08:23

No yanbu, don’t move it. They were using your drive before for access to their car, that’s not your problem if they now can’t use your drive.

Koazy · 12/06/2025 08:23

Nope. Tough as long as it’s in the correct place

ZImono · 12/06/2025 08:26

Yanbu in the slightest.

Say no unfortunately you can,the boundary is the boundary and moving it would cause potential issues when selling.

And if they hadn't so egregiously encroached on your drive they wouldn't have the hassle of trying to tie themselves in knots parking their 2 cars.

I love that he also presumably wants YOU to pay so HE can park his cars.
Just nuts...

Northernladdette · 12/06/2025 08:26

YANBU. I don’t blame you. They’ll have to find some other way of parking, and should have disciplined their children. Well done you!

caramac04 · 12/06/2025 08:26

Well this is a consequence of their poor parenting. It’s a shame they allowed their children to be so rude and disrespectful because that is entirely the reason for the fence.

FOJN · 12/06/2025 08:27

YANBU. If they had bothered to manage their children's behaviour there wouldn't be a fence so it's a problem if their own making.

AmelieSummer25 · 12/06/2025 08:27

Nope. As long as it's on your land, leave it.

if they carry on I'd simply say 'No, I asked you nicely to stop your kids trespassing and gawping through my windows & waking my children.

the fence is on my land, it's staying where it is'

HappyintheHills · 12/06/2025 08:28

🤣😂🤣 YANBU at all.

Actions have consequences and these now fall with him.

Could he park his car the other way around?

nopineapplepizza · 12/06/2025 08:31

The fuck-arounders never like the find-out phase do they? 🤷‍♀️

Well there's your answer. Stand your ground. They don't like it because you've had the audacity to do something about it.

LurkyMcLurkinson · 12/06/2025 08:33

Let’s reframe the question.
Should I disadvantage myself to accommodate and advantage neighbours who have made my life more challenging yet made no accommodations for me.
I think anyone would have a hard no response to that.

KeineBedeutung · 12/06/2025 08:34

They're learning that actions have consequences.
As long as you're 100% sure the fence is in the correct place then no need to move it.
'The fence was a last resort, after repeated ignored requests to respect my garden and my privacy.'

GoldMoon · 12/06/2025 08:35

If they're garden is just two car widths wide , tough .
If the garden has flower beds , grass , they have to lose part of that to accommodate the cars .

heldinadream · 12/06/2025 08:39

They sound like utter selfish arseholes, OP. All I can say is well bloody done for putting a fence up.
Is your front garden nice enough to sit in? If I was you I'd put a lovely seat and table out there and enjoy a gin and tonic cuppa in my own garden whenever I could and I knew they were about to arrive home and have to struggle with their drive, the poor hard done by little things. But I'm feeling like that this morning, you're probably much nicer.
Well done. Ignore 'em. Smile and nod. Do anything you like except give in to them.

ScrubbedCauliflower · 12/06/2025 08:49

In my experience if you give these types of neighbours an inch they’ll constantly think they can walk all over you with all sorts of scenarios now and it’ll never stop. You’ve shown how you will deal with their nuisance behaviours by putting up your fence (good for you) if you back down on this now you’ll just make a rod for your own back. You’re entitled to put a boundary fence on your land. They should’ve given you and your property more respect. What did you say to your neighbour when they asked you to move your fence? You do realise if you give these people room on your land to open their car door they could try to claim an easement or prescriptive right later on to that part of your garden. I’d put your no in writing if I were you. Don’t give a reason just say, “no, i’m entitled to put a boundary fence on my property and moving it won’t work for me” try to steer clear of the whys and wherefores you don’t need to explain and of course they know exactly why you’ve done it.

MalcolmMoo · 12/06/2025 08:55

Decline. Sounds like the fence is on your land so there’s nothing your neighbours can do about it. Tbh they shouldn’t ever have been getting out of their car with the door over your land anyway.

ASimpleLampoon · 12/06/2025 08:55

Womp womp. Should have taught his kids to be more considerate

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 12/06/2025 08:57

Isn't no a complete sentence?

Hi yes I did try and tell the parents and the kids many times about this.

They are CF.
I'd have CCTV positioned so it can see the boundary in case they sneakily move it. He should park the other way round and then his door can open onto their side.
