I’m really upset I’m still fat

It’s been years since I’ve been trying to lose weight. I have done lots of diets but I can’t stick to anything. I will not take the weight loss jabs (no judgement to those that do btw) im just lost. I have all the exercise equipment at home but im so fat still. Yes I don’t exercise much so yes I know my fault.

my biggest thing is my emotions. If I have a bad day or great day I will eat loads. Been off work today due to ds being really unwell and from morning till evening I have just stress eaten.

please help me

Exercise does very little in terms of weight. It mostly about diet.

If you believe your emotions or response to stress is the route case have you tried counselling and looking for other stress outlets?

Grapewrath · 10/06/2025 22:23

Read ‘why we eat too much’ by Andrew Jenkinson or follow Stacey Simms- I’ve found both helpful and they don’t follow the rhetoric of calories in vs calories out

Gustavo1 · 10/06/2025 22:29

I’ve just said almost this exact thing to my husband. I’ve been dieting for a few weeks. I’ve lost about 10lbs. Felt good. Better. Less achey. Less bloated. Then tonight I’ve eaten a huge bag of chocolate, just because it was there.
I don’t feel like I’ll ever actually lose enough weight to make a real difference to my life. I’ve got 5-6 stone to lose to be a healthy weight but keep yo-yo ing the same 10-16lb.

Sorry @Refvs, that’s not helpful but I you’re not alone.

wheresmymojo · 10/06/2025 22:31

I finally cracked the same thing after having counselling primarily based on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT).

For me it was about learning to identify and then process my emotions in a healthier way - the counsellor literally had to teach me like I was a small child as I had no idea what people actually meant by ‘processing emotions’ in a practical sense.

spoonbillstretford · 10/06/2025 22:34

It's a shame you won't consider Mounjaro, OP, as a lot of posters on here are finding ir helps them get control over their eating, even when there is an emotional trigger. It's not a magic wand, but it's a good start for many.

LurkyMcLurkinson · 10/06/2025 22:36

if you’re hoping to take eating away as a coping mechanism then you need to find alternative ones. Have you ever had any therapy or engaged with any self help work?

socks1107 · 10/06/2025 22:37

I was like this a year ago. January this year the switch in my brain just said no more and I’ve lost enough weight now to make a difference in looks, health and how I feel.
sometimes we need that trigger and switch and it took me a while to get there too

Refvs · 10/06/2025 22:40

Thank you everyone. Thank you for the book recommendation - I’ll download on my kindle tonight. I don’t think therapy works for me but I didn’t use it for weight loss I had for my childhood ptsd and I felt worse tbh. I’m really fed up. 10lb weight loss is amazing! How did I you do it @Gustavo1

Its calories not exercise. I've just lost 5 stone and I've been bedbound for a year waiting for surgery. I'm 63.
I stuck to 1000 calories a day and lost 2 pounds a week now I'm thin.
I'm an emotional eater too but haven't been able to get to the fridge I can only manage to get downstairs once a day to eat.
I've had my op and can get about ok now but it goes to show can't exercise is no excuse, you don't have to. Its better if you do because of muscle wastage but its not essential.

Refvs · 10/06/2025 22:42

@Gettingbysomehow that is amazing! Well done and I’m sorry you had to have an operation - hopefully you’re feeling better now

LurkyMcLurkinson · 10/06/2025 22:44

You don’t necessarily have to look at talking therapy or anything like that, you could explore therapy that helps you develop coping mechanisms, like cognitive behavioural therapy.

Wow that's fantastic!

GreenTurtles3 · 10/06/2025 22:50

Have you looked into SlimPod? There's a 10 day free trial on at the moment. It's weirdly working well for me!

Roxietrees · 10/06/2025 22:54

Take the weight loss jabs!

ButteredRadishes · 10/06/2025 22:55

Do the jabs.

TigerDroveAgain · 10/06/2025 22:56

What’s your objection to the jabs?

Ijustwanttobehealthy · 10/06/2025 22:58

I find exercise really helps me to make healthier food choices. Setting myself goals, either walking step goals, or 3 kettlebell routines per week etc. But really, calorie counting is the only thing that works for me. It takes a couple of weeks to get used to it, but if you stick with it, you could see steady 2lbs/week losses without taking risky jabs.

Ijustwanttobehealthy · 10/06/2025 22:59

Serious side effects probably.

ChineseAlan8910 · 10/06/2025 23:01

Get on the jabs! I have lost over 2 stone since 15th March. Don't moan as the solution is there for everyone.

What “Risky jabs”?

Comtesse · 10/06/2025 23:03

Have a look at Slimpod. Can be very effective for getting to grips with emotional/ motivational side of over eating. I think it could be really helpful OP.

ChineseAlan8910 · 10/06/2025 23:03

I wasn't even that overweight to start with (29 BMI) and now it's 25. Easiest thing I have ever done. Years wasted on diet and exercise.

Nothankyov · 10/06/2025 23:03

@Refvs Im going to go against the grain here and say that exercise and diet are equally important for losing weight. I spent a lot of time eating right and not losing weight. It depends on your metabolism and also on your age - I found as I hit my 40s it was harder to lose weight due to hormone fluctuations without exercise. For me excercise means that even if I have a day where I eat more (in out for dinner for example) I don’t gain any weight. I lost 20kg in 2 years and managed to keep it off and maintained for the last year. I would advise a combination of both.

with regards to therapy what I would say is not all therapists are born equal and I have found you do have to shop around! Not everyone will suit you.

another thing I would suggest is some yoga and meditation which can help regulate and exercising releases endorphins (I’m sure you know) which help reduce pain and boost mood and also help with stress.

edited to add: diet means (for me) 1200 calories a day to lose weight. To maintain I do about 1700 but I do not deprive myself of doing out and eating out with friends - I just make sure I exercise on those days!

What “Risky jabs”?

The weight loss jabs that people are talking about on this thread clearly. Some of the serious side effects of Mounjaro include:

  • hypoglycemia
  • allergic reactions
  • tachycardia
  • vision changes
  • pancreatitis
  • gallstones
  • kidney damage

Animal studies have shown the potential for Mounjaro to cause thyroid cancer.

All pharmaceutical medications carry risks, so not sure why you chose to be so obtuse about it.

Ha I just said the same thing! It’s actually 10 days free upfront then you can cancel before your first monthly payment is due so 40 days with no financial risk. Some people use it alongside injections, but it can be very effective at resetting your brain without relying on willpower alone.
