To think they should have kept serving me?

Went to collect 4 parcels from my local shop. I told her I had 4, she gave me 1 and said “thanks, bye” … I informed it again it was 4. It was taking ages and she claimed she couldn’t find it - but she’d already scanned my code and signed it in the book that it had been collected.

She said “yeah I can’t find it” and then the guy with her told me I would need to wait whilst they served the queue behind me.

Sorry I get there was a queue of 2 people but I was there first and was in the middle of being served and had already been patiently waiting. I don’t think I should have to wait even longer because they couldn’t find my parcel.

I'd have been annoyed if I was in the queue but annoyed about the fact that if there were 4 parcels for the same person they weren't all stored together as they should have been, and that the staff member seemed to sign off having only handed over 1.
That's poor customer service.

Also, if they need time to deal with multiple parcels then they should make this clear to customers.

You really think the shop should go trawling through the parcels in case there’s more than one for the same customer and stack them together? Do you think they have nothing better to do?

Are you having a laugh? 🤣

I wonder when the last time was when OP bought anything from them, or is she just drives to her local Tesco.

mumda · 10/06/2025 20:48

Having been to collect a parcel at a local shop I've vowed never to again.

The casual strewing of parcels around was unattractive and not secure.

Surely it makes sense to sort the parcels into a basic order - like alphabetical by name 🤷
Then they can indeed go straight to the 4 parcels.
If they aren't going to bother to sort the parcels they shouldn't offer the service.
I mean they have to sort the stock that is delivered on a daily basis like the newspaper and magazines delivery and rotating the dates on the milk etc.
Sorting the parcel delivery is part of their job.

Bahhhhhumbug · 10/06/2025 20:52

I don't understand your last post Op that there were 4 and 2 came this morning , had they not received the other 2 yet ?And why in the name of all that is holy why wont you tell us whether they found your other 3 .

I was assuming it was a shop that did this on a regular basis
Why wouldn't they store parcels in a logical and sensible way?

My local shops get way too many parcels and keep them all in a big bin. There is no way they would have the time or space to sort them alphabetically.

Plus a surprising number of people don’t show up to collect their parcels.

They should stop offering the service then.
If they can't cope with it.

Why should they? Most people are grateful to be able to have such a convenient pick up location. I always wait for the owner to serve customers buying goods. I need them to stay in business so I can collect my parcels there.

Well it sounds like the OPs shop can't manage the service they are offering.
It wasn't exactly convenient for the OP was it?
My local corner shop is where you have to go to top up gas and electric, pay bills, top up Oyster travel cards etc. I don't believe shops make much money out of that either. But the customers using that service are still customers.

If I was collecting 4 parcels, I would absolutely offer for the shop worker to serve customers buying things.

Other customers waiting for parcels should wait though.

So you'd be willing to stand there like a twiddling your thumbs for over an hour while they serve customer after customer?
(also.... you're actually a customer too)

It’s a small shop, each transaction probably takes a couple of minutes, I doubt these are full shops.

Yes, I would wait for my 4 parcels and let them make money.

MrsFrumble · 10/06/2025 16:18

@EllyRoff so you would have just left with only one parcel, abandoning the other three which you’d presumably paid for, lest you annoy the other customers by “faffing”? Bollocks you would 🤣

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/06/2025 21:12

Er, if the shop staff have marked off the order as 'collected' but in fact its only partially collected, then it's much more likely the remaining packages will go AWOL.

That, and the rudeness instead of just asking politely... is the problem.

Valkyrie3 · 10/06/2025 21:13

@EllyRoff - funniest post ever. Really made me laugh. 😆

Mooflon12 · 10/06/2025 21:14

I can't be bothered to check has she told us if they gave her the rest of the packages yet??

PassingStranger · 10/06/2025 21:15

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 10/06/2025 16:34

they can offer the service but still choose to prioritise other customers in the shop if they think it will earn them more money, and can’t find the parcel then and there. I’m assuming you still got the parcel yes? There are a lot of newsagents around so someone queuing for a £20 packet of cigs or some beers may well get fed up and go elsewhere. Meanwhile you have no choice but to wait for your parcel which they already got the money for.

I don’t understand why people don’t get this concept. It may be annoying but I can understand it.

People need to learn to be patient, go somewhere else lol. There might be a queue there too. Just bloody wait your turn.

Well if it's my local corner shop you went to you could be there for hours 😂
They have a constant flow of customers paying for a variety of actual goods but also paying bills, paying rent, buying lottery tickets, claiming lottery prizes, topping up their gas, asking to compare different bottles of booze that's kept behind the counter, buying cigarettes, buying phone cards, topping up travel cards.....it literally never seems to stop in there.
(They even open Christmas Day 😂)

Bitchesbelike · 10/06/2025 21:18

EllyRoff · 10/06/2025 17:54

Why won’t you say if you got your parcels? Stop faffing and answer the bloody question 🙄

I really do think “parcel people” should only be allowed to collect parcels at certain times of day when there are dedicated parcel staff on.

the newsagent shouldn’t offer a service that they aren’t prepared to actually carry out

tinytemper66 · 10/06/2025 21:24

Bloody hell. Have we found out if OP got all her parcels or did she just leave us hanging? Fuck! Just update! I can’t see it on here now.

Growuppeople · 10/06/2025 21:25

O my! The other people probaly just wanted a drink and a bag of crisps probaly less than a minute! You had to wait for them to look for the parcel anyway I don’t understand your problem!? I would’ve just said yes fine and waited I’m sorry but you’re just weird.

And mine ARE sent to my house, but if I’m not in they get dumped at some random corner shop.

This. Bloody UPS are the worst for this. Mine got sent to the next town over, one in one direction, two in another. (Not at the same time, I hasten to add.) DPD just dropped them off at the post office.

Rosscameasdoody · 10/06/2025 21:50

lifeonmars100 · 10/06/2025 18:52

  1. Pensions are paid directly into bank accounts just like all other payments made by the DWP
  2. A Direct Debit is exactly as it states, a "debit" i.e a payment taken from someone's bank account not made to it

BACS is the system used by DWP. And many pensioners still collect their pension from the post office if they don’t have, or can’t manage a bank account for themselves. It’s a voucher system called the payments exception service.

Ohnobackagain · 10/06/2025 21:51

@itsotoy that is crap. No way should they stop unless there is a need to go out back and no other staff in the shop which means the shop being unattended or something. I’d be annoyed too.
