To think they should have kept serving me?

Went to collect 4 parcels from my local shop. I told her I had 4, she gave me 1 and said “thanks, bye” … I informed it again it was 4. It was taking ages and she claimed she couldn’t find it - but she’d already scanned my code and signed it in the book that it had been collected.

She said “yeah I can’t find it” and then the guy with her told me I would need to wait whilst they served the queue behind me.

Sorry I get there was a queue of 2 people but I was there first and was in the middle of being served and had already been patiently waiting. I don’t think I should have to wait even longer because they couldn’t find my parcel.

O my! The other people probaly just wanted a drink and a bag of crisps probaly less than a minute! You had to wait for them to look for the parcel anyway I don’t understand your problem!? I would’ve just said yes fine and waited I’m sorry but you’re just weird.

But there were TWO staff. One could look for the parcel while the other served the customers. I really don't see what's so difficult.

nomas · 10/06/2025 20:58

Why should they? Most people are grateful to be able to have such a convenient pick up location. I always wait for the owner to serve customers buying goods. I need them to stay in business so I can collect my parcels there.

You seem oblivious to the fact that you’re a paying customer too. You’re paying for the service they choose to offer. If they don’t employ enough staff not to keep you waiting while they serve others who are after you in the queue, then they shouldn’t be offering the service. This is the reason British people put up with shit service not tolerated anywhere else.

nomas · 10/06/2025 20:45

You really think the shop should go trawling through the parcels in case there’s more than one for the same customer and stack them together? Do you think they have nothing better to do?

Are you having a laugh? 🤣

I wonder when the last time was when OP bought anything from them, or is she just drives to her local Tesco.

Edited

They are paid to provide the service. If OP had been notified that four parcels were awaiting collection, then do you really think it’s too much to ask for the four parcels to be available when she turned up ? So yes, l would expect them to have them all together and easily located - that’s what they’re being paid to do.

Baggingarea · 10/06/2025 22:15

I think sometimes OP you gotta choose your battles and let this one go. Im guessing they eventually found the parcel? Dont give this headspace.

I assume it’s a very small local shop with one or two staff. Personally I always say to customers who are there just to purchase items to go first if there’s only one person on the till as I know it could take a while to find my parcels in the store cupboard or wherever and it’ll take two seconds to scan their pint of milk.

There was no queue behind me when she started serving me. Maybe I should have checked the amount of people on the street outside to try and predict who might come in and immediately tell them to go in front of me.

But did you get all 4 parcels 😁

Daphnise · 10/06/2025 22:36

If I were waiting in the queue I would be glad you were made to wait.
Next time collect one at a time, or only go when the place has no queue, and you don't create a queue with your demands.
If the staff are so inefficient, don't use the place as a pick up.

Do we not know yet? Ffs.

I'm assuming that the OP did and just wants to vent.

@itsotoy please put us out of our misery and tell us you did get all 4 !!!

Sometimes it’s the company who says they’re delivering there. Why shouldn’t she pick up 4 at once. The shop should be able to manage that , if they can’t they shouldn’t be a delivery hub or they should get more staff and be more efficient.
Would it kill people to queue ?

cinnamongirl123 · 10/06/2025 22:53

This thread is unreal. OP do you find all normal interactions in life very stressful?

But this wasn't normal.
She was being served but then they decided to not finish serving her.
They confirmed on paperwork she had received 4 parcels. She hadn't. They gave her 1.
They had not finished the transaction.
You think that's a normal way to be treated in a shop?

Oh of course she did, she just wants to share the outrage that she was made to wait for them to serve a couple of actual
paying customers before she got her four parcels.

The nerve of those minimum wage shop workers who couldn't IMMEDIATELY find her multiple parcels and thought it better to serve customers in a queue and then return to her….How dare they!

mmsnet · 10/06/2025 23:16

hope you never get your parcels

what a ridiculous post

So yes, I do know I’m a paying customer, but I also know they get pennies from my custom so I’m not going to force them to serve me first and look for 4 parcels.

nomas · 10/06/2025 23:42

The 4 parcels may be from 4 different companies / delivery services.

They’re getting pennies per parcel, they’re not going to sit there matching names on all the parcels and stacking them on shelves in alphabetical order.

You want DHL service, pay for DHL service.

Needmorelego · 10/06/2025 23:45

@nomas but seriously - how long would you be happy to stand there and wait?
What if it's a constant flow of customers that keep coming and coming.
I really can't believe that you'd be happy to be halfway through your transaction and then told "sorry but we are going to stop serving you and make you stand here for an hour".
What if those in the queue were also there for parcels? Or stuff that I imagine the shop makes little money on (topping up their gas card or whatever)?
The OP was halfway through her transaction. The staff should have finished serving her.
She's just as important as everyone else in that shop.

Yes? Your point? We are talking about the person serving. We still don’t even know if they got all 4 parcels in the end, don’t think we will find out what the other staff member was actually doing 🤦🏻‍♀️

I already said that if it was someone else waiting for a parcel, then I would expect to be served first.

Again, it’s unlikely to be an hour. It’s a small shop, not a supermarket, and unlikely to be a constant flow of customers.

And yes, if they gave me one of my parcels, and wanted to serve someone buying something behind me, I would be totally fine with that.

Needmorelego · 10/06/2025 23:56

@nomas as I said upthread my local corner shop - which offers all sorts of services - does have a constant flow of customers. It's never quiet in there 😂
I said at the beginning of the thread they often serve more than one person at a time. Often literally over my head as I am only 5ft. I hate that. They often say "next please" before you've even paid.
I'm always thinking "ffs just do one at a time".

Yeah, that’s not very nice of them. I’m not very tall so that would annoy me.

I guess I’m going by local shop, which can get busy but you never wait more than a few minutes to be served even at busy times.

The staff seem to judge it quite well, getting my parcel for me between customers buying things.

swimlyn · 11/06/2025 00:25

BallerinaRadio · 10/06/2025 17:00

If I'm in that queue behind you I am 100% getting annoyed at the situation.

The right thing to do would be to say to you I can't find the other three, I'll just serve these other customers and then continue looking for your parcels as not to inconvenience everybody in the shop. Perfectly acceptable.

Bollocks it is!

TENSsion · 11/06/2025 06:25

People who are saying they’d be happy for their service to be suspended indefinitely are talking 💩
